Cost of a live-in Nanny (5 days/week)
Posted by: diaper ()
Date: January 10, 2011 02:33PM

[I had a conversation with someone who related a nanny situation that she herself got from someone else - thus very indirect]

Anyway, this someone mentioned a friend who wants a 5-day/week live-in nanny to take care of one baby. The person being considered for the nanny job is a native speaker of the correct language but neither speaks English nor drives. They have reached the point of discussing appropriate pay.

Without mentioning that dollar amount, here're a few pieces of information.

(1) The nanny would be live-in (room and board) for 5 days per week.

(2) One baby to take care of.

(3) Transportation for the nanny provided by the employer to and from nanny's home (this seems weird to me (2 days a week other "home") but that's what they mentioned).

(4) Some small set of paid holidays would be provided, too.

Okay, so how much does such an arrangement cost per month or day?

Anyone with experience with this sort of thing?

[I haven't got a clue about this one - =I= was the nanny to my kid...]

Probably looking at $15.00 an hour.

For your husbands sake, make sure she's hot.

Lol! Sorry, not talking about our own situation here - this is for real, though indirect.

Is a nanny going to want to be live-in for just 5 days a week? It seems like if they're paying for a place to live they'd want to get away from you and your snotnosed ankle-biters for the evening every day. I thought this was the type of thing that people brought au pairs over from wherever and paid them a stipend and gave them the extra room for.

My experience is that this has no effect on the cost. Nanny is living with you for your convenience - never late due to traffic, weather, etc.

Makes no difference except some may ask for more than the going rate for multiple babies.

So she has no car. Again, no effect on rate.

Standard.

$15 - $18/hr. I would caveat that though based on your comment regarding the 'correct' language - sounds like everyone involved is non-native English speaker. My experience is that there is the going rate that say a nanny from South America would charge regular, local Americans, and the rate say that an Indian family would pay an Indian nanny. Seems wierd, but I think there is a little sub-market of people who work for others of their native countries. No clue on what that pays, but I think less than an open market rate.

The one for $15 and hour does not seem physically capabale of rushing little Caleb or Madison into the emergency room in the event he/she is run over by one of the neighbours teenagers driving around thier Ranger Rover.

A live in au pair would receive room & board along with a weekly stipend of around $200-250.

If you've got the space, a live-in au pair makes sense compared to schleping your kid to day care.

I'm purposefully staying away from the politics involved here. For THIS thread I'm only interested in getting an estimate of what such a beast costs from those who have experience with such things. There are LOTS of other things being discussed by the person looking for the nanny (that may not have been mentioned in this thread) that don't necessarily settle well with me but that is NOT what this thread is about.

For those who are answering the initial post - looks like you're all pretty much spot on with pricing - searches for nanny pricing are getting lots of "$15" results.

Au Pairs are just under $200/wk stipend (set by the Feds) and agency placement fees is around $7K.

The $15/hr rate is going to be way higher than your friend is paying. The reason is simple. You said the nanny is non-english speaking but speaks the native tongue of the client. If its an asian, hispanic, african, or persian family, then I would bet they're paying about $1200 a month flat. Or about half of what a 15/hr nanny would get. The reason is simple. The nanny knows her client base is much smaller than even the worst english-speaking nanny. Even worse is that since she's a live-in she'll be working more than 8hrs per day.

Is shagging included in that rate, or do I have to pay her extra?

You're a chump if you're shelling out $15/hour. Here's what you do:

1) Take her passport away. Tell her you're just "keeping it safe."
2) Offer her $15/hour. (So $120/day)
3) Here's the secret: you charge her $50/day rent, $40/day food, $5/day passport storage fee, $10/day utilities, $20/day withholding (which you pocket).
4) After two weeks when she asks for a paycheck, BAM, she owes you $50.
5) If she complains, threaten to send her back to her country.

Result: free child care. Total win.

Why not take away her bra and panty as well so she parades around the house like your sex slave?

Because OP was asking about live-in nannies, not sex slaves. There's a different--albeit similar--procedure for those.

Speaking of which, what's the rate for a sex slave?

This is no joke, it's exactly what goes on with these expat households - especially those from LatAm countries.

Even we had two while growing up...they were twins for Sweden. My Mom kicked them out when she found out my brother and I were fucking them senseless. She found out when one of the stupid twins left a message for me (on the family phone rather than on my personal phone) saying she had her period so we could only do anal that night! They moved back to Sweden...one's a porn star now and the other is an investment banker!

Then you cannot afford one. I know a not so friend of mine who spends more on her car payments. Poor nanny. She brags she pays her $10.00 an hour for two toddlers plus the nanny cooks and cleans.

I am not jealous. I love my kids and I want them to learn english.

We had a similar situation a year or so ago. Our nanny cared for my 7 mo daughter at home and also did the cooking and kid's laundry (my daughter and 3 yr old son who went to full time day care). The nanny spoke our native language and passable English and could also drive. She was live-in 5 days a week with weekends off. However she stayed with us most weekends too since her family was in another State. If either my husband or I was working then she helped on weekends and I paid her extra.
She had the standard paid major holidays, and we paid the employment taxes-social security, medical insurance and had her on our car insurance. We paid 500/wk plus Weekends if working and I paid for her round trip ticket to and from India (about 1200-1500$) once a yr when she visited her parents.

I have a friend that employed a nanny for some 3-years and it probably saved her close to $200 a week in daycare costs. The only problem that I see with it, is the kid doesn't get much exposure to other children.
