I'm a mile from the base in southern Fauquier County. My family has had our farm here since 1950 and the intensity of the shock waves from explosions in Quantico on March 10 and April 15 was like nothing we have ever experienced. I called the base for the first time ever (I'm 66 and familiar with the typical Quantico noise, no problem, but this was unbelievable.)
Base said locations of bombing ranges has not changed, but "our ordinance has improved." Not from where I stand. They also attempted to school me on the need for a strong national defence and fed me that baloney about "the sound of freedom." Those community affairs people have a thankless job, but that line is right up there with the satirical movie line "I love the smell of napalm." OUT OF TOUCH!! I got a kick out of their web info that says if you check our noise advisories you will know when not to put the kids down for a nap or when it's time to take the pets to doggy day care. Quantico must realize it's a big country and setting off ever larger bombs between Prince William and Stafford counties (2 of the fastest growing in the country) is a loosing proposition and it's not doing the corps any good. It's time to move the big stuff where it can better be accommodated -- half of the West is still empty. They have the locations and resources to do this. It's only a matter of time. The base is a priceless resource for national defence, homeland security and law enforcement. Too valuable to blast holes in and destroy the neighbor's quality of life. As it stands the myopic people running the show at MCB Quantico are burning the fuse at both ends and it will blow-up in their face. I always thought the sound of freedom is the Marine Band, I might switch.
