I thoroughly enjoyed reading this even though I was born in 1985 so therefore could not partake in the festivities. My problem is that reading these old stories is the only enjoyment I can really have anymore due to the times and changes. The new generations suck balls! Want to bar hop in DC? Hopefully the worst you'll get is a DUI because the other possibilities are worse, i.e; robbed/beat up/killed for your wallet/smartphone/shoes by some nigs "pickin out they next white target" or having something pop up on your dick the next day that you can't get off with Ajax and a wire brush from the super infested dc area slores.

Not to mention the fact that you can't find good music in bars anymore, or even a good bar anymore. I can't find a Rock n Roll joint, a biker bar or one God damned honky tonk anywhere. I want to experience a hard fighting, harder partying bar where you don't know if you're going out the front door with a bad ass lady or out the back door over the shoulder of some scarred up bouncer for going toe to toe with some bad ass who wanted to test you to see if you had the grit to be in a place like that. Oh well I guess tossing cold ones back in my shed while cranking my own tunes will have to do until they invent a fucking time machine. Fucking millennial new Era bullshit. Give me another Hillbilly Heaven, Jim's country club, or Hunters Lodge I heard was a honky tonk. Hell they've even gotten rid of all the good places in Fredericksburg. That same wave that washed all the rednecks out of Nova is heading south. Times they are a changing!

I hung out in DC/Georgetown clubs 70 to 73 and remember most clubs mentioned. I worked at the Crazy Horse about 72,73. I was there so often I figured I should work there! I Remember many good bands including ‘Button.” Big guitar fan and really admired Danny Gatton who played downstairs, under the CH for a short time. He played country/steel guitar there. Speaking of good bands, no one mentioned the Keg up on Wisconsin avenue where I heard the best R&R and the best guitar, including Cherry People, who I assisted with business loan early 80’s? Followed Gatton all over the metro area and sat right in front of him in a small Fairfax club, which is now known as Shebeens restaurant. I met him between sets and talked to him a little. I also met Muddy Waters and talked to him between sets when he played at the Cellar Door. BTW those that saw Gatton at the Cellar door Christmas 78 I believe that was the performance that was recorded for album, check it out. Loved the bayou, saw Nighthawks there for years. Many other great groups played there including Johnny Winter. I loved Winstons because they had music trivia nightly and one night I answered several questions in a row and they cut me off. I won several shooters and had to give some of them away. I remember the fire engine, thanks for telling me the club, I had forgot. Saw Roy Buchanan at My Mothers Place. Bayou and Butterfly great places to dance and then later about 75,76 Pierce Street Annex

Tammany Hall was the first bar I ever walked into alone. I was 17. I danced many a dance on the tables there. Rosalita always ended the night. There was a bartender named Leven that worked there.

Winston's

The Atlantis, the address was 930 F Street, it was a dark, punk scene.

The Plum

The Spaghetti Mill in Annandale, I think.

A dive. Slim pickings in the 80s. Gone by the 90s. No point crying over it. Make something with what you got. A life to remember.

Old Mac's, 34@M, home of the last sixty-five cent drafts in Clowntown. It had a globe light fixture outside that read "BAR". When the Commander finally sold the place, it had various names and it was not a good place to go, any more. It was "Poseur's" for a while, which was a hangout for the fans of what became the "faux-alternative" WHFS after the Einsteins sold it yet again.

The Tombs was a much better place when Macooey owned it. They had a reputation for serving underage. Since Clyde's bought it years back, it has not been the same.

Mr. Eagan's, one of the last of the DuPont dives. Turned into just another fern bar.

Childe Harold-Great when the upstairs had shows. Still OK after the downstairs was all that was left.

Millie and Al's-probably the last of DC's neighbourhood dives.

Hotel Intrigue bar-one of the few decent hotel bars. While it was trendy for the Kennedy Centre crowd, those of us who lived in Foggy Bottom and were regulars did not have to stand when a show broke.

Tabard Inn Dining Room-At night used to have some good jazz players.

Cellar Door-Root Boy, Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan--WHAT can you say? Even George Carlin used to play the Cellar Door.

Clancy's Clowntown-The trashiest titty bar in the highest rent district. There was one in Anacostia, too, but the G-town location was the trashiest. There were always several acceptable dancers per shift but ALWAYS one ugly one. I knew a cab driver who lived in Vee-YAYY who married one of the ugly ones.

Pour House-Had a guitar player from Baltimore named Karen Goldberg Sunday nights who was pretty good. Reasonable drink prices and free peanuts--ya' threw the shells on the floor.

Mr. P's before it became Mithter P'th-Not a bad neighbourhood bar before the Taxi Zum Klo crowd took it over.

Guncher's-Brunch, or GRUNGE as we used to call it, was not bad. It was a real clip joint at night, though. It and J&B's Crazy Horse had a contest going to see which one could be the worst clip joint. Those two were the only places to which I went, ever, where you were expected to tip the hatcheck girl both in and out. I lived in New York, home to many a clip joint and even there, never did I see a place where you were supposed to tip the hat check girl when you handed it in and took it back. Needless to state, I went to either at night rarely.

Blues Alley was much better when John Bunyan owned it.

I MUST give a shout-out to one Maryland club, Showboat/Villa Rose in Silver Spring. Great jazz room, even if the drinks were a bit expensive.

Crazy Horse was a horrible clip joint. The hat check girl had her hand out both when you handed in your hat and when you took it back from her. Everywhere else that I have been, you tipped when you retrieved it. You could not finish turning around from the hatcheck girl when six bartenders are holding out glasses and beer bottles in your face and shouting at you above the blasting music. Every time that you turned around some asshole employee had his hand out for something. I avoided that clip joint.

I knew only one dancer at Casino Royal but knew half of them at Benny's. Do not forget This is It. The D.C. Government set up that joint then yanked their liquor licence as part of the effort to chase the titty bars and porno stores off Fourteenth Street. This Is It tried to survive as a juice bar, but that did not work well. When it would not shut down, the D.C. Health Department went in there and shut it down. This Is It was the last holdout.

In the early 1980s, I dated an older lady (40) who loved the Pawn Shop. All of my Asian and African friends also like it, for some reason.

I heard about Hillbilly Heaven, but can not say that I ever went there. There was another hillbilly joint in Arlington on Glebe Road just above U.S. 50 on the east side of Glebe Road. I forget its name, now. That was back when the Birchmere was in a shopping centre on South Walter Reed next door to a pool hall.

I do not remember 1320.

The PG firehall was for bingo?

Pierce Street Annex was an overpriced yuppie meat market full of sham and fake people. I went there once. That was enough.

The Crazy Horse was the place to meet foreign women working in the area back in the day(@1966). The regular band had a lead singer who could do Elvis second only to the King himself. The late 70s Pawn Shop was great for its low key atmosphere and loads of attractive, professional women virtually all of normal weight sans tattoos who worked for nearby companies like IBM and Xerox.

Hillbilly Heaven on Rt. 1 was about the roughest place around. Its patrons were mostly Appalachian men who worked the construction trades and partied as hard as they worked. It's the only place I ever met a card carrying member of the KKK. The Oxen Hill fire hall in PG rocked on Saturday nights. It was a BYOB place with decent bands and hot women from nearby apartment complexes. Both places could get out of hand around closing time with some fistfights erupting in the parking lot thet even scared the cops.

Around that time, there was a dive bar in Culmore (Misty's?)where something could
always be found to get you through the night. One of the most memorable BJs I ever received was had in the parking lot.

In 1966 I was living in California and was stealing a can of beer here and there from my parents when I thought that I could get away with it. By the time that I got here, Crazy Horse had become a clip joint.

I do not remember the Oxon Hill fire house. If they tried that now, the fistfights would seem tame. People would get shot.

Oh, you get a "haircut" allright at the clip joints. A clip joint is a place that rips you off worse than usual. Almost all places in Georgetown are and were rip-offs, but some were, and are, worse than others.

If you go into a clip joint, often you encounter:

1. A cover charge even if there is no live entertainment.
2. The compel you to check your coat and hat even if you prefer to keep them.
3. If you order a beer and ask for a glass, there is an extra charge.
4. The price of the beer is jacked up higher than usual.
5. The bartender does not give you the opportunity to ask for a Crudweiser, he just hands you the Heiney-kinn and charges you the super jacked up price for it.
6. Back when you could smoke in a bar, the clip joint charged for matches.
7. A charge for ash trays.

.........hopefully, you get the idea.

For a Mexican joint in Washington La Fonda was not bad. It had an upstairs that was European Spanish, El Bodegon. It was allright, as well, but La Fonda was much better. I lived on Seventeenth Street in the era of La Fonda, Trio's Pizza and Berose Liquors (Mark, the owner's son had all of that different beer in there).

George sold the pizza joint to some guy who couldn't make a go of it, which surprised me. George kept the Trio sit down joint and Fox and Hounds, but sold the pizza joint. It was in a good spot, was open late, had an OK reputation and a large clientele and the same employees who knew what they were doing. It will remain one of the minor mysteries of Seventeenth Street why the new owner could not make it.

Mr. Weiner decided to retire and sold Berose to some Koreans who turned it back into a half pint store, which was what it was before Mr. Weiner bought it. I wonder how a half pint store survives in that neighborhood today, but it does. Most of the drunken Mexicans, negro bums and assorted other drunks got priced out of there a long time ago.

Whatever is in that La Fonda/El Bodegon space now looks like another Rump Ranger joint, like Seventeenth Street needs another one of those.

I used to go to the Keg with Layme Jamie, Amyl John & Dead Rich.

I made a regular habit of throwing up on the bar.

Given my playmates and our activities, I consider myself lucky to be alice and lucky to be productive.

I was a patron of the Paul Mall for years. It was a disco place in those days. Many happy nights and met plenty of women. The redskins use to hang there and it was no big deal The manager Pip Thomas use to hold the "orphans Thanksgiving" every year for those of us that moved to DC from other places. It was the event of the year and you knew you were part of the "in crowd" if you go invited. Pip Thomas is own of Kilroy's off Braddock rd.

I used to work at Clancys Beef Palace as a "cook" when I was 17! The place was once a happening place. They had another one on Good Hope Rd. I was reminded of this this morning as a co-worker has to go to a Popeyes on Good Hope rd which made me think of it. Clancys was owned by Ernie Byrd an old school DC "gangster"? Rumored.. His girlfriend a large breasted nasty ass blonde worked there too. When I was there the few girls that danced were not that skanky. Rose, the manager was a bit sleazy...... Ernies son in law (I think) was sadly a fall down drunk. The bouncer reminded me of Curly from the 3 Stooges but was a complete badass! Glad he liked me! I even blew a joint with a DC cop, in uniform in the back parking lot at lunch time once! Good times for a 17 year old!

I remember going there, too. They actually had draft beer and it had the cheapest beer of all the titty bars. When I was going there, there were a couple of OK looking chix on a shift but there was always 1 skeezer. In fact, I knew a cab driver who married 1 of the skeezers. He's dead, now, but the last I heard, she was still alive.

I always thought Rose was more a whackjob than sleazy, but maybe I got her wrong. I knew a lot of people who hung out there all the time. I went there, occasionally. The parking lot there was probably the only place in G-town where you could find parking on a weekend night. I think they tore the whole thing down to build 2233 Wisconsin, but I wasn't living here when they tore it all down. I cam e back and discovered Ol' Clancy's was gonezo.

I only saw the son-in-law once, and he was blitzed, alright.

People told me about the bouncer, but I forget his name, now. They said don't let him fool you. I saw him open a serious can of ass-whupp on some guy twice his size and with far more muscles. The guy kept trying to touch the dancers, which was against the law, at the time. You couldn't even put a tip in their garter. Anyhow, the bouncer kept asking him nicely to keep his hands to himself and finally told him to leave. They guy wouldn't, so the bouncer let him know he was on his way out and was not to return.

Our Late Mayor For Life used to hang out at the CLancy's on Good Hope Rd.

That place was opened back when Anacostia was mostly white YES, there was a time when Anacostia, and a lot of SE was mostly white. The last vestige of that was Naylor Gardens, which stayed all white until the late 1980s. The Manager there refused to rent to blacks. Everybody knew about it and the property owners and even the DC Govt. just put up with it. The Mamager finally retired, so the policy changed. Anyhow, Ernie kept the place going once Anacostia flipped.

Ernie supposedly came up under the wing of Emmit What's-is-name, a well known DC numbers runner and bookie who lived above Glover Park. Another one of Emmit's proteges ran a phone bookie joint off Penn Ave, SE on the Hill until the mid 1990s, when he died. The only bookie I know who's even remotely connected to that whole tree anymore is old, now, too, and only makes book part time, anymore and only for his regulars.

I never met Ernie's girlfriend, but heard about her.

The OLD Mr. Days, before Bobby Lee sold it to the parking lot people. Never the same in the new venue across the alley.

I LOVED THIS BAR! Thank you, Bobby Lee, for changing it from the Cave. My home-away-from-home. The backdoor was a great place to get in and out of. Rally in the Alley was always a highlight for the restaurants and bars in the area. Mike the bartender and Paul ruled!

Awesome pinball machines. Nightly specials of food, i.e., lobster, salad, and baked potato (won't mention the very low price you offered)!

The bands were the best. Everything about Mr. Days was the best. Met and made some very good friends there.

Thank you, Bobby Lee, for making this venue a fantastic ride.

Mr. Day's was hot when I worked at Cousteau's in the early 80's - that is where a lot of the NW Bartenders and waitrons would go. Earl the bartender and Shelley also worked there and at cousteaus I believe.

Not much activity on here. I last posted a few years ago regarding playing at the Crazy Horse the summer of 1969 for 16 weeks.

In one post, I saw mention of a VA club named Club 1320. No one seemed to remember it or follow up. We played there also. It was a club with topless Go-Go dancers! A little risque for the times. The only other interesting thing I remember about it, was asking the owner where the name came from. It seems he was into drag strip racing, and a 1/4 mile (the length of the timed strip run) as 1,320 feet.....and so he decided to name the club for the "strip".....1320. Guess we all have our ideas.

Keep enjoying the posting here, they might not last forever. I was just on another site, and saw (true or not, I can not verify) that a former member of the Telstars, who played at the Bayou as the house band from about 1966 to 1968. The former drummer was named Ronnie Wison, and it was reported he died in 2016. I was 17 when I first saw the Telstars in Ocean City. visited them often at the Bayou, when they were there, and now feel 100 after reading some of the posts on here.

Rock on people, we all have a time to go, it won't last forever. Peace.

I remember the old Tune Inn, It's still there, but it's not the same.

There was another place on Penn Ave, SE, too. This old redneck ran it. I forget its name. He had a pool table, there.

Matt Kane's on 13th? Dorothy the bartender?

Who was your roommmate? I worked there from 1977 to 1986. My brother Matt was a part owner. The 21st was awesome.

anyone remember Fricky's in DC from the early 70s? It was around GW just off Penn Ave NW and about 2 or 3 steps below street level. A fun place with a great bartender. My roomies and I went there several times. Here's an exchange between roomie Frank and the bartender
Bartender (BT): what can I get you?
Frank: I'll have a Panther Punch.
BT: I don't know that one. How do you make it?
Frank: 1/2 sarsaparilla, 1/2 ginger ale and a wild cat's eyeball
BT (with no hesitation): Sorry we're out of ginger ale.
The BT was so quick with his reply to my wiseacre roomie it was great and a story I haven't forgotten.

I waitressed at all three of these clubs 1959/1960. They were all happening places. Met a lot of entertainers...Sam Cook, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino were a few that would stop in at the Hayloft to see Phil and TNT. Big Al Downing played a lot at Rands.

Army buddies used to frequent Clancy's on Wisconsin Ave a lot in '71 & '72 while we were stationed at Ft. Belvoir. One of the few places you could go and not get hassled for being in the service. We got to know the owner well enough that we sometimes worked the door for him and behind the bar. And we got to know a lot of the topless dancers. Particularly "Dirty Carol".

Speaking of Annie's..my daughters would go there often...one even met her husband there. Notable was Annie's was originally Bocaccio's where I hung out in the 70's.! LOL

I also frequented the Tombs, Georgetown Underground, The French Underground (Dupont Circle) Bixby's Warehouse [Connecticut Ave area]; Public House; etc etc. Miss those days [sighing]

Great memories!
Loved the Pier to this day... it was my first! And I went at age 16!
Never made it to The Underground but it was the bomb around the same time.
Moved on to dancing at "Numbers".
