Actually, that place closed down about a year ago. It has turned into a real estate office. During the past few years, the BBQ place kind of maintained its own hours - so, trying to stop by and get some BBQ was either hit or miss. I did try it - just once and only once. We purchased a rack of baby-back ribs and some other items. We had our choice of sauce for the ribs - Texas style or N.C. style. When we got all the food home, we realized that when they cooked and smoked the ribs they did it without any rub or sauce. So, we essentially had a dry slab of flavorless ribs, with the exception of a small bit of smoke flavor. I wasn't impressed.

If you're going to offer both types of sauces, then why not cook some with each type of sauce, then let the customer choose? I'm sure that was part of their downfall - changing the way things operated by cooking generic ribs and then hoping the addition of the sauce would perform some kind of miracle in the end.

That's too bad. It has been a few years since I last ate there. I remember when it first opened, the NC style was just great, the "burn" of the venigar lingered after every bite. But, I suppose after who knows how many ownership changes it was hard to maintain quality.

Actually, I believe it was owned by the same guy all along. He just had different people who would work there and had their own way of doing the process. If someone's making $8.00 or so an hour, their heart really isn't in it as they're just focusing on getting their pay check. Also, there was a period for a bit over a year where the place turned into a pizza joint. I think someone leased the location from the owner and tried to make a go of it. The pizza was a bit odd - I forget what they called it - rectangular with a different type of sauce. The lady that owned it told me it was more of a Northwestern Pennsylvania style of pizza - ??. Anyway, we tried it - once. However, that place never drew many clients.

I live just a few miles from that old BBQ place, so after driving by it 3-4 times a week, it's pretty easy to see what's current. However, now in the Dominion Valley market place shopping center, there is a Tony's NY pizza - from the same group as the Tony's in the Fair Lakes, Manassas and Ciro's in Centreville. Good pizza comes from that place.

Now, if I want BBQ, I'll just make it at home.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but there really is no such thing as "Carolina Barbecue". There's Eastern Carolina Barbecue, and Western Carolina Barbecue. The differences are obvious and at the heart of Carolina culture. Eastern is whole hog, smoked over (usually) oak, and slathered in vinegar and black pepper sauce. Any sauce you put on it is vinegar based. Western Carolina is pork shoulder, sweeter, smoked over (usually) hickory, with a sugar and ketchup sauce.

Preference divides at the "Gnat Line", where the sandy soil of coastal Carolina meets the clay soil of piedmont Carolina.

I can't say about Nova, but the best Barbecue period can be found at Moore's Barbecue just outside New Bern NC on Highway 17. The pork is incredible, and the sides are authentic: slaw and hush puppies (and fries for the Yankees). It's the kind of place where if you order "unsweetened" iced tea, the lady at the counter will say with genuine concern, "oh Hon, you got the Diabetes?" and every order is served with a side of Scripture.

Partime,

Ya, I know there are two different types from North Carolina, but I only consider the vinigar style to be the best one. I also enjoy the mustard style sauce as well.

I once was in Goldsboro and we stopped at a bbq place, it was great, a plater was about 4.00 and included all the tea and hush puppies we could stand. Yummy.

Of course with some, the difference is BBQ is the meat - pig versus cow.

Arlingtonkid: That place you are talking about was Reedy's, which is mentioned earlier as closing down. Best in the area: Willards and Dixie Bones. Whole Foods does some pretty good BBQ, but is expensive. Best ribs not in the area, but worth the drive...Buz and Ned's in Richmond. Dale's in Indian Head is very good, very homestyle and George's was outstanding for ribs, but they had a fire and I am not sure if they reopened yet. They were located about 200 yards from Dale's in Indian Head.

Oh man oh man -- Northern Virginia/D.C. Metro just doesn't have a great BBQ place. You have to drive along I-64 approaching Williamsburg and get off at the Lightfoot exit. Follow the signs to Pierces Pitt BBQ. Best BBQ east of the Mississippi!

Pierce's? Ugh, not thank you. There is something in the sauce that turns my stomach, cinnamon? I don't know, but I do not like it. If I am going to drive that far, I will go to Buz and Ned's for some ribs. Their sides are too expsensive and too small, but their ribs are the best between Fairfax and NC.

BBQ is so subjective you can't just throw out a random thought like "where is the best BBQ?". For the NoVa area, I like Willards (thought their sweet tea is always oversteeped) and the ribs at Whole Foods, Fair Lakes. Bubba's in FC is horrible as is Capital Q in DC.

it's too bad Reedy's closed down, do they have a new location yet?

The best BBQ I've had is at JJ Deli in the Herndon golf course. It is a public deli so you don't have to swing a club to eat there. They also have a catering service. They have the best brisket.

That is awesome news! It was popular belief that Ben's had the best BBQ in the DC area until Ben sold the business about 10 years ago. Mark, Any idea where in MP will the new Ben's be located?

So this place isn't exactly NoVa, but it's not too far off: Texas Ribs and BBQ in Clifton. The place isn't much to look at but it was the best BBQ I've had in this area, and we've eaten at quite a few places...only problem is I just ate there once, and you know how sometimes it's the second time you eat somewhere that you realize it sucks. Good ribs, chicken, brisket, hot sauce, cornbread, you name it. Also their own root beer brew that's pretty good.

Ben's BBQ was gross...at least when Ben was the owner.
I dropped a dinner roll once at their buffet, went to pick it up and there was a shitload of rat poop underneath the thing. Never went back there after that. I knew one of the waitresses there too...she told me that place was disgusting and that none of the cooks washed their hands. So, I guess we should be happy that rat infested restaurant is back.

The best in baby backs in NOVA is at Silverado. Yep, it's part of the Great American Reataurant chain. But it's got better flavor than anywhere else up here.

I think Rocklands has the best pulled pork in NOVA. Good flavor.

The best BBQ in Virginia is Saucy's Walkup in Petersburg. It's a shack off the interstate in an industrial area of the town. Definitely worth a stop if you head south from Richmond.

2nd best is Pierce's in Williamsburg. Used to be the best, but the quality has gone downhill a little as they've grown. But if you go by in the winter when they aren't as busy the quality seems to be like the old times. Just in summer when the beach traffic is steady they suffer a bit.

Pierces? Horrible no matter when you go....horrible.

Best in this area? Carolina Brothers.

It ain't exactly NoVa but "High on the Hog" in Sperryville, VA has the absolute best BBQ I have had anywhere.

Their Bitchin Pork Sandwich is beyond comparison to anything at any BBQ joint in the country.

Got to Warrenton and take 211 west for 25 miles. Left into Sperryville, hang a right at the stop sign, and go 1/8 of a mile to High on the Hog on the right.

It's the Inn at Little washington of BBQ Joints. Owner JD is from Old Town. He knows his BBQ.

I tried them all in NoVa. While there is good BBQ there is no great BBQ in our area. You have to travel to Williamsburg/Lightfoot off of Interstate-64 and dine on the best BBQ east of the Missippi at Pierce's Pitt. There is no comparison -- it is incredible.

This place is stand alone and located on a back road with no commercial establishments nearby. Even though it is hard to find it is packed with customers! Trust me -- go here next time you are travelling on I-64.

Are there any restaurants in the District that sell South Carolina-style barbecue?

Yes, a few establishments in and around the District offer mustard-based barbecue sauce, a condiment from and of South Carolina that doesn’t get a lot of love outside the Palmetto State. South Carolinians can satisfy their cravings for mustard sauce at Branded 72 in Rockville, Pork Barrel in Alexandria, and Old Glory in Georgetown, though management at all three establishments say the yellow sauce is greatly outsold by tomato-based sauces.

The rarity and relative unpopularity of mustard-based barbecue sauce stems from its roots. Lake High, the president of the South Carolina Barbeque Association, credits a curious population strategy of South Carolina’s colonial government: In the 1730s, mustard-loving Palatinate Germans living in England were recruited to farmland in South Carolina, where Native Americans had been skirmishing with colonists. German mustard fused with barbecue, a smoky, low-heat cooking technique introduced to European settlers by American Indians, to produce the sauce associated with South Carolina barbecue.

The yellow sauce has been slow to spread outside of the state, thanks to the highly regional nature of barbecue and the dominance of tomato-based sauces in the national imagination. (Kraft and other manufacturers mostly peddle tomato-based sauce, the style favored in Texas, Memphis, and Kansas City barbecue.) “Barbecue falls into that fun category of ‘our football team can beat yours’ and ‘our girls are prettier than your girls,’” High explains. Despite increasing visibility through TV food shows (Alton Brown likes to use mustard sauce), the South Carolina condiment tends to be passed over for what folks know. That’s partly why Pork Barrel’s mustard sauce ranks third out of four in popularity, and Branded 72’s “south cackalacky” sauce is made in five-gallon batches rather than 80-gallon ones like their other four sauces.

Southerners have long suffered in the District for lack of decent barbecue, High says, but South Carolinians had it particularly bad. No mustard sauce to speak of was served in D.C. during High’s years as a congressional staffer in the late 1960s. “It was desperate,” says High, who would trek deep into Arlington to the region’s closest facsimile of a barbecue joint and find “three or four South Carolinians sitting there, desperate.”

Perhaps the only D.C. transplants who have suffered more than South Carolinians are Alabamians, who are unlikely to find their state’s mayonnaise-based white sauce just about anywhere.

You have to try the Pit stop BBQ on Rt 50 where it intersects with 15 at Gilbert's Corner. They are there every Saturday and Sunday. Best BBQ around.

Farmers market in The Plains on sundays - Magic Mike's. No, not that magic Mike. Best ribs and pulled pork north of the NC border.

I vote for Famous Dave's barbecue. Their brisket is so tender and yummy. Had the same thing at Red, Hot and Blue and it was no good. Although they do have great potato salad everything else is mediocre.

If I want pulled pork, I smoke a Boston butt in my driveway all day. If I want SC BBQ, I use either the Charleston BBQ Company or Prosser's BBQ sauce (vinegar/red pepper based). If I want something more run of the mill for sauce, I will either use Sticky Finger's Memphis Sweet or Sweet Baby Ray's. Harris Teeter is always running sales on the Sticky Fingers BBQ sauce which is from the Charleston area as well.

Ben from Ben's Whole Hog and what ever it is now learned how to do whole pig down in teh Myrtle Beach area. Pretty much like my uncle does them, though he has a more sophistcated set-up.

Dickeys BBQ on 29 in front of the Fairfax City Walmart is pretty awesome. They never have anything in stock, but when they do, it's good.

By far the best BBQ I’ve ever been to in VA. He just started doing smoked chicken salad. WOW, it’s out of this world amazing. The ribs, the chicken, pretty much everything he has is good. If your ever on rt50 on the weekend, passing by Rt15 (Gilberts Corner). You must stop. Everyone goes to this guy, he is amazing.

The Rib Rack closed 15+ years ago. I miss those onion ring loafs.

Tried the beef ribs at Rocklands the other day. Super-fatty (to be fair, they did warn me, but I've never seen ribs that fatty--of a full $35 order, two of the four ribs were more than 50% fat!), little flavor. The coleslaw was weird, as was the potato salad, and the corn pudding was just mush, almost tasteless. I was sad, was really looking forward to some good q!

If you're ever in Rochester, NY, Dinosaur BBQ has awesome ribs, and their brisket is out of this world.

Acourse (as they say) de gustibus non disputandum, so you may disagree with everything I've written.

Dickies in Fairfax City is excellent! Had the beef brisquit with mac and cheese and French fries. Their sauce is great and the portions are filling. Great local place. Better than Rocklands or any other chain.

Avoid Liberty BBQ in Falls Church. Famous Dave's was better.

Even though they are chains, Famous Dave's and Dickey's BBQ Pit are great. Willard's is good if you and your family are all glum cunts.
