Blasting Noise from Quantico?
Posted by: Seeker ()
Date: February 03, 2011 11:18AM

Is anyone else in the Burke/Fairfax Station area feeling the vibration and noise from explosions (ordnance training?) at Quantico? This went on most of the day yesterday and seems to be going on again today. Most of them are just a rumble which causes the windows to rattle, but every once in a while there is a round which makes my house shake. Pretty amazing considering that I live 20 miles away...I cannot imagine what this feels like in Dale City or Dumfries.

Why would they be testing an ordinance? Wouldn't a legislative body or law enforcement agency be responsible for ordinance testing?

Or do you mean "ordnance" testing? That would make more sense.

I was in southern Taiwan once when one of their "trainer" jets (F5) was doing multiple runs on SOMETHING - not sure what but it just looked like someone's house in the middle of some fields/paddies - over and over again make a low bombing/strafing approach, then zoom back up on full afterburner, go around, repeat. Near the same spot there were some artillery set up shooting at a mountain - kaboom...pause...pause...pause...distant boom.

Interesting but I bet the "locals" weren't real fond of the noise.

I have been hearing the blasts for a few days. Went on till about 8:00pm last night. I live right accross from Burk Lake, in Fairfax Staion, Va. The blast have been shaking my windows all day today. Is there a sure answer to the ground shaking and also shaking my windows?

When I was young I could remember the battleships doing live fire exercises off the coast. Unmistakeable rumble. That was also in the day when Air Force and Navy jets could fly Mach 1+ and get away with it.

How large is the range at Quantico? I thought that some of the larger mortars can travel a couple of miles, but a howitzer is going to need more than that.

We're at 123 & Silverbrook. Been hearing/feeling a sort of soft boom for the last few days. It must be awful for anyone close to Quantico...I think we're probably 20 miles away. Back before they shut down the Lorton firing range, we used to wake to gunfire in the morning. Things got awful quiet after they shot up that townhouse!

This has been going on for some time - back in October and November, I heard loud booms and felt the shaking, and back then we thought it was from the quarry in Lorton. Maybe it's all been from Quantico.

Lorton:
There used to be a DC police firing range out here. Back in 1999, some bullets went seriously astray. The range was closed soon after. I believe the range was near the site where Laurel Hill Elementary now sits, but I'm not sure about that. Here's MPD's statement about the incident:

http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx/agency/mpdc/section/2/release/1221/year/1999/month/5

Boulders,
I too thought it was the quarry, but I don't recall hearing that in years, so it would surprise me for them to start up now. Just seems odd that we can hear Quantico from here. No windows rattling, just a lot of soft "booms."

Since it's artillery training they're either shooting M198 or M777 howitzers. Either way they both shoot 155mm rounds. Pull string go boom.

The effective range (according to Wikipedia) varies from 15-25 miles based on the type of ammunition. Is the Quantico base really that large? It hardly seems so looking at a map, so I am wondering where the shells are landing.

Lots and lots of variables in gunnery.

I can not remember the roads name but it seems you can cut thru to route one from route 234. All along this road were signs that it was restricted land. It was a strange road. When we reached route one from Manassas we were at the road to the military base. It may be closed now.

Yeah, the US Gov will up and move a Marine Corps Base just because a bunch of whining little bitches didn't do any research about the area they moved to.

And Quantico was still there before the FBI established their presence there, so they knew what they were getting into.

Quantico posts schedules for ordnance training and last week had a heavy schedule. Nothing was posted for this week but I'm sitting here feeling my house shake in Lake Ridge. I am used to this but it is particularly bad today. Is taking me back to the days I lived in base housing in Virginia Beach and we, the Navy, train - firing onto the range (restricted beach area) nearby. My whole house would shake and things fall off shelves and pictures off walls. Quantico was here first but lots more activity has been consolidated to Quantico and Fort Belvoir due to base closures elsewhere which seems to coincide with a dramatic increase of testing at Quantico. And the blasts are much louder and with heavier vibrations than in the past. Maybe that is due to newer, better, louder ordnance or I'm just lucky and the wind always blowing this way on ordnance testing days. I love my freedom so I can live with it as long as it doesn't shake my house off its foundation. Other than that, I'm just happy we have such well-trained and devoted troops with such big toys - they keep America free and I love 'em!

unless you bought your house prior to WWI, you are a complete dumbass for moving to this area and not realizing that Quantico MCB is a combat training command where things go boom.

Today between 1:45-2:15 me my brother in law and my son felt 2 booms that rattled my home and you could feel it.
Most days it's just quiet enough that you could miss it but you can feel it and house will slightly rattle, and you feel the slight thud of the boom.
I'm getting tired of my house being bombarded by this. Lots of cracking in my crown moulding and cracks in my ceiling drywall.

You're probably right in that reasoning. However, I would think that Lorton would be far enough away! At 2:05pm there was a boom that shook and rattled the windows. Wasn't sure what it was and now I'm guessing it was Quantico, but who knows.

We are having booms here too. We seem far enough away from Quantico. What could it be?

I've been hearing loud noises and feeling vibrations all week, especially when it's been overcast. Wednesday and today have been the worst.

From the Quantico website -

"Residents in the immediate vicinity of Marine Corps Base Quantico may experience an increase in noise as an affect from training or range clearance operations from Feb. 8 - Feb. 16.

Monday - Feb. 11. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Tuesday - Feb. 12. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday - Feb 13. Explosive Munitions Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday - Feb. 14. Explosive Munitions Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m Friday - Feb 15. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday - Feb. 16. Range Clearance Operations are scheduled from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

In addition, the I-95 expansion project will be conducting pile driving operations Monday through Saturday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the month of February.

** Please Note: Effects of training vary depending on weather conditions. Overcast conditions may increase noise and vibrations.
** All questions regarding this training should be directed to the Quantico Public Affairs Office at (703) 432-0305"

Lots of really loud booms now near Clifton. I don't know where they are coming from, but it sounds like the Fourth of July.

Well I talked to a marine enviromental lawyer a couple years ago and he said they will be bombing less frequently but the charges will be more intense. So get your meds ready and hunker down!!! They also finally started picking up spent munitions some of which were from wwII. A couple million pounds were picked up I just hope they don't dump them in the potomac.
