There's a new way to keep an eye on crime in Fairfax County.

It's a computer program through the county's 'My Neighborhood' system that's been up and running for years.

Wow, if that isn't one of the most unfriendly search & display applications I have ever used. Wow.

I mean you can only search for a month.

You can't search by map area.

You have to pick an address & a radius.

I mean it is cool that FFX county is making the data available, but it sure is ugly. For goodness sake, try a google mash up or something.

There are many of you out there who know a lot about technology and how to make the site more user friendly. Why don't some of you try to contact them using the CONTACT US field on the page and offer your suggestions and how to's?

You are all smart, knowledgable, and concerned so why not share and help your community at the same time!

I will give you the benefit of the doubt that your suggestion was sincere and not snarky. While your suggestion makes perfect sense in a rationale world, that type of thinking is not what makes our government work so well. A Google mash up or other low-cost application of technology would add a lot of value, but there is little incentive to think that way.

The reason being, is that it looks like the same interface they are using on the Fairfax DTA Real Estate property site that is directly tied to their GIS system.

Meaning that in order to affect any real change, they would most likely have to get several organizations together to agree to that one solution. Instead of an old, outdated, (easy for the gov't to use), shoe horned onto the public web interface that we have now.

I've actually found quite a few people in the FFX county government to be very helpful (even a couple just today). So yeah, I could do that.

But then I click on "Contact Us" and it asks me for an agency. So which agency owns that map? Police? Who really knows. Too bad the contact us on the bottom of the page doesn't go directly to the owner of the page you are on.

Whoa
