My first DC club was Pattons. Then it was:

Cagneys
Abbey Road
Chicago's
Bojangles

Then I moved on to the Vault which led me to my favorite club The Roxy. 5th Coluvm had a cool basement space. Of course Tracks. And Ballroom/Capital Ballroom/Nation. The best of times!

The Tombs was in Georgetown, under the 1789 restaurant.

Try Maggies and Devonshire at Tenley Circle.
The Hayloft, with Phil Flowers
Lord Telefords (dart bar)
Rands
Rocket Room (at the bus terminal)
the Shamrock in G'town, w/Country Gentlemen
Crazy Horse (next to the Shamrock)
Casino Royale (14th St.)
Zebra Room
Bennies Rebel Room (14th St.)
Ben's Hidaway (close to U of Md)

Those are for openers...

This is such an awesome thread. I found it while listening to an extented mix of Donna Summer's Love to Love You Baby. All these bars really bring back some really great, great, totally awesome memories.Really good times!

I've been racking my brains out on this bar: It was a downstairs bar around the corner from Abbey Road. We used to go back and forth between them and it had a fire engine DJ booth. Was it Bojangles? We used to get chillidogs right outside.

And, was the Rally In the Alley hosted by Mr. Days?

Also - anyone remember the Santa fe Cafe, Paragon and surfing the floor while Hawaii Five O was playing at the Vous in College Park?

Did I say these were great times?

Joe,

It me a minute to recall but I finally sussed it out. Abbey Roads was the bar with the firetruck, used to have lots of jarheads and free beer from open at 8pm til 10pm on Wed nights, we used to hit that and then right before 10 wander up to the other bar you mentioned, it was the Dome at that time but had formerly been Bojangles.

I still recall a night me and my buddy were going to grab hotdogs there were two vendors side by side and each was trying to get us to buy from him, each deriding the others fare...

"My hotdog is all beef, his is from lips of donkey!"

Funniest shit ever, haven't thought of that in years, still makes me laugh...

Worked at Cousteau's on L.st for 3 years, bar backing part time on weekends. Worked at MCI on 17th st. Cousteau's was a Great Place and developed and lost touch with some great friends. Some gone on to heaven. Some gone on to fame. Lived in Crystal City and partied hard at the "Underground" and the "Pier" on First st. DC.

Hung tough and looked for the ladies at:

Rumors
Bullfeathers
Mr. Days
All over Adams Morgan

Reading all of this bought back some great memories

i used to watch John Harbison every friday night in some bar in DC I can't remember the name. it was not in Georgetown but rather further into the city amybe K Street not sure.

It was him on the small stage playing piano and singing. You had to go down some stairs to get inside. Laid back bar.

Also used to go to see the lone Star band in GeorgeTown in a bar kinda across from Little Tavern.

Speaking of Little Tavern NO ONE here is mentioning the after party in Georgetown when all the bar goers would stream out onto the streets and get munchies at places like Club LT, American Grill, a pizza place 2 doors downtown from Crazy Horse and the wild scene in the Gtown 7/11 around 4am with burrtios in the microwave.

Let me paint a late nite bazar picture for you.......Club LT was its own scene...a classic Gtown late nite horror show with that street guy yelling proverbs at one of the cooks... the smell of onions, steam and burgers that have been cooking for weeks... a transvestite without her wig, root boy sitting at the counter eating about 4 slinders at once and of course one or two gtown university freshman puking outside...gooooood times indeeeed

Yea I was there

And as I walk out of that Little Tavern and down that avenue, that avenue of a hundred bars and a thousand nights it occurs to me that this place has always been my home no matter how far I travel. I keep walking and turn toward Key Bridge. I begin to walk across the river and as the lights and sounds of my youth hover behind me I look up at the Marriott as I always do to that room...and I see a silhouette or some lost memory of my hero of the time as he looks back down at me. I still remember the man and love his music but time always loves a hero.

"The beauty of the sunrise and sunset
To his friends he wish he could tell
They're at home still runnin' for bells
Better San Juan than that blue collar hell "

Sorry about that. Whenver I go back to the memories of georgetown and GW University I always have to spill a little of my ale for the homies that didnt make it. And George was one hell of a DC homie.

Lets get back to those stories of DC 1980s bars.

Hi - found this while searching for something 'totally' unrelated...

There was a bar on Prospect St., to the right (on Prospect) if you're headed from Wisconsin Ave, then to the right, up the stairs - had softcover books on the shelves, kinda a dive I suppose in a way, but also had some string quartets on Sundays, stuff like that.. used to hang out there to mellow out late-night.

Also had pretty good food, but that's not what I'm looking for right now.

I believe the bar that had their front on Wisconsin was either Champions or The Tombs at the time.

It was right down the street around the corner off of Wisconsin from a place called Paulo's or such - it's been a really, really long time but ya' know how memory lane goes.. we used to do late night every night because I was lucky enough to 'know' some people. I'm just lookin' to see if anyone remembers these places. I shouldn't mention pied de cochon either, but I seem to remember this place (though when I google it i only find NYC or such..)

FYI this is circa 1985 so Abbey Rd, Bojangles, the Fishmarket, Rumours, 930, etc were all in good form! (of course the main venues were still RFK, Cap Center, Merriweather too.

Sorry to babble, thanks. PS: this was definitely a wild trip down memory lane so I registered & bookmarked this for posterity (myself really!)

yeah, i stopped using CAPS, but i still hope to read a reply soon! later.

Belvoir and went to those two a lot. I also would stay at the Key Bridge Marriot for the weekend and hit all the clubs on M st in Georgetown. Great thread, brings back a lot of ancient, but great memories.

I remember going to the Crazy Horse Cafe in 1970 with a group of friends from GW to see Neil Young solo. We got in early and had a front row table next to the small stage. He wore a white buckskin jacket and played on a white piano with an array of guitars nearby. He played all the current greats and then tookd requests. I remember asking for Southern Man and Cowgirl in the Sand and he played them both for us. It was an awesone night. Hello to Elliott and Ira and anyone else there with us that night

Holy freaking cow...reading these posts is an amazing walk down Memory Lane.

The Crazy Horse on M Street was my last stop one memorable night before me and a buddy wound up in the drunk tank.

Someone mentioned the Poor House Pub way up Wisconsin. Used to hang out there quite a bit.

Anyone remember a rock & roll joint called The Branding Iron? It was a big hangout for the Ft. Meyer military crowd. I'm pretty sure it was on Washington in Arlington in a building that now has "Eat Bar" in it (found it on Google Earth).

Would also frequent a place on the Southwest waterfront called The Barley Mow. A rather sedate place with a piano bar, but close to Ft. McNair.

Also remember Eskimo Nell's, I think in Arlington. Saw Jerry Jeff Walker there. He actually talked to people in the bar area before the show.

Great posts here.

A lot of post so far have, talked of other places, like the crazy horse, and my last spot was the bar under the crazy horse, "beneath it all" , had the slide next to the steps,I DJ on the floor and then got a old VW bus cut it up in the alley in the rear, brought it inside turned it to a DJ booth, When the owners bought Ceasers in Lanham, Md and turned it into The Big Apple, I installed the Saturday Night Fever dance floor and light system, then DJ untill late 1970, when thank god the Wall street Journal drove a stake into the heart of DISCO

The Dome was the bomb back then. When all the other places were playing college music this was the first to play hip hop and r&b! Good times!!!

Was it the Tombs that had a tunnel or slide that went from the street to the bar entrance? It ran parallel to the stairs. The Tombs website doesn't mention it. If it wasn't the Tombs, does any one remember? This would be late 70's - early 80's.

Was there a bar called "The Speakeasy" in DC in the early 70's? I think it played country music there?

It wasn't the Tombs; it was some bar right on M Street. Don't recall the name; they'd get cranky if someone tried to enter via the stairs down instead of using the slide.

In the late 60s, after leaving the Hayloft one night I walled up the hill to the Cellar Door. Back then it was a coffee house as I recall, I sat ordered, and guess who was playing? Simon and Garfunkle nobodies then. What great music that was, and it beat the folk music fromthe early years for sure! Later my sister, early 70s working for American Airlines, met Garfunkle on a flight.
Those were great days, eh?

Love me some David Allen Coe. Even though he looks like Merle Haggard, and sounds alot like David Allen Coe.

When did you meet him? What was he like? Any crazy stories, etc?

Thanks.

Danny was just fucking incredible. No other way to say it.

In addition to the usual bigger spots, early 70s we used to go to a dive that was upstairs from a cheesy strip joint called the Firehouse that was down the street from the Brickskeller where he'd play sometimes. Never anybody in there much other than a few of us. He'd be playing some of the best guitar that's ever been played on this planet for a crowd of 10 half drunk kids.

Can't even begin to do it justice here. Unfortunately, most will never hear a guitar played like that.

Tammany Hall and Rosalita at midnight! The floor would be bouncing with everyone jumping up and down. Cellar Door, Rumors, Winstons, Tombs, Sign of the Whale, OMG how I miss those times of never ever getting carded. Of course drinking age was 18 (as it SHOULD be).

Between 1976 and 1981, The National Alliance of Business'(17th and "M") "Jobs for Veterans" Program's 50 national-wide Managers met twice a year in D.C. to compare notes on what was working to get Vietnam Veterans employed, throughout the country and what other programs we could interface with toward that goal. At the end of each session, the 50 or so managers descended upon "Flaps Rickenbacker's", as we found it to be one of the most fun Bar and Grilles in D.C. I still have my "Flaps" commemorative 'T-Shirt' from that fun location. I was sorry to see that it closed, as it's WW I Aviation atmosphere (I had been in Army Aviation in Vietnam) was so cool.

What about My Mothers Place across from the Montage. We'd skip from one club to the other and if nothing was going on at either one, we'd head for the ACT IV on Wisconsin Avenue to see the Cherry People.

Wow! That was cool.... I was inside the cellar Door watching The NightHawks, and The Destroyers were playing Desperados that night.
I wish I could have seen the Jam and exchange of wireless pickups in the middle of M street, but we didn't really know what was happenin till George Thorogood walked in playing with the Nighhawks, He walked around the whole club even upstairs playing, walked out, made another exchange of pickups, and Jimmiy Thackery walked back in, still playing...... I wonder If both clubs were playing the same song ? or what.... That was cool.
So Carol< Did you see Both Guys in the street BOTH Times?

I went to NUMBERS almost every week.. Music was great, girls were nice, etc. i wonder if there is here a DJ that worked there in this blog... Would love to get a good mix of music played there on weekends...

There was also a character there every single weekend, some dude always dressed in all lkack, that thought he was James Bond or something, always hustling the girls and picking fights... What a loser...

Wow.. this is a cool thread!

We used to hit the Bayou, regularly. There was farther in town that had just an awning / doors at the street level. Walk down the stairs and there were two (or three?) bars with a dance floor and some tables in the center. Don't recall seeing any live music there but the DJ spun records from inside the cab of an old truck near the dance floor. May have been Bojangles.

We used to go down to Georgetown on Halloween every year, too. It was a blast.

Hey Andy, my name is Phil, I use to come in the library all the time because I was doing protection for one of the middle eastern guys who's brother's name was Mohammed. I know you will remember him because he would throw his American Express on the counter and would spend ungodly amounts of money til close. Do you remember him? That's was fun until he go arrested for drug dealing, 4 keys of coke to be exact! Question, whatever happened to Nancy's fine ass, I warned her every since the first day I saw her but could not close that deal. Feel free to hit me back!
Awesome memories bro!
