Man Dies following Franconia Crash
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/news-releases/2011/022211mandiesfollowingcrash.htm

Franconia Police District - A 21-year-old man was pronounced dead Saturday, February 19 following a single vehicle crash that took place in the 5200 block of Franconia Road on Tuesday, February 15. Adrian Cardozo, 21 of 3506 Elmwood Drive was a passenger in the crash that occurred at 2:10 a.m. near the intersection of Guilford Drive.

Detectives have determined that the driver of a 2004 Suzuki Impreza was eastbound on Franconia Road traveling at a high rate of speed, failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a large utility pole. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the vehicle and transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital.

The driver was identified as Joseph Shuttleworth, 21 of 6254 Lewin Drive, Alexandria. He was charged with driving under the influence and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Additional charges are pending further investigation by Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives.

Ouch, that's gonna leave a mark

DUI with a death involved. Isn't that, like, homicide? Is DUI a felony? Then it would be homicide during commission of a felony?

How ironic that the clue phone rang for him exactly three years before his death. I guess he didn't pay attention.

Wow, great parenting by Mother Shuttleworth. Can someone find one of her mug shots? There should be a separate Shuttleworth volume at APD headquarters.

I thought that this was ironic as well:
The passenger gets a seatbelt ticket three years before his death, to the day.
The mother of the kid driving had a H&R two years and one day before the accident.

From all the stuff that is in taht database, this was almost predetermined that this kid would do something this stupid. Of course, he is still alive so we are all on the hook for his misgivings for the next 30 years.

Good God. And when I got a ticket for "failure to obey a highway sign" the judged slammed me and called me a danger to society. This was despite the fact I was the only one in court that day wearing a suit. People kept running up to me asking me to help them since I am lawyer. I am not. I am a danger to society. Failure to obey a highway sign - how dare me. I should have got jail time

No, that's definitely a receding hairline.

Both ejected?! How come no-one has commented yet that if these guys learned from their charges in the past, they both would have probably walked away without injury. Who the fuck doesn't wear a seatbelt now a days? Are they not cool or something? I wouldn't want to be accused of not being cool so I need to know. Can one of you youngsters let me know why one would not wear a seatbelt? Either it's because you are an idiot or it's not cool. If it's not cool, I need to know so I can stop wearing one.

I have known the driver since he was little, though to be honest have not seen him or his family in years. His mother the one who's record you posted passed away last Sept 2010, of what I do not know. Drinking and Driving is stupid I totally agree!!... I understand people are going to say vial nasty remarks on here, but let's not forget a life was lost. You do not know if the young man was wearing his seat belt or not, its possible he was, and the force of the impact caused him to eject regardless. My prayers and thoughts go out to The Cordozo Family. A life lost no matter the reason is still a life lost. I will say this you all who called the young man "WORMFOOD" are disgusting human beings with no regard to human life.

"stupid is ,as stupid does"

I had'nt a clue when I was a kid, these two were "adults?",people in general need to get it, alcohol is not harmless, just because it's been around for a long time and is legal, and seatbelts save lives.

#1 Punctuation and grammar
#2 Spelling
#3 Calling others "morons"

You have to learn 1 and 2 before you go about number 3.

Reading Angels post I just can't get past the worlds longest run-on sentence. Think of punctuation as a breather, when you finish a sentence, place some punctuation at the end and capitalize the beginning letter of a sentence.

"no" and not "know"
"passed", not "past"
"affecting" not "effecting"
"would have" not "would of"
"love you too" not "love you to"

If you want people to take you seriously, apply the rules of proper english to convey your feelings, it may be more formal but it is a great way to get your message across without coming across as some slack-jawed, emotionally-stunted, poorly-educated person. I know its cooler to write like a teenager, but if you want your message to have gravity, you need to have that reflected in your words and not through your meaning.

What you put out, you get back. Want to be taken seriously, act seriously.

This situation just sucks. I mean, that was his best friend. He'll never forgive himself. Probably could have happened to half of us on this website if we were just unlucky. Still though, he should have learned by his previous arrest. I knew a guy who was in the same position. His friend didn't die though and got a massive major brain injury and was never the same. The guy was destroyed as a person after that. Jail was 8 years I think. Ruined lives. Don't drink and drive and wear an f-ing seat belt.

I am very shocked and appalled by the terrible things people are writing about Joey, Adrian, and Mrs. Shuttleworth. None of you know them or have the right to judge them. Adrian was a great person with an amazing smile that always lit up the room. He always knew how to make people laugh even though the bad times that we had at Edison with the many deaths of fellow students. Adrian cared about his family and his friends, especially Joey who was his best friend. As written by someone before Adrian was always there for Joey no matter what. They were each other’s fan and the greatest duo I have ever had the pleasure to know. Joey is also a caring person who also cares about his family and friends. He is such a kind person full with love and laughter. He would not hurt a soul. Joey is his own person and you should not base judgment on him based on his looks or history or his mother’s history. What has happened is a tragedy and I think none of you people who sit at home on your computers instead of actually doing something with your lives, like changing this world to make it a better place. Who are you to judge and make accusations as if you were involved in the whole situation? How dare you all! How would you feel if people judged and blogged about you or your loved ones while you were going through a rough time? I bet you would feel crap! You can go ahead and act like you are perfect but all of us make mistakes. I ask that you respect Joey, Adrian, the Cardozo Family, and the Shuttleworth Family at this time. I love Adrian & Joey so much and I always will. They are my friends and will always have a special place in my heart. Although Adrian is gone, I know I have another angel along with my other Edison angels looking after my friends and myself.

FFXU is not the place to memorialize the deceased, especially in cases where the accident was the result of irresponsible and stupid decisions made by the victims.

Angel, when Joey's family first moved into that house and had Heather my family lived accross the street. My mother babysat Heather till my Aunt Shirley took over, then when Joey came along she watched him as well. Your Aunt Jennifer was a very special women. My mother I found out. Had a drug problem, I think Jennifer caught on, she would help me with homework if I needed it, have me over for dinner etc. I was shocked to find out she passed away, I was curious as to what happened to her. No family is perfect. Your family is in my thoughts. Drinking and Driving was a horrible decision on Joey"s part, it is something he will have to live with. My prayers are with The Cordozo Family as well.

That looks like a Subaru Impreza WRX and not a "Suzuki Impreza" as stated in the press release.

Man, and I felt guilty for getting pulled over on 66 last week by a trooper for an expired inspection sticker.

never understood why they named that car the WRX (wrecks)

There are so many arrogant arsholes on this site.

What else do you do with your time than make terrible comments about the deceased and their families.

Use your real names & I'll look up your FC ticket/ arrest records.

I'll save you the trouble. My record is clean.

The fact of the matter is that Cardozo would likely be alive if he had been wearing his seat belt and if Shuttleworth hadn't been drinking he certainly would have been alive. The not-so-ironic kick in the balls is that Cardozo had a prior history of not wearing his seat belt and Shuttleworth had a prior DWI.

Seriously??? A life was lost, what ever the reason it was lost. You all come on and do nothing but show how stupid and childish adults act. Yeah that is setting a great example for the youth of tomorrow!!! You keep saying that the deceased was not wearing a seat belt, you do not know that!!.. Depending on the impact and how hard they hit the pole, the seat belt would not have mattered. I do not totally believe in seat beltsß as it is sometimes they can do more harm then good depending on what type of accident. That aside I understand people are entitled to their opinion and that a lot of people come on to purposely be a ass hole. Have some respect for the deceased though.

The Charges were not dropped. He was charged with a DWI, as far as being charged with the death of his friend still pending, though I would bet my last dollar he will be charged with Involuntary manslaughter, though should be murder 2 he knew drinking and driving could lead to someone dying.

The Driver did not have a prior DWI, I am not disagreeing that he is not in the wrong!, but the only DWI charge is this one from the night or morning of the accident on Feb 14, 2011.

He more than likely wasn't wearing a seatbelt, but you are correct in that we really don't know. In either case, they were both being idiots.

Some facts about seat belts:
•80% of all death to children in a motor vehicle accident could be prevented by properly securing the safety harnesses and seatbelts. (James Madison University)
As many as 17,000 people could be saved every year by wearing a seatbelt. (James Madison University)
For survivors, average medical costs are 50% higher for those not wearing a seatbelt. (Car-Accidents.com)
Of the 32,598 passengers killed in 2002 as the result of an automobile crash, almost 60% were not wearing seatbelts. (Naval Safety Center)
Only 1% of passengers who were restrained were ejected from car seats during a car crash. Of those ejected (restrained and unrestrained), 73% were killed. (Naval Safety Center)

So it is possible he was in a seat belt, but given the end result of the condition of the car, I doubt it.

Joey is my cousin. His mother was my mom's sister. She passed away 5 months ago and now my cousin has lost his best friend. I'm well aware that they both made a lot of bad decisions but you don't know what they've been through. Years of domestic abuse and violence put her on a path she couldn't recover from. Now her 21 year old son and 24 year old daughter are without a mother. Add to that the pain of losing your best friend at your own hands and I have nothing but sympathy for Joey. He is a good kid with a kind and loving heart. He made a horrible mistake and he's going to pay for it the rest of his life. You are all free to sit in judgment as I'm sure none of you have ever done anything wrong. Just be aware that you don't know a thing about their lives.

Let me remind all of you that are spouting trash on this site. And I mean this as no disrespect for Adrian or his family; however, he made a decision that night also. He chose to get in the car with someone that he knew had been drinking AND had probably been drinking himself. He chose to not wear a seatbelt. Joey most certainly made some bad choices and should and will be punished. My prayers are many but specifically this..... That the Cardozo family can forgive Joey for his part and by doing so find some peace in this horrid situation and that the court system take Adrian's commenserate responsiblity into consideration as they decide Joey's fate. I also pray that all of you that are spouting off really take this situation to heart and learn from their mistakes. We hear don't drink and drive but choose not to get in a car with someone you know has been drinking. Young people you are not indestructible, bad things do happen. LEARN AND GROW FROM THIS.

Your Aunt was a very nice person. I had heard rumors over the years that her husband was not very pleasant to say the least. Just wondering why she never left? I heard she passed away I am so sorry, was she sick? Or was it a accident? Not trying to be nosy, just more curious she seemed in good health. Your right this is a horrible tragedy all the way around. Keep in mind people come this web site for the sole reason of being judgmental and rude and nasty. Ignore them they want people to respond if you do not, they will go away.

So if I get liquored up, go driving, and kill someone in a crash, I was just "unlucky?" Bullshit.

The only good thing about this story is that it's a vivid illustration of why you shouldn't drink and drive.

Shadow, you are probably right about Adrian not wearing his seat belt. I could sit here and rant and rave say nasty things back to the ones who are in my book, rude and nasty. Then again unfortunately that is what this web site is about. It is real easy for a lot of us to say "Joey is a jerk, he should not have been driving and driving" which no he should not have been. Jerk? , no he is not. He made a horrible decision that resulted in the death of his best friend. That guilt alone is going to consume him the rest of his life. BUT all of you who are judging , your liars if you say you have never had a drink or a beer had drove home!.. What is funny is you think because it was just "ONE" that makes it ok. WRONG!!.. "PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES".. Could this accident been prevented yes it could have. But that is the key word "ACCIDENT" .. Please anyone who is close to The Shuttleworth's could you please tells how Jennifer passed away? She was really a wonderdul person :)

Personally, I have never had a drink of alcohol and gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle. Ever. I've never believed it couldn't happen to me. Shit regularly happens to me. I have never been willing to risk killing anyone else or myself. Or possibly maiming someone permanently. Just for a little buzz from alcohol? No way. Too stupid.

Never, ever have a been behind the wheel after I have had even one drink. My parents taught me right. Never drink and drive. If you can't go without a drink and not drive you have a problem.

I think both these men have been behind the wheel and have way too much to drink. I think this is the first time they were "caught".

Lesson to all you losers and so called friends, do not drink and drive.

PS don't drink and drive. It can kill Y'all.

Actually, Unreal, he proved he was stupid when he got into the car with a drunk driver. And if he really wasn't wearing his seatbelt, he was, in effect, asking to be killed.

I'm sorry for your loss, but there is plenty of info shoved down the throats of our youth today that drinking and driving is stupid. And speeding just exacerbates the problems. There is no excuse for it.

Though I do agree that trashing the dead is callous, rude, and stupid as well. There is no purpose in it, but just as bullies will trash other kids, bullies on the internet will trash others when they can. It's easiest to ignore them. Pointing out that their comments bother you only encourages them.

Shadow, honestly and sincerely thank you for yiur advice :). Trust and Believe I agree you with you totally about the drinking and driving I really did not know either one. Yes I know Joey when he was really young, but have not seen him or his family since he was like 6!!.. As far as indulging the stupid, snide remarks on here I gave the same advice and do agree with ya BUT still say its wrong to trash a death victim

Is it not wrong to get into a car operated by an impaired driver and not wear your seatbelt? Or is it only because he died that he gets pardoned from making the wrong decision?

Maybe he should have thought about more than himself, like his friends and family, and worn his mother fucking seatbelt. How is he innocent of anything?

@RightorRong.... Cute gee it that suppose to rhyme with Bong??? Hmmm.. Anyway in answer to what you stated, " Where you in the car with Mr. Cordozo? " .. Just curious how you are so sure he did not have a seat belt on? IDK about other people but I have read about and seen stories on TV where people were in car accidents and they had a seat belt on and for whatever reason the seat belt broke at impact. In reading the article The RoseHill Patch post after the meeting with the police about this accident and other matters they stated that at the point of impact the car was close to Triple Digits as far as speed. So hell yes if the car was going that damn fast and hit that pole with such force it is possible seat belt or not he would have been thrown from the car!?!?!.. Besides it is not up to or I or who the hell ever to judge anyone that is up to God.

I love how people bring god into everything even if science can explain why this kid died.

Give me a break. They are both losers. One is dead and the other is going to rot in jail.

It has nothing to do with a bong. You're obviously pretty upset about this shit-for-brains' death and have a pretty low level of maturity to associate a bong to whatever may rhyme with it... But that's not the point.

Seatbelta benefits are well researched and proven. Do your own research and you'll see that. You "read about it or saw it on TV?". Whatever kid.. You gonna believe the 2-minute abs machine is going to work, just cause it's on tv? What credibility did TV earn by virtue of just being a TV? Or just keep your head in the dirt (like your wormfood friend) and leave it up to chance and "god" because it's more comforting and you don't feel so upset at your fertilizing-friend. Seatbelts save lives. 100+ drunk miles per hour on a heavily salted bend of road and nothing to hold you down, will kill. Or wait, maybe it's "chance" or "god" that did it... Yep, that's makes your retarded jailmeat friend and his dead pal a lot less guilty and to blame. Victims even?

Let me suggest that when you drive drunk and kill someone, you aren't nominated for sainthood. He could have hit a mini-van full of kids. That fact that by luck he didn't doesn't mean he's a friggin' martyr.

@RightorRong.. Sweetheart I am 40 years old, I am not a kid. I was not friends with either person. Put the Bong done long enough to see well enough thru your rose colored glasses, what I said was that I knew the driver and his family when he was a toddler. I have not seen them in years , so I would not say we were friends. I did not know the deceased either. Get off your self righteous petal stool long enough to see the reason I said the remark about the "Bong" was because Mr. I am so smart and way more mature you spelled WRONG without the W. Gee bet you made straight A's in spelling!! .. Look I do not disagree that drinking and driving is stupid and wrong, all I said and still say is that calling someone who died "WORMFOOD and A STUPID IDIOT" is disrespectful and really just childish as hell. I never said it was bright to get in the car. But this much I know None of Us were there, there could be various reason's way Adrian got into that car that night. Someone said they were best friends like brother's IDK maybe he got in to try and stop Joey from driving. Look I know I will get made fun of for saying this and called every name in the book well maybe not because some of names you all call people are really horrible names BUT that aside I have a teenager 14, I suppose I want to believe there is still some good on this fucked up world! I know I can not shelter her from life per say. Believe me she knows Right from "W"rong, I know that is all I can do as a parent is trust that I did my part. The rest is up to her as she grows up. I realize this is not " Somewhere Over The Rainbow" or "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" hell some days I feel like this area more like "Boyz in the Hood".. In the grand scheme of things I know you all the right he got in the car with a drunk driver he knew what could happen, and the worst possible thing did happen. He lost your life when it was just beginning, and yes another person is headed to jail when his life is just beginning BUT he deserves too. IDK how many of you have kids that wrote your opinions on here. But don't you want them to treat people with respect?

Sorry I was going to read your post but you started it off with the classically sarcastic "sweetheart" salutation. The only people who call me sweetheart are those that I'm balls deep in. So unless your going to show me some 40 yr old tits, I just don't care one iota about whatever spews from your mouth hole. He is wormfood. He is also stupid. Both are indisputable as facts. If you want to talk about disrespect, sweetheart, I suggest you don't carry any for drunk driving murderers.

Now how deep is your vagina, btw?

And to the other 80 + Morons I spelled STOOL that way on person ... He is a piece of shit. I dunno measure your girlfriend's vagina that should tell ya about mine.. She must be one ugly bitch with no self esteem to be with someone like you.

yep you got me!!! That's what I said ... Look we can go back and forth all day and night.. But does not change the fact of what this forum was really about. Everyone has a opinion, I do agree what happened was stupid and totally could have been prevented. Yes he does deserve to go to jail. I just honestly do not see how you think you and everyone else on here that has wrote the nasty remarks about the deceased, makes you better then the driver or the deceased!! Do you have kids? @RightorWrong... What if had been your child who died that night. Would you still feel it was ok for people to call him WORMFOOD?? Just curious... Call me a sap or bleeding heart ... NO I don't have empathy or sympathy for the driver, BUT I do for the passenger and his family. In reality does not matter what I write or say on here, someone will always find something to bitch about or to make fun of or goad someone like me into a pissing contest of words. Honestly not my style.. But I got pissed and allowed myself to be lowered to your standards. So like every topic before this one .. It will fade out and then the next big thing comes along then it starts ALL over again (yawn)

Thank you... I got so mad I was not paying attention to what I wrote.. I meant to say I wrote that on purpose as to mean he is a piece of shit.. Hence the STOOL! Remark .. But all I did was act the way I have bitching about everyone else has been doing. I acted childish and Vengeful.. @iDrunkenMaster- everyone is entitled to a opinion ( 1st amendment). I did not say it was smart of the passenger to get into the car. Everyone is always so quick to find the bad in everyone, that we never stop to think about other facts. This probably did not happen but, all I was saying is we were not there that night, for all we know maybe Mr. Cordozo got into the car to stop his friend from driving. Yes! I have empathy and sympathy for the deceased family. It was not their fault someone killed their son. Your right Thank God nobody else was hurt or killed. But why is it that if it had been a Soccer Mom as you said that her life was so much more valuable then the passenger's a life is a life ..I will ask you the same question "Do you have Kids?" .. If you do would you think that because your kid was in the car and had died that they deserved it?? Or would you think it was ok for another human being to call them WORMFOOD.. You all preach on here about how this accident should be a example to kids not to drink and drive .. I DO AGREE! But should we not also set a example for our kids that even though they have a opinion it should be spoke respectfully??

Life long friend of BOTH of these guys, no matter what you say you will not fully understand what this guy is going through until you experience it for yourself. God forbid this happens to your child and his/her best friend. You are all a heartless bunch of saps with nothing better to do with your lives. Yes, I lost a friend. Yes it hurts really bad. Yes this SHOULDNT have happened. Yes this is a major TRAGEDY to all those involved, especially the ones who survived. God forbid this happens to your children so that you learn the pain of losing somebody like this.

Actually, it's a predictable result of bad judgment. It would have been a tragedy if these guys had been hit by a drunk driver instead of being a drunk driver.

And there's the rub. Because none of us here (that I know of) has gotten drunk, driven like a bat out of hell without a seat belt on and killed a friend.

You know, I would probably feel pretty bad if I got drunk and beat the shit out of my wife and put her in a hospital. But I haven't and won't, so that doesn't mean I should have any sympathy for someone who does.

Ths difference between Empathy and Sympathy is that you can sympathize if you have done the same act (driven drunk without your seatbelt on and crashed, killing your friend). Empathy is when you haven't done the same thing, but still feel bad for them and their situation.

The friends feel empathy, but surely not sympathy. Only a few souls could feel sympathy for this guy right now and they are probably locked up without internet access.

BTW, I feel no empathy for this guy. He did what he did and he will now suffer the consequences - all actions have consequences and most 18 to 21-year-olds do not have the brain function to realize the long-term consequences of their actions fully.

If you drive at a high rate of speed, while drunk, without a seatbelt, you are now in the area of tempting death. Its a miracle that he didn't take anyone else out on this race to the death and I am glad that did not happen, for truly innocent people could have been killed. These two knew what they were doing and are guilty of having made very poor choices with resulting actions and the preceeding consequences.

The friends of these two are acting typical in regard to the attacks that they feel have been hurled against their friends. Hopefully they will realize the lesson to be learned from this about drinking and driving. If not, THEIR friends will no doubt be defending their lives on an anonymous electronic posting in the future and have to explain their actions. Hopefully not.

In the end, it is what it is.
