East side between K and Pennsylvania. Terrfic place. Stoplights and Kamikazes. You could probably find the door, but after that, it was a crapshoot. Monopolized the corner tables between the jukebox and the street on Friday nights. Or out on the sidewalk when the weather was nice. But there were either two F's or two P's in the name. And speaking of which, This Is It? had a question mark at the end, and it was Au Pied de Cochcon in Georgetown.

Nudie fans may remember Club 915, across 14th Street from This Is It? and Casino Royale. Tiny place next door to Franklin Park Liquors. And if you didn't mind the risk of being stabbed by the bouncer, the Night Cap Cafe on L Street had about the best blues jukebox in town. Right down from the Post Pub which has had its moments as well.

Anyway, Flipp's or FFlip's closed or was bought out or something. Next stop was Buckley's on the 2nd floor of the Quality Inn or whatever it was on the NW corner of 13th and K. The bartender Greg threw darts and we all threw darts and they had free food at happy hour (pretty good food too). So a mixed group of eight or ten of us would go in there, eat the free food, drink pitchers and throw darts all night, get the check at 11:30 (Metro closed at midnight then) and the tab would be like $27.50. Oh, okay. And the tip was like $50. Every now and then actual hotel guests would walk in, look around, and leave again. Oh well. Stoney's was at 13th and L. That was a nice place too, especially in the summer but no darts. The Black Rooster (L between 19th and 20th) had darts and was pretty nice too before they remodeled and all the prices went up. The Crow Bar was nice enough until the bikers took over. Front Page had free tacos at happy hour and $5 buckets of Corornas on Thursdays. That was definitely nice!

I tended bar at the following DC and NOVA bars between 1983 and 1988:

Fish Market (Georgetown)
Fish Market (Alexandria)
Mr. Smith's (Georgetown)
Crazy Horse (Georgetown)
Champions (Georgetown)
Champions (Falls Church)
Slade's (Ballston)

And another one I can't member the name of, located in Dupont Circle below Chicago Bar & Grill. Didn't work there long, but the music was so overpoweringly loud it caused me permanent hearing damage.

Eventually I decided to join the rat race, but what a fun way to spend my 20s in the the years before straight people began to worry about AIDS.

"Numbers" was the place to go back in the disco days. I remember a great party they had planned one night - food included. There was a very long line that formed waiting to get to the food. I met a guy standing behind me, started chatting, then ended up sitting in a booth and kissed the rest of the night - never did get to the food! Loved those free, noncommittal days of the late 60's and 70's.

Does anyone remember the name of the small, quaint Irish pub on Connecticut Ave. back in the 70's? Think it may be around 1300 or 1400.

What memories I remember here! I loves going to Gtown to see the bands and the crowds were always moving from Crazy Horse Pall Mall Winston's and the Bayou and the slide Beneath it All. I also loved The Fish Market and for a short time Pentagons. So many friends that loved The greasy but wonderful gyros two doors down from the Crazy Horse. Last time I was in the Crazy Horse was the night Princess Diana passed away and my friend Andy was bartending. I once bar tended there while going to school.

Malarkey's was one that my friends and I frequented. Lots of GTown and GW girls driving mom and dads Benz's and Volvos. Good place to go after pre gaming. Manhattans in Rockville. Great place to end the night. Stayed open late and they didn't care in those days if you left with drinks. Good times.

The Montage was a great bar in 71 and 72. The Eye was the house band and they covered almost everything and did it great. No go-go dancers. The Metro shut them down.

Favorite hangout was Pierce Street Annex in the 80's, and I was there, too, when Rick Springfield made an appearance--walked right next to me. What a thrill! This was when "Jesse's Girl" was at the top of the charts. Favorite disco was The Plum, Deja Vu (Blackie's), and also Rumours, and Bronco Billy's.

Babes on upper Wisconsin. Great broadcaster bar, closest thing to Cheers I ever knew. Pinball machines and Asteroids in the front at the end of the bar - perfect. Manny the owner, Doug the bartender, darn good London broil. Good times, great folks.

My band played for 16 weeks at the Crazy Horse in the summer of 1969...anyone on here old enough to remember that far back!? We took Sunday off, other than once we played 21 straight nights there. Played the Sundays so we did not have to break down the equipment and to get tighter. We got tighter, and very tired!

Great club, and a great summer. We were called E.S. Grit and auditioned for the job at the Blue Max, but wound up being the house band for the Crazy Horse. Lotta bars on M street back then, along with others like the Bayou that were off street.

DC/Georgetown was the place to be back then....probably still is in a different way.

The posts on here brought back many memories. We got our start listening to the Telstars in Ocean City and then the Bayou back then. Probably some people on here remember them and even saw them in Ocean City in 1964. Here is a site I found the other day, listing some information about them. It mixed them up w/ another group by that name.
http://expo67-cavestones.blogspot.com/2007/10/telstars.html#comment-form

I would post some picts of the stage and the 5 Cent beer signs if I knew how!

That my friend, is me, playing a Fender 12 String, probably a 1967 or 68 model. Just played it last week, so I still have it.

It came from Chuck Levin's...not downtown DC but after he was burned out and moved to Suitland. It has Special stamped on the neck and body, I never did know what that meant.

I had a Fender Jaguar, and a Gibson SG on stage at that time also. Still have them also.

Still plays nice. They called those necks "hockey stick" style back then.

Anyone remember a club called The Blue Max?

It was on the right hand side on a corner just before you turned onto the bridge to go into VA..the one hit by the plane.

It was a hole in the wall, it was there in 1969....not sure after that.

fAter a fallow period in the mid Seventies, the band experienced a revival during the late 1970s and early 1980s with albums Sleepwalker, Misfits, Low Budget, Give the People What They Want and State of Confusion. In addition, groups such as Van Halen, the Jam, the Knack, the Pretenders and the Fall covered their songs, helping to boost the Kinks' record sales. In the 1990s, Britpop acts such as Blur and Oasis cited the band as a major influence.[1] The Kinks broke up in 1996, a result of the commercial failures of their last few albums and creative tension between the Davies brothers.[6] Sully Rd South onto lee Jackson Memorial Hwy into Chantilly, check status of machines at Fair Oaks Mall. Return any defective parts that are present. If you have not heard from Bill Splevins or Mara Toles at this time, continue to Fairfax County Court house. Don't park on Judicial Drive. They were the second group of the British Invasion on The Ed Sullivan Show, appearing in March for two weeks after the Beatles appeared three straight weeks in February 1964. For some time the Dave Clark Five were more popular in the US than in their native UK, but had a renaissance in the UK between 1967 and 1970. The group disbanded in late 1970. On 10 March 2008, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[2]

Your last point is well taken...a zillion bytes of music on the net, everyone is a "recording artist" not.

The group formed in 1964, and I continued w/ them until fall 1970, then left to begin teaching. We played DC in 69 and VA in 1070. They went on w/ another guitarist after I left.... and a few months later in Feb 1971, the bass player was shot and killed accidently.

They then replaced him and were popular for about 9 more years. They did some recording (I just got email today from the original drummer w/ memories about that time and am going to put it on the website we have in the next day or so.) in NY, a 45 (wow) and an LP...and were supposed to tour w/ Foghat but that fell through, and they eventually folded about 1980.

The drummer and I, and the replacement for me are the only ones alive w/ the history of the band now.

I put a website here http://esgrit.homestead.com/ with the history and at the bottom there will be more of the later years in a week or two. Thanks for asking. I still have that Fender 12 and played that 12 string from that photo, just last night!

Do you remember the Telstars at the Bayou, or was that a century before your time? Ever visit The Crazy Horse in 1969!?

Amazing trip down ol' Memory Ln.

I arrived in DC summer of 1981 and remember that roller stake rentals was a fad - though it faded quickly.

Other than Old-Town, Virginia was pretty lame back then due to archaic drinking laws, but I recall a place called Bombay Bicycle Club with Backgammon tables that was decent. There was Whitey's (Broasted Chicken) on Washington Blvd. Some awesome place in Fairfax City that I can't recall the name of.

Once I moved to DC, the goto places were 19th & M and GTown - especially Sign of the Whale, Madhatter, Flaps - and Gusti's

A place called Dakota's in Adams Morgan was great for a while

Only stayed in DC for a short while in the early 80's. Remember getting drunk at Poseurs a lot because of all the punky foxes down there. Used to meet at a store called smash and then head down there with some of the DC punk crew. I had my 21st there. Did the old 9.30 a lot, saw many punk acts like the UK Subs there. A tough ass girl named Joyce worked the bar, she used to slip me the occasional drink. Great scene and fun times but it could be violent, my friend got stabbed in the kidney by some drunks one night and nearly died. Fun(ish) times.

Not to far from the old Greyhound bus terminal ( about 2 blocks ) a place called "Vinnies" ----- Rough , drinking, fighting , best of R & R . Was also close to "Rands" 7 "The Hayloft" . "Guys" , "The Round up" ( same guy owned both of them which were next door to each other. One day he broke through the party wall with a sledge hammer so patrons could go from one to the other with out going out side. stayed that way for a couple of years with no trim or any thing. All you had to do to enjoy the places was be willing to fight and drink ) about 100 yards from the 8 th. Street S.E. Marine Corp. Barraks.

I waited tables and tended bar at Winstons on M in 78, 79 and 80...

Back then Paul Loukas owned Winstons and Paul Mall, LeJardin. Kevin Spillane was service bartender, I worked in middle between Kevin and owners nephew, Billy Loukas who worked front of house with John Bidwell, Steve ?, Mark Hudson worked upstairs mostly AU hangout and very preppie, TK also.. Rabbit was from AU and a waiter with me and Buddy Jenkins the manager who made us do screwdriver chugs after hours, plenty of c and he'd fire you if you went home at 3. I remember draft beers were 1.25, 3 rail liquor 2.75. Bar opened at 6:30pm and last call 2:30 but we had parties going all night, card games, just crazy times in there after hours. Then if you stayed at winstons all night you got out of there at 7 or 8am into blinding white light and running into DC homeless Sky King who drank out of all the trash cans up and down M Street. lol. I was just 19 when I was put behind the bar with 700 or so coming through the door on Fri and Sat nights. One night it snowed all night and they made that winter Georgetown poster of Wisconsin ave snowed under the next morning we walked home. Mike Nardello did No Skin No Win dance contest every monday. Crazy fun. Every couple was naked by the end of the night. They locked all the doors and hired a stripper to take her clothes off - slow so everyone would follow. Doormen were all ex-marines and crazy - loved to fight and knock people out of there. There was an Attorney w/Mustache / beard who took a ton of pictures every Monday at NSNW - he got married late at 50ish - great guy can't remember his name. Would love to reconnect with some of these guys for a good laugh. Ran into TK in virginia, Kevin was at Black rooster 15 years ago or so.... Oh and Nards DJ was Goldie and others... all were wild. We used to hand out at 3rd, my bro worked at FScotts - after hours card games with Stokes, Bidwell, Terry Cullen, etc... just absolute insanity for a few plus years. If anyone knows anyone at this time where they are, let me know. RG

Haha our vip pass is one person would pay and then go and open the bathroom window for the rest of us..we also used to sneak into the Capital Centre by climbing a pine tree to the roof, bust open the vents up top, shimmy along the rafter girders, drop into the spotlight room, clean up in the bathroom then walk to sky suites and join a party like we were supposed to be there. Got asked to leave the room many times but would just go to another sky suite

Since this post says DC 'area' and all posts seem to be about DC alone, lets head south to my old stomping grounds ....

1.Hillbilly Heaven - Lorton
2.Ft. Belvoir Grill -Ft. Belvoir
3.Mama Muns (then Paradise Club later) - Accotink Village
4.Honolulu Restaurant- Alexandria

There was one at intersection of Rt 1 and South Kings Highway that sat in an island, a small square place that used to have bands. Cant remember name.

I got married in 1960 which ended my clubing. The Hayloft and Rands were in full swing and I think Bennies came on the scene about 1958. These were not bars. They only served one brand of beer. You went there to listen to the great music, to dance or chase the girls. I don't remember many of the bands, but of course I remember Phil Flowers. I think I heard him do "I've Got A Woman" before I heard Ray Charles. He also did a great version of "I'll Put A Spell On You" (Howlin' Wolf).

Another point not often mentioned is the effectiveness of the bouncers. There was one big enough to scare most guys into line and if that didn't work, there was a smaller guy with lightning fast hands. Only an idiot would challenge either of them and there was an endless supply of idiots.

Way up 14th, near Georgia Ave, was a place called "the Showboat" with a downstairs bar that featured the great Charlie Byrd, classical and jazz guitar.

Of course, if you were into Dixieland music, you went to The Bayou, under the freeway in Georgetown, and there was a bar on M Street whose name escapes me that packed the house on Talent Night.

All of that was a long time ago...seems like yesterday.

Honolulu Restaurant-I think I remember that...was that on Telegraph Road, near the beltway, and taken down as a result of the beltway exit re-routing a few years back?

Also, Belvoir Grill...is that on Rt 1 heading south near the Belvoir Gate, just before Burger King?

When did that get torn down? How long was it there?

The Georgetown bar where you went down the stairs was the Toombs. It is still the same. Still has same décor and the WWI German Army recruiting poster "Und Inr? Restarant above the Toombs is called 1789 more of an upscale place. Toombs was a great place to make new friends of the female persuasion as tables and booths were packed in so tight you had to get to know the folks at the table next door. The fact that it was full of young people and students helped. Great cheesburgers cooked over charcoal!

Seeing the above picture of The Butterfly trips me out. I played there in 1973 with Rich Johnston in a band called Rushmore. We played along side of Blitz and then took over as the house band when they left.

After a while, the band split up, and three of us formed a new band that had a singer named Fran Tate, who later married Bill Payne from Little Feat. Rich recruited new members, and the band eventally evolved into Koala, a popuar DC band.

Randy Masincupp from Bentwood Rocker sang for that band, and Carl Cable from Tim Eyermann and the East Coast Offering played bass for a while. Koala used to play Manny's in Rockville a lot. I played so many clubs in DC back then - Manny's, Pall Mall, Key Bridge Marriot, Library, Bastille, Holiday Inns, Ramada Inns, you name it, but I moved to Daytona Beach, FL in 1983 and haven't been back since. Great scence though.

I was raised outside Atlantic City, and we had a great scene there also. But I made my bones in DC and it sure was a special time in my life. So many great bands of all genres, not to mention all the national acts passing through town. Really wonderful scene!

I just created a post about The Butterfly and the DC scene in the 70's, but I forgot to hit reply, so mine went to the very bottom of the thread. Long story short, I was a pro musician in the DC area from 1972-83, and was in Rushmore, the house band at the Butterfly in 1973 after Blitz. Randy Masincupp from Bentwood Rocker went out with my ex-wife for a while after we split up.

Lot of great memories. I played everywhere and knew all the guys back then - Don Lilly from Buttons, Danny Garett from Blitz, Wade Beach (jazz pianist, but played at Black Greco with Octagon), Duke who played piano upstairs at Mr. Smith's. Carl Cable from Tim Eyerman and the East Coast Offering was my roomate for a while, and we played together in a band called Scandal (before the famous band Scandal).

I had a band called Hummingbird, and two of the guys, John Spiro and Phil Shimmel, went on to form the band Silver Spring. They recorded a couple of albums and played all over Georgetown. Played the Hanger Club one of the first weeks that they had the male dancers. Nothing but a dozen dancers, us, and two hundred very happy women.

Love those days. Got a million stories, but that's for some other time... Am really happy to have found this thread.

I know this is an old thread, but I don't think the following places were mentioned:

Duddingtons on Capitol Hill
Psychedeli in Bethesda
Club Soda on Connecticut. Steve Smith and the Nakeds were pretty much the club band there. Had the best waitress there.
And Northern Virginia's own The Quarterdeck, which used to be just a great neighborhood bar back in the 80's.

Good old days.

A former resident of DC, clubs were so fantastic, Casino Royale, The Peppermint Twist, restaurants, Luigis, these were in George Town, or on about 14th st. downtown. also The Speakeasy, a disco, with peanuts and dancing upstairs at Casino Royale, nightly dance contests, so much fun.

I lived in DC in the late 60's and until about 1972. Loved it there, used to frequent the most often The Casino Royale, because it was the best dance club. The Dovels used to go there all the time, and the guy who was the song Jimmy Mac used to date my roommate. Those were the glory days, also used to frequent Georgetown bars and restaurants. Dated the manager of The Peppermint Twist.

I remember Casino Royale. It was a sleazy strip bar that offered other stuff in the back rooms. 14th street back in the 70s and 80s was so sleazy! Hookers all over the place , peep shows, drug paraphanalia stores. It was crazy. I had a lot of sleazy encounters in the mid eighties while I was in high school. Lots of fun. Easy to get laid for a decent price.

Well, I'm here to tell you I was the manager of Clancy's, that dump next to the Keg, and will "defend" for a few words the rep. Started out as a roast beef sandwich parlor though quickly scaled down to topless. Thing is the "girls", and some were just girls were by far the most attractive in D.C. area. False bravado or not I wanted to have the upscale topless place around. Anyway, I also worked at the Palm Restaurant, Clyde's in Georgetown and was the GM of The Palm restaurant on Capitol Hill just up from the Hawk & Dove.

Brickskellar was run by my best friend Dave Moyes and my wife worked there as a waitress. Sat many a night drinking beer waiting for Sandy to finish work.

Library was another great bar. Also opened a "copy" of the Cellar Door on Capitol Hill where Emmy Lou Harris, Breakfast Again and other up and coming groups would come to work. Wonderful nights listening to Emmy! D.C. was a great place to work in the bar biz.

Yeah, Windsor McKay's was great. Was my regular last call hangout, even in the snow. What ever happened to the brothers and sister that owned that place.

great night in DC meant cruzin on my bike first to Old Mac's over the Key Bridge. Then a gig by Leo Kottke at the Cellar Door. And finishing up at the Bayou getting down to the Cherry People. Many great memories. I lived all around Northern Virginia but worked at the Post Office in Fairfax from 1970 to 1980. I was a mailman and my route was along Chain Bridge Road and the apartments and businesses. Used to eat lunch at Ranch House Restaurant where I met Joe Theismann. He worked in the off season for Ted Britt Ford. Also on my route at townhouses at the Assembly lived 2 Redskins. Diron Talbert and Bill Brundige.

At the Wax Museum, I saw the best on stage performance of my life. Tina Turner was on her come-back tour after leaving Ike. Later, after she made it on her own, she played much larger venues. We caught her act at the perfect time. We had front row seats. The non-stop energy she put out was infectious. You could run two marathons and would have used fewer calories than Tina in that two hour performance. She and her back up band and dancers were amazing.
