Received a quote from Growing Earth Tree Care from Ashburn Virginia for tree removal due to the last snow storm and it was OUTRAGEOUS!!!!! Nothing like trying to stick it to people right after a storm!! I won't use them now or in the spring when it is not an emergency and I just want some trees removed!! Their price really made me mad!!

What is the scope of the job; How big are the tree(s) and how many of them are there? Let us decide wht is reasonable.

Tree removal is expensive anytime. Just because now you need it and you found it is expensive doesn't mean you are getting ripped off. And yeah maybe with the demand going up they need to raise prices to control the schedule. Either wait or remove it yourself if you can do it cheaper.

My father was telling me about his experience to get a fallen tree removed last week. He got an initial quote of $1,250, so he laughed in their face. He then offered them $500. The company refused to budge, so my dad walked back into the house. About 5 min later, one of the tree guys came to the door an offered $650. He said one of the workers was mad. The entire time the tree was being removed, that idiot sat in the truck.....

BE AWARE OF PRICE GOUGING! IT'S A SERIOUS PROBLEM.

Perhaps if you maintained your trees, removing the dead, leaners, and weak ones as they ocurred, you would not be faced with this. Those folks are working 24X7 right now in snow and ice, but they'll be scrounging for work in the nice weather when cheap folks like you won't shell out to properly maintain their yards. So it all comes around eventually.

Dear Calm Down.....

My home is on a large lot of land with lots of trees. For the last 15 years I have had trees removed almost of a yearly basis due to storm reasons and/or to clear the land. I am well aware of the cost of removing trees and I know when prices given to me are outrageous. The price I received from this company was OUTRAGEOUS! I posted this forum so others could post their experiences with tree companies.

The Culpepper Cartel was trolling the neighborhood and wanted to charge me $550 to cut down two upper branches that had cracked in the storm. They justified it by saying they'd take both entire limbs off. No thank you.

Spend 300-500 on a good chain saw. Know how to use it. When trees come down, you can do the basics of getting things off the driveway, etc and then get the tree guys out for the heavy work after the storm rush is over.

[sigh] then please tell us what the outrageous price was and what your expected cost of removal was given your experience.

I have a tree'd lot, and do a lot of the smaller work on trees myself. When it comes to going up a tree, I get the professionals to do that - too dangerous.

You cannot compare the price you get when you are cleaning up around the yard in May/June to the work after a storm. They charge a premium for a reason. I had some Bradford pears split in last years storm. Try going out in knee deep snow and cutting up even a fallen tree - it's hard as hell. It's going to take them 50%+ longer to work in heavy snow and ice. They have every reason to charge more.

Go troll somewhere else, jackass. LOTS, in fact, most of the trees that had broken limbs, etc. due to the snow were perfectly healthy before the break.

Econ 101, supply and demand. This is the same reason why parents paid $1500 for a PS3 when it was in short supply on Christmas few years back

For $600 I'll come over and cut up your tree as long as I can use the wood for myself.

Just kidding. No I won't.

Any time I have had tree work done, I get a price, and then offer them half. If they want the work, they'll do it. Most of the time, the $1,500 bucks that I was quoted came down to $700 or $800. Just don't be a dick when haggling and you can shave the price nearly in half.

When you contract a company to do tree work make sure they are licensed and insured.

The fines and the repair costs to fix damaged utilities caused by some idiot with a chainsaw can easily run into 6 figures.

Saw a guy with a ancient backhoe trying to pull a stump. Before he was finished he damaged a water main, and a gas main. The tree guy fucked everything up and took off - Leaving the homeowner on the hook for all of the repairs and fines.

Get multiple estimates before hiring someone - I have found that the prices vary a lot for the same job with these guys.

Tree work has the highest workman comp rates over .50 on the dollar. It's also the most dangerous with the most serious injuries and deaths. As a contractor, we don't touch anything to do with trees. So why don't you grab a chainsaw and climb your fat ass up there and take the risk and then tell us who's gouging who. He should have left.

I'll tell you what a OUTRAGEOUS rate is. I have a monstrous tree and I was quoted $3,000 to have it removed. I have a very large pine that was quoted at $1,800.

For 1 day of work for about 3 guys (1 skilled and 2 unskilled guys). This is just over the top.

Recently had a 60' Douglas Fir removed from the front yard. The job involved one climber, two laborers, a chipper truck and they hauled away what was left. The dude even swept the driveway clean. The bill was $400 bucks. Tree companies in Northern Virginia know good anal sex when they encounter it.

Acme Tree quoted me 14k to cut down and remove the three 75 foot Juniper's in my back yard. I said Fuck You... Later I drank a bunch of Jack Daniel's and cut the bitches down with my electric chainsaw, an axe and some rope. Afterward, I had some Mexican's pick up the wood and do the clean up for free (well almost free, I did treat them to some delicious Arthur Treacher's fish and chip's). Not including my time and labor, I estimate I saved around $13,700....
