I used to go to the Bayou also, back in 70, 71. It was under the ,I think George Washington bridge in Georgetown. A band called Oddysey played there, they later changed their name to The Seven Ups. And sometimes I'd go to a place called Clancy's, I was only 17 at the time but DC treated servicemen well back then. There were some rough times during Viet Nam, what with all the protest movements centered in and around DC at the time.

They had beer at the 29 Tastee diner in Fairfax and a juke box when I was able to legally drink on July 1st 1974. When Virginia changed the age to 18 from 21. I was going on 21 dammn it.. Does the 29 qualify as a Bar??

True, the list is a little lean and repetitive. Only had a few favorite bars/clubs back in the day. Still a great thread and those were some awesome times.

No, not a mistake, 29 Diner did have beer, and July 1st 1974 was the date Va law changed to allow 18 year olds the right to buy beer. Now Wine, Hard liquor? I don't remember, never liked that stuff. I think it may have still been 21.

Now 3.2 beer was available in some counties in Va. And may have been all they could sell. And NOVA had it at huge GREAT Loud Music parties in the café at Annandale and you only had to be 18 to drink that. And that was before 1974.

Now as a bar.The 29 I was just just kidding.. I had been to G Town too back then. The Bayou, some others like the.... The oh well been a while.. Did not really care for the DC scene. Parking, driving home.., Bla, No Metro back then, Subway that is. Why bother with DC hassles when "The Wagon Wheel" beckoned! Then Louies Rock City, Hunters Lodge, Talies, Pickett Inn, Pizza Kazanos, Batchlors 2 ,Vienna Inn,NOVA, Geo Mason, and Keg parties in fields like out Clifton way, of our own doing! And of course PJ Skiddos. Just some cold beer. As said never cared for the hard stuff. Hic!

Drunk Cop at Road Block: Showing badge " No drinking tonight officers" Hic!..
Police officer at road block, Why your fine sir ! You may pass!

Va State Trooper getting speeding ticket, about to sign ticket, has not shown badge. "I hope officer, that when you see me in court . That as I am a Virginia State Trooper, you will not change any of the facts in this case" Cop writing ticket. Uhh. May I see your badge.. Uhh.. well keep the speed down.. Trooper..

Virginia State Trooper to FBI Agent that has shown badge for speeding ticket in personal car : That's a nice badge sir, But I am not checking badges today. Please sign your name firmly, you are making 4 copies.

First, congratulations on telling a bunch of strangers your birthday.

Second, Virginia didn't go full 21 until the '80s. If you could drink in 1974 that wouldn't have caused you any problem. But then, you do often get things wrong. Don't doubt me, boy.

No mistake and July 1st is not my BD LOL don't try to order Ginsu Knives with that one on me.

Yes July 1st 1974 was when Va allowed the purchase of beer, real beer at age 18.

> Now Wine, Hard liquor? I don't remember, never liked that stuff. I think it may have still been 21.

^^ And as I said I don't remember hard liquor age.

I do remember that at "some time Va . allowed hard liquor at 18. Then it all went back to 21.

The whole deal at the time was the Vietnam War. Old Enough to die for your country old enough to vote and have a beer at least. You would think they would let troops today at least buy a beer at 18 for their service.

I voted in 1972 for Richard M Nixon for President. The first group of 18 yr olds to do so. I voted for Jimmy Carter in 1976 for change. Jimmy was a good man good heart. God bless him in his cancer fight. he was the only Democrat President I ever voted for, though I have voted for many Democrats over the years. Learning curve you know. Today No Way..The Democrat party is the party of freaks.

I also remember when in Va you could not buy a drink in a restaurant, you brought your own bottle BYOB. they called it. And the places served mixers , Ice, soda at a price. That was just a bit before my time.

In New York back then you could buy hard liquor at age 18 and that had been NY Law for a long time. That's all gone today as well as the Feds pressured the states with bribe money for roads .. "Projects" Welfare, to change state laws to age 21 across America to buy booze.

Wash Post article back in 1977. NOVA people wanted to raise beer drinking age from 18 to 19. It went thru several years later.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1977/01/19/beer-drinking-age-rise-argued-in-va-assembly/9ed742f0-4436-4f53-8528-b0d1f00b2fbe/

I though people could buy hard liquor at age 18 in Va. In the 80's .I was wrong, looks like its always been 21. I rarely drank hard liquor or went in a ABC store and the crowd I was with had several over 21 when I was a bit younger and they brought hard liquor to parties. By the 80's I was well past 21 and did not hang with people that young.

Interesting article.

One that appeared later, in the early part of '79, seemed to cite the Fort Hunt Fire as another reason to raise the drinking age.

Maybe this thread and the Fort Hunt Fire thread should now be merged.

Ricky G what great memories! I went to Mt. V college during that time, worked at Sarsfield's, Joe McSomeone hired me and was manager, nice guy.

Hung out at Third Edition, Chadwicks and Winstons, my favorite! I don't remember any nudity but was not there after hours.

I do remember great tunes from Nards, much dancing (remember 'gatoring?!), the chicken wings (only food I remember there), doing shots-a waiter, Soupy, would come out with a tray! I feel sorry for young people today-in a way it was really innocent though rowdy fun. There are cabaret laws now and restrictions on noise from live and recorded music. Lat summer I was telling my daughter, who goes to AU, about how there were certain songs at Winstons that when played people would stand on the bar, the stools, and clap along to them- Squeeze Box, Rosalita, and Macho Man come to mind.
Thanks for sparking these memories!

I was station at Quantico VA in 1985 while in the USMC and I spent a lot of great times in the bars in the Georgetown area. I use to park my car at the old gas station, base of the stairs where the filmed the Exorcist. Question, I remember going to a club and you walked down stairs and it had a fire truck in it. Do you know what the name of that place was. Thanks for your help, great memories, thanks.

I went for college guys and military myself. The Tombs was one of my favorites! Shout out! Soooo much cock....

Fantastic Fritzbe's Flying Food Factory was the first venture by Great American Restaurants after the success of Pico's Pizza in downtown Fairfax. The first Fritzbe's to open was in Annandale in 1976. It is now Silverado. Later locations included Fairfax Circle (now Artie's), Reston which was later sold, and Rockville which was ultimately closed. GAR did not return to Maryland until Coastal Flats opened in Gaithersburg with a 1950's Florida seacoast theme in September 2014.

Great list so far, but no list is complete with out The Irish Times, late last call, Pete Papageorge, the crazies and possibly drunkest barshift in the city. Kelly, Shhroder, Cowboy Bob, Corboy, Looney, Milo, Jimmy Curran, even an occasional girl behind the bar, Casey...I think. And Big AL at the door. The bar crew was as crazy as the bar crowd. The later opening Swerve, a disaster waiting for a place to happen. 3am closing time too.

Oh, yes. The Wax Museum. It was located in Southwest DC. I don't exactly recall the street, though. All the walls were black. There were curtains and the remnants of the wax figures from the club's prior incarnation when it actually was a legitimate wax museum and not a club.

Does anybody remember a bar in Georgetown (Wisconsin Avenue) called KIKI's? It featured a Scopitone. For those who don't know what that is, it was a glorified juke box that cost a quarter a play (in the days when juke boxes charged a five or ten cents) but, unlike a jukebox, there was a small screen on top on which you could watch the actual singers. A forerunner of MTV. I only went into KIKI's a couple of times to drink beer. I was just 18 at the time and thought how sophisticated I was sitting in what looked like a kind of quirky grown-up bar drinking with the big folks. Another bar that I used to pass when I'd go to work at the old Main Navy building (it ran from 17th-19th Streets on Constitution Avenue, NW) was something called the Moonlight Bar and Lounge on 18th Street, somewhere around G I believe. This small bar was half way below/above ground. You might ask why anyone would site a bar in that location. Back then, before George Washington University gobbled up over half of the city's West End, there were apartments and houses in that area. The apartments were generally geared for single government employees, many of whom came to DC during WW-II.

I believe The Wax Museum wasn't in DC but rather Falls Church, VA.

While I don't remember exactly where I do remember seeing Tina Turner and Edgar Winter two separate times at the Wax Museum.

You mean specifically Root Boy Slim and the Sex Change Band w/The Rootettes.

I saw him at the Brick House in MD. I bought an album and he signed it. I still have it hanging on my wall. It was Dog Secretes.

We used to go to the anex(spelling?) on half street in sw DC. Things didn't really get started till 11 or 12 and the neighborhood was rough. Tracks was still a straight bar most nights and not too far. All the standard Georgetown bars. Celler door at 35th and M. Louie's rock city was a large painted all black interior cool dive of a placewhen you were 18. We used to go in just to drink and give the local bands shit. Could still drink beer anywhere at 18 in my senior year. Not that it mattered because we would cruse all the small korean run grocery stores and buy beer when we were 15. They didn't get the abc laws at all in the 70s. Uncle Sams at Braddock and 495 edge of Annandale, sunset grill, and I'll count fritzbies cause they would sell beer if you played it cool and ordered some food. We d get kegs for party's at dixie liquor at the end of key bridge in Georgetown. So much time chasing beer. Ridiculous.

Remember Gunshers? On M St near Key Bridge? One night some friends of mine were in there and ran their tab way beyond the cash they had. Figured they could dash out and run across Key Bridge back to Virginia. They were way to drunk to make it so one of them decided to jump into the bushes next to the bridge and hide. But those "bushes" were tree tops and he fell like 15 feet breaking his ankle. Almost lost his athletic scholarship, but had a great story.

I attended the Ha'Penny Lion sometime in 1997-98. Got awesomely buzzed!

There was a great steakhouse on 16th St. called Fran O'Brien's. Also visited 1997-98.

There was a bar called Harry's at one time, with the red door and all. Not the current Harry's Restaurant. A long, narrow, hole in the wall. That visit was also late '90's, or perhaps 2001.

Was more run down than sleezy Dancers who were fired from the Park or its owners other club, The Godfather usually looked for work there. There was also GodGuys, too pretentious for me to deal with, The Starlight Inn on RTE 1 was toppless with a drive thru bar and stage 3 feet from the end window. Second main stage was not so drafty. Funny you could dance at 18, not waitress. 1964 birthdays grandfathered in to the old drinking laws more or less. 99% history now...Gogonova6 (Tanya)

That bar in St. Elmo's was the Third Edition in GTown. They shot a few scenes ther and that flick pretty much captured the bar scene, the booze and the blow that fueled that Preppy bar and the vacuous period called the 80's.

Ummm...your math doesnt add up. Virginia went from being 18 to 21 in 1985. If you could drink at 18 in 1974 you were WAY beyond 21 in 1985

Also, even if you had turned 18 the day before the law changed, you could still drink. There was a "rolling legal birthdate" until everyone previously able to drink hit 21, then the rule was a hard and fast 21.

It's been established that Double Action Jackson is no stranger to getting it wrong.

I saw several mentions of the Keg. Used to go there on Wednesday nights in the 70's to see DC Dog. Best bar band I ever saw. Nils Lofgren would often sit in. Jimmy Nalls was the DC Dog guitar player. Nalls and Lofgren would push each other to the limits and the end result was some fabulous music.

I realize this was actually in Virginia but I used to go to the Crystal City Underground where on weekends they turned the food court area into a disco. They would turn the lights down low and turn on colored spot lights and a mirror ball for slow songs. The daily fast food vendors would close at night but a couple of places remained open and they sold alcohol and food. Then there was a classy type bar at the Stouffers hotel in Crystal city that I've long forgotten the name of. I was 18-21 years old then (the drinking age changed on some of us during that time) and I'm 58 now. Wow, where does the time go. Every place has changed, nothing looks the same anymore so just keep the memories in your heart. Look forward to where life is about to happen. Remembering the past will make you feel old, living for the future will keep you feeling young,, if you do life right.

Worked in Crystal City in the late 80s and early 90s and loved it. Everyone worked for Navy contractors and every contract was staffed the same. Three retired Capt or Cdr and two dozen folks fresh out of college. The women were hot and dressed nice. Was back there for the first time in ages about a month ago. Brought back many memories.
