But seriously, here is the story.....

Two-Alarm Pohick House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a house fire Tuesday, September 25, 2007, at approximately 4 p.m. in the Pohick area of Fairfax County. The single-family home is located at 8104 Oak Hollow Court.

Firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from all four sides of the eaves of the two-story home upon arrival. Firefighters experienced heavy fire in the attic and roof of the home. A second alarm was subsequently struck, bringing over 60 firefighters to the scene. It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. Two adults and two children have been displaced. The occupants were home when the fire broke out and escaped unharmed. There were no injuries. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Damage is estimated at $555,000. Additionally, there was minor siding damage to an adjacent home.

According to fire investigators, the fire was accidental. Insulation in the attic was too close to the recessed lighting in a second floor bathroom.

Similar info from Deputy Chief Baker...w/some more details

Earlier this evening fire department units were dispatched to a Two-Alarm house fire in the Pohick area. Units arrived to discover smoke coming from the eaves on all four sides of the two-story single family dwelling at 8104 Oak Hollow Ct. Units discovered fire in the attic and within minutes fire emitting from the roof. Firefighters took two handlines inside and used a master stream device to extinguish the fire in 45 minutes. Approximately 60 firefighters were onscene. No firefighter injuries. Four occupants were displaced and assisted by Red Cross with no injuries. Occupants were home at the time of the fire. The cause was accidental and determined to be attic insulation coming into contact with second floor bathroom recessed lighting. Siding from an adjacent home was damaged slightly also.

Thanks for the info - I guess one ight ask, how would insulation in an existing house come into contact with lighting?

I guess anything can happen! Scary.

ceiling mounted (inside) lights I would assume... insulation being in the ceiling.

Our world famous FD isn't known for being aggressive on the fire ground.

I wonder if Harry Homeowner just added the recessed lighting? Because there are different types of recessed cans....one is designed to come into direct contact with insulation (IC rating) and the other isn't (non-IC) and the insulation should be at least 3 inches away.

Plus, overlamping a recessed lighting fixture can lead to a fire...although most supposedly have an integral thermal protector.

The picture is not of the house that caught fire as the address on the mailbox does not match the address. Also, the house that caught fire still has the gargage and in the picture, the gargage is gone.

The Phoenix fire fighting method is not all that bad if you like having everyone running around the fire scene wearing vests. If you need an example of aggressive firefighters take a trip to DC or PG county.
