It's been 5 years since the Sniper Shootings started.

Post your stories and what you did here.

I can remember only being very watch-ful when filling up my truck at the gas station since they seemed to focus on them.

How about you? Did it change your schedule, habits, etc.

Glad VA has the Death Penalty.

getting from the actual Hayfield building to the student parking involved alot of zig-zag running..

and i loved how that football (?) game was moved to a "safer" location... then somebody got shot there..

What was unnerving was stopping for gas on Rt. 29 in Opal - across the highway from Clark Bros. gun store and shooting range. BANG - ducks head.....

ferfux, if you remember, they kept saying on the News that there was a white van in the area at the time. Like there aren't a gazillion white vans around anyway.

No one really knew what to look for. I remember being surprised when they finally caught them, and it was a Crown Vic or something, with a hole in the back of the truck lid.

Some "White Van", NOT!

I'm sure if one of us gun owners saw it happen, the vehicle and all, we'd have called the Police, tailed the Snipers, and let the Poice know we were armed if needed to stop another shooting.

yeah but you didnt. none of you big talkers did a damn thing. All armed to the teeth from the gun show and just as impotent to stop the Snipers as CHief MOOSE

I remember ducking as I fueled my car.

I also remember realizing the limits of law enforcement....dozens of police agencies and thousands of officers/agents involved. I remember sitting on I-95 for HOURS because the po-po shut it down to chase some lead.

In the end, the case was solved the way most are...a former neighbor of Muhammad dropped a dime and said, "Hey, that sounds like a guy I know!".

And then didn't a trucker find the actual car and suspects???

I wonder if those two private citizens ever collected the reward? I wouldn't bet on it....Jerry's Kids probably got it? LOL

At least WE could have stopped another shooting if we weren't all looking at every damn white van that drove by, or had we seen a shooting happen.

Once the "real" lookout was given, a trucker spotted the vehicle at a rest area off of I-270 or I-70 and called 9-1-1. Maryland State Police SWAT along with federal resources surrounded the car and took them into custody without incident.

Yeah, I did that too, ducking, always looking around. It was scary.

And like Schrute said above, it was a trucker that finally rported them.

I just was wondering what people went through, other than me. How they felt, did they change their routine, how "safe" did you feel in the open???

i recall having bought gas at the manassass sunoco not 2 hours before somebody got shot there.

And then gas prices there were 75 cents less than everywhere else for the next 3 months

Whoa!!! That would have really freaked me out, being there just hours before.

Count your Blessings, just think if you were running late that day.

I remember people forwarding an e-mail with advices from a "former sniper" or smthg like that.

A few things I have to say.
First, I believe it was a late 80s Monte Carlo(the car choice of most killers), not a Crown Vic. And I remember those days more vividly than what I was doing on 9/11 it seems. I remember going to school, and everyone getting scared. I never felt in danger, but it was so sad to lose all the victims. Hey, I love sniping in videogames but I can't believe someone would just go around doing that for no purpose in the end. There was a big sigh of relief when they finally got them. Fucking worthless humans. We should all be thankful tonight when we go to sleep, any one of us could have hit the ground that terrible October.

I'm pretty sure it was an old Chevy Impala...mid to late 80's vintage.

I remember my daughter's kindergarten class trip to Cox Farm was canceled after they threatened to, and then did, shoot a school aged kid.

I remember my son's baseball practices and games getting cancelled because they were out in the open. Sucked. I also remember how everyone looked suspiciously at everyone around them, no one was friendly unless they already knew you.

I thought maybe somebody had built a gun into a car and they could aim it using some type of video camera. That was why they needed targets standing still to get the car into position to aim.

When they showed the car with the hole in the trunk it made complete sense. I was like, holy shit Batamn I was damn close.

I used to live within a mile of the Home Depot at 7 Corners where the one woman was shot. I remember the choppers flying overhead with spotlights drawn. FFX, FC, and Arl police were all driving in concentric circles through the neighborhoods looking for that damn white van. My next door neighbor at the time had a white van and the helos put the spotlight on it a dozen times and the cars stopped a few times to check it out, even getting out one time to talk to my neighbor. I wonder how many times they did this, seeing as there are a tone of white vans.

That chinese place right by the home depot in 7 corners has crazy good dim sum. Shark fin dumplings and pork buns...I was at college thinking "thank god I am not in NOVA right now" and then bam! My favorite chinese meal place was all over national tv. Yum Yum Dim Sum. BTW "My favorite chinese meal place" is an excellent name for a chinese food resteraunt.

I was going to a friends to 'chill' the night of the home depot shooting. i got 1 mile from my house and then the shooting happened and i couldnt go anywhere but back home.. helicopters all over the place and every road blocked getting checked.

Well Sir, as a gun owner, I was holed up in my house protecting my family and
glued to a police scanner during most of my waking hours. Unfortunately, we didnt
have open carry then. Not that it would have been an advantage anyway. The term
"sniper" was coined in this situation by the Liberal, non-shooting, non-veteran
Media. They were not accurately defined "snipers", but merely Ambushers hiding
in a car. I recall that it was a truck driver who eventually found them at a rest
stop. Also recall reports that said the trucker was a card-carring NRA member too.

Anyone who uses a scope or a military-like gun is a sniper according to the un-informed media. I belive these guys were using a bushmaster .223 commando which is basically a copy of the colt commando (M4/CAR-15).

According to the media, a pistol with a scope on it is a "sniper rifle."

The Lib media will call a muzzle-loader a machine gun. Ive seen the (Com)Post
refer to just about everything as an "assault weapon". I really get a charge
when they want to ban rifles with bayonet lugs. Like we've had a rash of
bayonet assaults?

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sniper as:

1 : to shoot at exposed individuals from a usually concealed point of vantage


Sounds pretty close to me.

Anyone remember that gas station on 236 & Prosperity that had a Big Blue tarp up so that no one could see you pump gas?

I also remember people thinking that after a shooting was the best time to get gas because the sniper location could be sort of identified.

I remember no one being outside and feeling really creeped out when I was walking my dogs and I was the only one on the street!

My folks were at the Home Depot less than an hour before the woman was killed at 7 Corners.

In the real world (military and police) a "sniper" is one who is trained to
shoot at targets that are at extremely long ranges. I guess this is a grey
area, but it was later found out that the "Beltway Snipers" were shooting
at much closer ranges than thought. I'm sure that if you could ask Carlos
Hathcock if they were "snipers" in the true sense, he would disagree with
Miriam-Webster. Any GI can set up an ambush, but a sniper requires a lot
of very rigorous and specialized training. Some are now effective at ranges of over one mile with the .50 cal Barrett.
