For the older people on FFXU. What bars did you hang out in DC?

I use to go to the Bayou.

I used to frequent that bar which was owned by Joe Theisman, when he was popular back in the 80s. I remember He was on early morning radio opposite Howard Stern.

Hawk & Dove on Capitol Hill. Sometimes Duddingtons. I once watched
"Baseball Bill" win the Washington Drink-a-Thon by downing 52
bottles of Budweiser and then challenging anyone to start over.
What a guy!

Max's on Broadway (Baltimore and the 90s)
Post Pub

The Roxy
Dixie Grill (ok 90s again)
Hard Rock Cafe when it was hip (early 90s)
Adams Morgan - but the names kept changing.
Let me think of more.

Yup, thats it. One half the morning show Elliot and Woodside, Scott Woodside, who was aftra/sag, was an extra in the bar scenes. He placed a WPGC or Q107 bumper sticker near the phone boot and it got into a couple shots.

And who could forget Cagneys at #1 Dupont Circle. The place was wall to wall hot women dancing.

Rabbits Foot, went to school with the bartender. Always a line, called before and was let in the service door. Got a lot of free drinks too. Needless to say my friend was tipped well.

Also Mr. Henry's Tenley Circle, Dancing Crab, Godfather. Zebra Room for pizza.

We used to run with some crazy chick's at Mt Vernon College. They liked to go to Winstons. One of them lived across the street from Clancy's and Good Guy's. If she was running late I left her a note which titty bar I was at and she came and got me.

And it was called Pierce Street Annex. I saw Rick Springfield there. How 80s is that?

In the early 70s, one of our gang discovered a place near Dupont Circle called "Food for Thought". They had *dark Schlitz* by the pitcher and they did not card! We went there quite a few times.

Then, we found a strip joint around the corner called Fireplace, also did not card. I'm sure the women were skanks but, to a 16-year old, any nude woman was incredible. One time, the waitress in there asked for our IDs. We all said we forgot them. She said "Look, the manager's watching me, just gimme your library cards or something". So each of us whipped out some sort of card, which she studied while nodding, then proceeded to get us our pitchers.

Another place around there was Childe Harold. We'd go down there and see Emmy Lou Harris, Billy Hancock (rockabilly) and the late, great Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band.

Ahh, good times!

It had been going down hill for the past few years. Terrible service, not keeping beer in stock, etc. It's totally stupid to have 500 beers listed on your menu if you don't even keep half of them in stock. Last time I as there, I had to order 3 different times before they had what I wanted.

It's actually still there, just under different owners and a new name. Hopefully they'll clean up their act.

Back in the 80's, when the drinking age in MD was 21 and 18 for beer and wine in Georgetown, my friends and I went there often
Coming home at 3:00 am, half drunk and tired, it is a wonder we are still alive!
We parked in Georgetown Park
Went to Houlihan's, Chadwick's or Clyde's for dinner
Or Frankly Fries for the $1.00 beers and fries
Went to The Library, Fish Market, Winston's and sometimes Annie's but not very often
I remember a bar called Abbey Road that had an old fire engine in it but I don't remember where it was
My friends pushed me into the Pleasure Chest once....

That was the only place I've ever seen bikers and preppies congregating in the same bar without preppy blood flowing like water. Of course, being DC, the bikers were pretty far from real 1%'ers.

Louies Rock City at the Fairfax Arlington line South Jefferson St.
Some real great music , huge place. I will always remember one night seeing a Marine climb up one of the interior support beams and kick and fight off five or six bouncers who tried to get him down.

Going way back The Lobster Shed in Old Town Alexandria which is now an Irish bar. Live bands way before Old Town started to suck.

Added attraction was this was when when the age for beer/wine was 18.

The bars I can remember going in the late 70s and early 80s were Bojangles, Abbey Road, Tammany Hall, Rumours, Black Rooster Pub, Deja Vu, The Exchange, Mike Baker's and Desperado's. Desperado's was the only one of the bunch I've listed that I can remember having live music. All the rest had DJs.

There was a dive bar, really cheap on M west of Wisconsin...I remember many shots of Kamikazes there. Does anyone remember the name? It was on the north side of the street.

I get a hangover just thinking of that place. The happy hour beers were like a buck and had to be 40 ounce size. It was like drinking out of a pitcher. That was the one in Alexandria on South Van Dorn St.

That was way before the cops took a hardass view of DUIs

I hated Poseurs because I LOVED Old Mac's Pipe and Drum which preceded it; it wasn't pretentious at all and had the best jukebox in town. I really loved the DC area back in those times.

The best bars were on 13th and 14th streets around I and H NW. One club(I forget the name) had 3 levels of strippers and a whorehouse on top. Marion Barry did his lines there. There was the old burlesque club, Silver Slipper where Irwin Corey performed and Fannie Foxe stripped. Casino Royale was a huge disco.

Funny, that explained why my Dad often stayed late 'at work' or just got 'a couple drinks' with his co-workers after work. He worked at 14th and I for some time.

There was a bar in Georgetown called The Library. You had to go downstairs and there were bookshelves with books on them all around. I used to go to that place almost everynight! Loved it! It was a few doors down from Winstons and Paul Mall..(?) and maybe Crazy Horse (?) Jeez so long, I dont rmemeber exactly, but it was down from a place that had live music.

GREAT Thread! Found it while doing a google search... Have little idea if any of these remain as lived in the Midwest for past 25 years.

The Hill:
The Tune In
Hawk 'n' Dove
Jenkin's Hill

G-Town:
All that have been mentioned. What was the place basically on the corner of Wisconsin and M, just a few doors west of WI? Every time I hear Dexy's Midnight Runners I think of it...
The Good Guys up WI Ave (only heard about it... sort of)
What was the sports bar in the Alley off of WI and M where a lot of the 'skins hung out after home games?

Downtown (18th & M):
Most been mentioned already (Rumors, Pierce St., Sign of the Whale, etc.)

Dupont Circle:
I'm from the Midwest;it was too far "out there" for me, but one place which played great tunes by a DJ and great dance floor!

Olde Towne:
Watched the '84 Summer Olympics at Chadwicks
Bullfeathers sister station
Misc Irish Bars that I can't think of...

Keep this going folks, this is bringing back a lot of great memories...

Ahh, DC in the 1980s. Drinking age was 21 in MD & VA, but good old DC held it at 18 until like 1986 or 87. Not that it really made much difference. Don't remember any bars really carding.

4 P's near uptown theater
Fish Market
Zoo Bar
Saloon
3rd Edition
Hawk & Dove
Sign of the Whale
Camelot (if that counts)
Clydes
Mr Smiths
Houston's
Tiber Creek (gotta love the yards of beer)

Also used to be some dive on M-street near Wisc that had a small restuarant upstairs and jazz club downstairs. Can't remember the name, but 36oz beers for $1.95, no ID required.

Not to mention the many liquor stores that would gladly sell you beer if you could reach the counter height.

Forgot to mention Brickskeller (sp). Had the best beer selection in town and some decent mixed drinks. Never forget the one called "Orbit & Go Naked". Non-alcoholic beer, grain alcohol & some type of mixer. Instant memory blanker.

The Greenery (18th btw L and M)
Mr. Day's
PJ's Saloon (peanuts on the floor, male dancers)
Paradise Cafe (now Rumors)
Apple Tree
Tracks (great dance music back in the day)
Harvey's
Samantha's
Knickbocker's (Hill)

Rascals, on Conn. just north of Dupont Circle. Hot sweaty nude male dancers and a veritable who's who of DC movers and shakers.

DC Eagle, the leather scene. More chill, but a lot of rooms for short term rent on the upstairs level. Near the Convention Center.

There was a place I remember accidently walking into, you climbed a flight of stairs and there was this attendant behind an iron gated booth on the first landing, I asked him what kind of club it was and he said it was a Gay establishment, I think it was one of the first. The early 80s. On a main DC artery.

Jerry Studds and Barney Frank would sure as hell know the place. Wilbur Mills used to hang out at a Strip Joint downtown DC. He was banging Fanny Fox, the Argentine Firecracker.

Tammany Hall = Drinking all night ending with Roasalita and peppermint schnapps at 4:00am
I started going there when I was 16 in 1975. Never carded until the very day of my 18th birthday. The doorman and bar staff bought me drinks all night. Beat the clock. Freshman girls from GW University. Happy days
The rest of the time in Georgetown at the Wax Museum, Bayou, Desperado's, Cellar Door, Blues Alley and so many of the other bars mentioned above.
Am glad I was there.

The place near G'town University, that you had to go down stairs to get to, is the Tombs---still there.

In arlington there was the Pawn Shop, Whitey's and the Quarterdeck.

In georgetown there was Desparadoes, Winstons, Pall Mall, Crazy Horse, Champ's Third Edition, etc

Near 19th and M was Rumors, Pierce Street Annex, Sign of the Whale, Luigi's, Mr Days, the rally in the alley was at a place called PJ Oreilly's, Black Rooster, Gusti's, Cousteau's, Bronco Billy's, Flap Rickenbackers, etc.

Upper Georgetown there was Act IV (next to good guys---$4 all you could drink on Sunday), Admiral Benbow across the street

Tenley Circle had Circus Maximus (Tuesdays was nickel beer and all you could eat hot dogs.

Then there was the Poor House Pub, by the Outer Circle theater (all the peanuts you could eat before Five Guys)

Over by GWU there was Tammany Hall, the 21st Amendment, the Chinese Disco (chinese restaurant that turned into a disco at night), the GW Campus Club ($2 all you could drink on Sunday night)

Holy Crap...I spent a lot of time in bars!

GG Flips in the mid 80's, on 20th street or so near K.

Georgetown Pub, on the campus, in the basement of one of the buildings.

Abbey Road, and another below ground bar nearby.

The old nudie bars: This is it, Casino Royale, 1720 Club, which was near Mike Bakers.

Now that is just downright freakin silly. There's no chance that is was named "Is This It?"

And don't try to establish credibility by suggesting that you are JC. I doubt he would have gone there anyway, and so how would he have known what it was called? When I see those wristbands that say "WWJD", the last thing that comes to mind is hang out at "This Is It."

There was -
"This Is It" , "Benny's Rebel Room" , "The Butterfly" . ( all topless )

My personal favorites were a short list -

"The Silver Slipper" for burlesque / strippers ( Fannie Foxe and Wilbur Mills fame ) ... I remember the manager , Mr.August.

Professor Irwin Corey was at the Slipper a few times.

And - "Rand's" .... "Phil Flowers & The Flower Shop" appeared here.
