I don't like this potential new law. It's going to put a dent in our tint smuggling ring *Curses loudly and throws a hammer through a window*.

If this passes, what the hell are we supposed to talk about here on FU?

We'll be left with High School suicide/death threads, and people bitching about FCPS. Might as well shutter up the site, and move on to reading wikipedia at work. Last one out, leave some donuts for the cops!

Just made a thread for this so we don't have to jack this one. We can leave the legal shit here with us hoping it passes.

WHY, YOU MUST BE REFERENCING THE FILTHY "UN-TRACKABLE ILLEGAL MEXICAN

DEFRAUDING THE HARDWORKING TAX PAYERS OF THE UNITED STATES.

02/17/11 Senate: Passed by indefinitely in Transportation with letter (15-Y 0-N)

YEAS--Miller, Y.B., Houck, Marsh, Newman, Watkins, Puckett, Wagner, Blevins, Deeds, McDougle, Ticer, Smith, Miller, J.C., Marsden, McWaters--15.

NAYS--0.

ABSTENTIONS--0.

So since it was passed by the house and got passed by the senate, is it a law now? Are we down to 35% all around?!

No, it doesn't take effect immediately. And I believe the Governor needs to sign it. Probably July 1.

Hmm.. I read it as "passed".. I feel like they would have used a different word to say that it was killed.

Committee Actions

Continued/Carried over - Action taken in an even-numbered year to postpone the consideration of a measure until the next regular session of the General Assembly.
Failed to Report (Defeated) - The rejection of a motion to report a bill to the full chamber.
Incorporate - Action taken to combine one or more measures into another.
No Action Taken - No motion is made on the bill which results in its defeat at the time of the committee deadline.
Passed By Indefinitely (PBI) - Action to allow a committee to reconsider legislation at a later meeting. If the committee takes no further action, the bill is dead.
Passed by with letter - Action by which a committee requests a state agency or committee to study or provide additional information on a measure. The legislation is no longer viable in the current session but is often reintroduced at a subsequent session.
Referred - The assignment of legislation to another standing committee with no stance on the policy of the measure (neither endorses nor rejects the legislation).
Reported - The approval of a measure by the majority of the committee. The legislation may be reported by the committee with or without amendments. A bill may also be reported and referred to another committee.
Reported and Referred - The approval of a bill or resolution by a majority of a committee and assignment of the legislation to another standing committee for its consideration.
Stricken - Legislation removed from a committee's docket, frequently at the request of the patron.

Gun laws are not really "laws", it's a right that people have since the Bill of Rights were drafted. It gives the people the right to protect themselves. You can open carry a handgun in the Commonwealth without any permits.

Radar detectors allow people the opportunity to break the law and then react and slow down to prevent getting caught. Allowing these is the same as providing those an opportunity to speed with less risk of getting caught, which is now endangering lives.

Window tint, I have mixed views about. I understand the purpose is so law enforcement can see INTO the vehicle when approaching on a traffic stop. However, I think it's a bit ridiculous as it only applies to the front windows and the rear windows in vans and SUV's aren't applicable. So, what does it matter if you can see the driver, you still can't see any passengers.

Also, if it was really for officer safety - why is the window tint law different in so many other states? Are you telling me that they don't value the safety as much as we do? Makes no sense.

I agree the law should be overturned on tint, but - please don't try to say this is the same as radar detectors and the right to bear arms.

Never said it was the same just odd that Virginia can be very lax about some things and very strict about others.

FYI, they are not very lax on gun laws. They still get a shitload of "man with a gun" call and handle things incorrectly. A man with a gun means absolutely jack shit unless that individual is brandishing a fireman and/or committing a crime.

But, those citizens who carry still are still questioned and bothered.

I AGREE. THE LAW IS STUPID. ASK YOURSELF THIS QUESTION? IF DARK WINDOW TINT PUTS LAW ENFORCEMENT AT RISK, THEN WHY THE HELL ISN'T TINT A PART OF THE SAFETY INSPECTION? THE OPERATIVE WORD HERE IS SAFETY. VIRGINIA IS AN ANTIQUATED COMMONWEALTH THAT ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO DO THINGS FOR THE PURPOSE OF CREATING A REVENUE STREAM! VIRGINIA MAKES IT EASY TO GET "ILLEGAL" TINT, THEN JUST TICKETS THOSE THAT HAVE IT! ITS LIKE SHOOTING FISH IN A BARREL

THE LAST HOLD OUT ON THE RADAR DETECTORS TOO! LIKE SHOOTING FISH IN A BARREL....ITS OK FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT TO USE GADGETS TO CATCH US, BUT ITS NOT OK FOR US TO USE GADGETS TO EVADE THEM. HELLO ITS 2011!

Exactly... MWAG calls are way too common and most times, the responding officers themselves dont know the ins and outs of the VA laws...

IF you carry, you damn sure better know the ins and outs of the laws.

Passed By Indefinitely means the bill will not be considered on the Senate floor, and yes, it is dead for this session–
The committee chairman sent a letter to the Secretary of Public Safety and the State Police asking for more clarification as to the impact of the legislation–
The window tint bill originated in the house and passed– went to the Senate and was killed (for this session).

SanDiego,

The law forbids the tint shop to put tint that is too dark on a vehicle. It's just too difficult to track down the installer. I have seen installers get in trouble though.
