Joe Condo, Mark Sandground, David Masterman, Kathleen O'Brien, Jim Cottrell, Betty Thompson, Richard Colten, Robert Shoun, Glenn Lewis, Marty Gannon and a few others. Most of these people are going to charge upwards of $500 per hour.

The big question is do you really need THE BEST? Is there something about your case that requires you to incur a six figure legal bill in order to separate your property and resolve custody and support issues? Don't get me wrong: There is a reason why these guys get the big money. You are going to get some services from them that you might not get with less expensive attorneys, and in an extremely close case they might be the difference. However for more run of the mill cases there are a great many of us "second tier" attorneys who can obtain about the same result at a much lower price.

If you're a woman get the cheapest one you can find or possibly none. If you're a man don't waste your money......It just won't matter.

Heather Cooper in Fairfax, http://www.cgglawyers.com/

My adulteress ex-wife used one of these attorneys: "Joe Condo, Mark Sandground, David Masterman, Kathleen O'Brien, Jim Cottrell, Betty Thompson, Richard Colten, Robert Shoun, Glenn Lewis, Marty Gannon and a few others. Most of these people are going to charge upwards of $500 per hour."

I walked away with the house and the healthy equity, the newer car and being with the kids, most of the time.

Brookfield Resident, do you know the hourly rate of Brian Hirsh and everyone else out there, do you have any suggestions for top attorneys in NOVA where price is at $375 as maximum?

Good luck finding a decent lawyer for that amt of money per hour. If you do not have a lot to split up or more then two kids a cheap lawyer will do. If you want to screw it to your spouse you will need to pay more upfront.

Bill N,

Thanks- My apology, meant Susan Butler with Shoun.com law firm. Also, if anyone may know that hiring a good attorney in a well-reputed firm like Shoun.com is just as good as hiring a well-known attorney. And how much cost does it add if you live in a different county for courrier costs, etc?

Honestly, if you are trying to micromanage this down to the level of courier costs, you likely can't afford any of the attorneys that have been identified here, and if you can, you will not be satisfied, no matter what the outcome, because of what it has cost you.

In a word, No.

A lawyer in a good firm is going to have access to the firm's resources. At best you are still relying on the knowledge and skills of the attorney who is handling the case. Of course one of the better known higher profile attorneys in the firm could step in and take over the case, but when that happens you are going to end up paying that lawyer's high rates rather than the junior attorney's lower rates.

That said there are some very good attorneys who are associates or junior partners in firms run by "name" attorneys. Examples would include Anne Goodwin with Fite & O'Brien in McLean, Colleen Sweeney at William B. Reichhardt's firm in Fairfax or Carol Ehlenberger with Brian Hirsch in Reston. (Sorry no opinion on Ms. Butler) There are others of equal caliber in NoVa.

I said at best because there can be downsides to using second tier attorneys. Some of these firms have the same high level billable demands that you find at large firms, so the number of hours being put into your case may rachet upwards. You can run into similar games from name attorneys though. General rule is that whenever an attorney says they do something to keep your costs down, they mean it will make them more money.

I am a divorce lawyer but I do things differently. I will set-up your spouse in a way that it will never look like entrapment. I will make her life a living hell and wear her down to the point that she is broke and desperate just to reach a settlement. I will publicly embarass her at work and amongst her friends that she will want to crawl under a rock and die. These bitches are like third world dictators, they are stubborn cunts that you have to use extreme measures to drill it into their heads that the only way out of this mess is to raise the white flag and give in to the husband.

Susan Hicks is really good. She's in the same ballpark as the $500 / hour guys (that's actually her rate). She's Washingtonian's Top 50, etc.

I had someone from her firm. She has other lawyers with lower billing rates too. The key with divorce lawyers is that they will bill you tons to fight over just about anything. I mean - they bill by the hour. What I liked about them was that they didn't let my wife get away with BS, but they also didn't bill me up the butt for stuff I didn't really care about.

Shoun is also pretty good too. They have a number of lawyers with a variety of rates.

If you have kids and money you should wait it out till they are 18. The amount of money you pay in lawyers fees and moving cost plus support will bankrupt you. Believe me.

Basically I think all men/women are pretty much alike in the long wrong. You get married in another few years and it is the same crap but with a different person. I wish everyone could sign up for a ten year marriage with an option to renew.

if you have no kids... convince her of a divorce... go find some cheap online bullshit forms, print them out, take them to some BS lawyer to sign and both walk away with some dignity.

if you have kids... Your pretty much Done!
Unless... you can prove them unfit... which is actually pretty simple...
After you separate (within a 1 year period) If you can prove them cheating... Hire a certified Private Investigator, Then get Your Kids!!! They pay you child support, AND Alimony (depending on income (obviously)

Mention this to Whichever Lawyer You Do hire...

My 25,000 out of pocket Lawyer recommended this several times, but i was too cheap to pay A P.I. upwards $600.00 and hour... and i knew she was Messing around... my child support now..... $1250.00 a month... I only make $68,000/yr

hope it helps..

otherwise...
find a new 'friend' to spend some time with...
and go home when your damn well ready.. make them divorce you.

I used Richard Colten for my divorce. $500/hour but worth every penny. Always makes the list of Washington's best divorce attorneys. His associates did the boilerplate stuff at a much lower rate so it all equalled out to using a less expensive attorney without large firm resources. You want the best possible attorney sitting beside you in the courtroom!

By far, the best divorce lawyer is Marc H. Botzin. He does not have a website or advertise on late night television, but this guy is a pitt bull. He is hands down, the best divorce attorney in the Northern VA area. I think his office is in Fairfax City now, he used to be in Old Towne Alexandria. Phone is 703-519-3900. He has represented me twice and both times, excellent results. This guy is to the point, no-nonsense, and always wins.

My experience with a Phillip Schwartz, a 500 dollar/hour lawyer on the Shoun Bach Walinsky & Curran team.

As of today, delay mentioned below is almost 17 weeks (more than 1/3 year.

Failed to timely send urgently needed divorce decree required for foreign court child custody petition. 13 week delay and was actively attentive only after I complained to VA Bar Association. emails from him show he was busy with other lucrative and apparently more important cases (including professional related travel abroad) during the 13 weeks as I had already paid in full and even paid in advance of completion. It appears he may have lost my documents also. Ignores most of my current email including request for "tracking number" of documents reportedly mailed to me. This delay sets me back for additional living expenses abroad and in addition sets me back for the same duration in lost income in my profession as a doctor.

Prior to retaining him he wrote in an email that the VA court will grant an adultery divorce if adultery is shown to the court. Other lawyers I consulted told me it was a discretionary decision up to the judge. I figured the other lawyers were downplaying what Mr. Schwartz stated as they did not have his purported vast experience and expertise. It turns out Mr. Schwartz emailed me this very same "discretion of the judge" disclaimer albeit cleverly worded, almost on the eve of the final hearing, well after he got my business. In retrospect, other experienced divorce lawyers were honest up front, and also hundreds of dollars less per hour. He lied to me to get my business.

I received multiple recurrent confidential email communications between him and other clients. Typically they were of cases of international nature and the headers were "spoofed" so they would appear as not being sent or cc'd to me. Perhaps he was trying to show me how important he is by the international nature of cases, perhaps careless, perhaps confused, although I tend to think they were intentionally sent in light of the "spoofing"

I can only assume he also shared my/our confidential communications in the same manner with other clients or potential clients.

Best advice is to not use a lawyer to pursue major legal action in any type of divorce. All Northern Virginia judges have heard it all before -- he said she said. You throw away a TON of money and the lawyers get rich and you still do not get the outcome that you wanted (no where near -- no matter how compelling your case).

Figure it out with your spouse. Divide up all the property yourselves. Negotiate with a far cheaper 3rd party mediator. Sure -- use a lawyer to find out what your rights are, and to make sure final agreements are legal and tight. But you are crazy to throw money away on a big lawsuit.

All other things being equal, get a female attorney.

You are right, attorneys are licensed by the state, it does not matter what county they are from. Maybe your friend meant that your attorney should be known/respected by the Fairfax courts and other lawyers here??? You do NOT want to go to court, but if you did, you would need an attorney who is liked by the judges in this county. And even that is no guarantee, judges are frequently brought in from outside the area. Just stay out of court, mediate a settlement.

My dad has been practicing in Richmond for 35 years but not family law. He recommended Joe COndo up here (I live in Arlington( but he was too high for me (650$/hr). Joe set me up with his most senior lawyer, Nuper Bal. We mediated in the end, but she set up the case so my ex folded like a... I hope to NEVER use her again (haha - no more divorces!!) but I have recommended her to two friends already.

Careful Lawyer above gave the best advice. DO NOT create or follow the path towards expensive divorce litigation requiring lawyers. At the end of the day their fees will milk you dry for no benefit. Negotiate with your spouse. Get a lawyer to review all legal docs as well as get an explanation of Virginia divorce law and the options available to spouses, but avoid protracted divorce legal proceedings.

Someone on her mentioned Keira Schwartz. I agree. A neighbor also used her, which is how I found her. I met with her awhile back. Case just settled and I couldn't feel better about it. Not sure what your rate ceiling is, but she was $365/hr I believe.

How about the worst ? ILONA GRENEDIER . she scammed me for 10's of thousand's of dollars, was very rude, unproffessional, shared personal information to the opposing counsel. Charges $700.00hr, drives a New Bentley Gt. The problem is that I got no representation from her and got screwed hard in the end. Many hate her and feel that she should be dis-bared.

Don't expect her to be unlike any of them.
She just does it in a skirt.
Also if she is doing something less than honorable
She gets an associate to do it. SOS

Get an attorney who will readily ADVISE you and has at least SOME professional pride. Too many listen to their clients when their clients want to file some moronic motion that will not be immediately dismissed, but doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of being successful. Those sorts of motions are a shameless yet greedy attorney's wet dream - time-intensive, convoluted, and insuring him/her numerous billable hours.

The ethical attorney (well, ethical is a relative term in the shark community) will not hesitate advising his/her client not to pursue a moronic motion even though that moronic motion will bring him/her plenty of billable hours.

I've found that William (Bill) Schmidt and his associate, Brook Rolka, are just that type of attorney who will advise their clients in such a manner.

Unfortunately, there are no trustworthy people given the gravity of challenges life gives to us.

My wife fell in love with a yoga instructor while I struggled to survive cancer. She refused to work and now enjoys 5 grand a month and emptied all bank accounts prior to announcing her intention to divorce. I had no idea that she was unhappy. I see now she is the rule, not the exception.

Virginia divorce laws are punitive for men. Don't ever marry in Virginia.

Agreed. God forbid if you have kids. Courts & moms usually yank them away from good fathers, then the newly-single moms run around saying "my kids' dad is completely out of the picture and wants nothing to do with his kids." No wonder American families are so fucked up.

David Roop of the Roop Law firm in Vienna/Tysons Corner is excellent. He is honest, settlement oriented but an amazing litigator as well. He's not cheap, but he is worth it - he also has excellent associate attorneys who bill at a lesser rate. He oversaw my case and had an associate work much on my case to save me money - highly recommended!

I agree with what ISSY said... "just okay," "overpriced," and "she just does it in a skirt." Why did you stay and continue to pay her $700/hr if you were unsatisfied with her performance? You should have just fired her, saved a lot of money, and gone elsewhere for representation, especially if she was as you described. Lawyers are a dime a dozen in NOVA. You can't really blame her for you sticking around. People are accountable for their own actions. You probably paid the lease on her Bentley that year.

It's worth mentioning here for those looking for a firm that her female Asian associate (maybe half Asian) is the absolute worst. She has a very limited vocabulary, especially in front of a judge. It appears that Ilona will assign her to her more "untrustworthy" clients. They are usually the ones that are not honest or forthcoming with her before discovery (i.e., compulsive liars, cheaters, no morals, hiding assets, abandoning children, etc.) She does not like to be embarrassed in front of a judge, but then again, who does? Ilona usually won't do the dirty work of defending such a person herself in court, but she will assign an associate and take their money. Why? Because she can.

If it is an option, mediation is still the smartest choice. It will save both parties a ton of dough.

In general, the OP fucked up in a couple of ways:
1) He got married, and now things have gone to hell.
2) He never had the foresight to think about pre-nup, or how to un-wind the deal.
3) Coming to FFXU for any advice is, well, a gamble. For every nugget of good advice: expect 100 insane comments, mine included! That being said, if you are asking for a good lawyer, here, well, your case is already a lost cause. Bend over, pull open the ole bombbay doors, and let her give it to you any way she wants. She has won, and you have suffered a loss. Now just giving up your money, pride, primary residence is what you have to look forward to.

I had one of the " cheaper " lawyers listed. And my ex had one from Choun/Bach. However it's spelled. Let's say he is in $75k at least in dept and I am paid off. I have the kids, the house and he pays okay child support, plus other things. My only thing is choun and bach are very unethical and this particular lawyer we went against truly should have their license revoked. Lies, lies, and this isn't cliche that I'm saying this because circuit court judge asked the attorney why they had not represented what truly happened all the while there were documents proving the truth.

If she is pulling down $700k a year I'm guessing the household assets are quite substantial. No offense but if you are only pulling down $30k/yr then you have hit the jackpot with the offer you have. Take it, let her have partial custody so you have some free time on a schedule to spend the windfall, and move on with life.

I don't know if you have done the math, but what she is paying you in alimony equals what you make in a year before taxes. Shared custody would mean her child support payments will stretch further. You didn't say how old the kids were, but make sure she will be paying child support until the last kid hits 18 or graduates high school (whichever is last). I can't tell by your note if you meant both child support and alimony were meant to only last three years.

As a lawyer practicing in NOVA, (I would put my name here, but know better....) would recommend Dan Dannenbaum or Katherine Fogarty. Would've said Betty Thompson, legendary, but just recently passed away, still practicing into her 80's.
Roop as mentioned before is a good choice as well. There really are many good lawyers in that field, talk to a couple and find one you are comfortaqble with, that is probably more important than cost. You know what they say, divorce is expensive because it's worth it!

You have issues, likely small penis and large Scotch for too long, because what you're describing is not a "she" , but a " he" and a " dick" rather than a "bitch", you must also be the kind of lawyer who wants to make a quick buck playing on mainly stigma rather than fact. Go f()$&@ yourself!

Well said, my ex-bitch fought me with a cheap ass attorney, while I was spending $500 an hour on a worthless overrated attorney. The results were devastating. I lost my kids which I shared 50/50 custody with for 2 years while we fought over them. Now I get them every other weekend. It destroyed my children and their confidence. Nobody wanted to hear from my children and what they wanted.
Then I lost every dollar I had left and it left me with a business that had no money to operate and borrowing money from everyone I could to try to stay afloat. The ex-bitch received hundreds of thousands, my kids, then married her co-worker that she had been cheating on me with after she received her asset payment of $340,000. This was money earned after the separation but the courts didn't care. The ex-bitch also makes $115,000 a year at her job and had a huge 401K.
I have no retirement, no kids and no working capital to show for having an expensive attorney.I also got stuck paying the taxes on the asset money the bitch received. I had already paid for my kids college using the 529-plan so she is set for life and I'm stuck working for life to just scrape by.
The moral of the story is fuck these attorneys that take your money and encourage all of this bullshit that cause you and your children a lifetime of stress.
The judge that handled my custody case was Judge Jan Brody, who in my opinion is the worst judge on the face of the earth. When my attorney learned who the judge would be, she commented that we were screwed because we got the "mother judge"

Judge Jan Brody couldn't see through my ex-bitches bullshit and was supposed to give our lawyers equal time but she gave the ex-bitches attorney almost twice the time we got. Judge Jan Brody is garbage in my opinion and ruins men and children's lives in order to make herself feel better. In my opinion she hates all men or she wouldn't have her bad reputation as the "mother judge".
My kids are in and out of counseling thanks to her and her reckless use of power.
Our legal system sucks and so do these bitches that can't be responsible and fair.

In short don't waste your money on an attorney because the results are always the same.

Sorry dude. I had Judge Schell and he was awesome, wise, fair, and just a beautiful, beautiful human being. He should get the Nobel Peace Prize as far as I'm concerned. So glad I didn't get Judge Brodie or I'd be fck'd. Get some new p@ssy. That always helps make you feel better. Sorry, but kids are always fck'd either way in a divorce. Mine are now doped up on Risperdal thanks to my selfish cunt ex-wife.

On the recommendation of several friends and others, I used Susan Hicks, She was ineffective, hugely over-priced, and clearly was more concerned about runnung up an incredible bill than trying to get what I wanted out of the divorce. Told me I should not go to mediation, which I should have done months ago. I am still not finished yet--DO NOT HIRE HER!!!!

You folks are too lazy to work on marriage, think it is easier to divorce. Seems like a lot of unhappy men on this thread. Some of you are stupid enough to get hitched more than once. Maybe it is "you" not your wife who are the losers. so what if your wife puts on a few pounds, you probably are not in "your high school football studley shape" anymore either. I know I am not, I look in the mirror.
My wife and I treat each other with respect. I know a good thing when I have it, and I am not going to screw it up.
Some of my buddies regret walking away from their OK marriages. The grass is not greener on the other side. Think again!!
Try to work things out.

Okay, what services do you get for the higher price? A more thorough investigation? More research? Backdoor connections to judges? And, conversely, does a lower-priced lawyer bill for more hours? Does he drag the case out longer (either to boost the bill or because doesn't know how to end it)? If a famous super-lawyer just writes a letter to the other side saying "Settle with us or we will crush you," and a prompt settlement occurs, does he charge less for the job than a cheaper guy who spends months going back to court? Just hypothetically, what is a realistic total price for a basic divorce for the average middle-class couple? And is there a mechanism for the couple themselves to sit down and work out a deal fair to both without paying zillions to lawyers?

BEWARE: While Ilona Grenadier May have been one of the best divorce attorneys in the DC area many years ago — her reputation only precedes her. The sad TRUTH is, she is nothing more than a money grabbing SNAKE!

The best thing she does now is ... convince you that she cares, plays on your emotions, promises you the moon ... but not without immediately taking ALL your money in advance and leaves you to twist in the wind as she milks you dry.
She did this to me and then turned my case over to a completely incompetent minion attorney by the initials CA.

If I had $1,000 for every error I had to point out/correct in any number of pleadings, motions, e-mails to opposing counsel, etc. they produced... she'd owe me money!!!! And when I had finally had enough and decided to change attorneys, she even had the Fg hairs to try and charge me for MY work product to date!!!!

Furthermore, I am convinced that her 'scorched earth' MO is actually designed to take your case to trial (instead of settling) where she is guaranteed the big payday ... Not you!

If you think your Ex is gonna F you over — you haven't hired Ilona.

Kate has a good rep, but she is on the top end expense wise. If you have absolute proof of adultery - need to be rock solid - then go with a cheap lawyer. This is the only case in VA when the man does not get fucked. It will be a fault divorce and she won't get shit!

Wish my ex would have cheated on me - the frigid, lazy, nonworking bitch got half of everything plus alimony for life - what happened to women being equal to men?

you could go online and get the form and both agree and fill it out, mail it to the court. wait the req. period of time. done. that simple.

(ie, through family or by mail if you all don't show respect to one another / argue)

it'd save you a boatload of money. lawyers are famous for making divorces take longer and sucking out all the money from both sides either of you would gain in a "fair settlement", by telling you lies about the "potential outcome"

i think VA is a "50/50" state, assuming your a VA resident to begin with.

if your not stop using our courts for free!! pay up.

so if you can agree without involving "forced settlement" do it. really forced settlements, enforced by the awsoem power of public police, should be left if one party simply refuses to pay debts that are more than, say, $500, that one can argue is owed by law.

Then 5 years later find out that you are still married. That is some of the worst legal advice offered on this forum.

There are a number of attorneys who offer low cost divorces in Virginia, and some of them may have on line set ups. It is also possible to do it yourself. You don't need a lawyer if you are willing to take the time to learn how to do it right. The process you describe Sven isn't followed in Virginia.

If you have enough assets or debts to consider fighting over, you probably need to talk with an attorney. You may be able to work out the settlement terms on your own, but you should know what the rules are first.

The truth about divorce in Virginia

The truth about divorce in Virginia
http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20130906/OPINION/130909479/1065/the-truth-about-divorce-in-virginia&template=fairfaxTimes

When Ken Cuccinelli sponsored legislation in 2008 to repeal Virginia’s no-fault divorce law for couples with children, he said, “This law has everything to do with the breakdown of the family. The state says marriage is so unimportant that if you just separate for a few months, you can basically nullify the marriage.”

Even though five years have passed since the bill was introduced, it is worth considering what it reveals about Mr. Cuccinelli’s approach to public policy.

The predicate for his legislation — the idea that no-fault divorce in Virginia allows people to casually and quickly end their marriages — is a myth. The head of a social conservative group, the Family Foundation, wrote approvingly of then-Sen. Cuccinelli’s legislation, saying, “It is time that Virginians agree that the 30-year experiment with unilateral, no-fault divorce has failed.”

In almost 40 years in practice I have yet to encounter a client for whom ending a marriage has been anything other than a wrenching decision. Furthermore, Virginia already has one of the lowest rates of divorce in the nation.

It’s also highly misleading to suggest that Virginia’s no-fault grounds allow for a quick divorce; in what I call “pure” no-fault states, a party can fill out a form citing “irreconcilable differences,” and after a very brief waiting period, the divorce is finalized. In Virginia, couples with minor children — for whom Cuccinelli says he wants to make it harder to get divorced — have to be separated for a year before the divorce can be filed. And if the couple hasn’t agreed on custody, property, or support issues, it can take several months, or even a year or more, for the divorce to finally be concluded. Most divorcing couples in Virginia use the year’s separation period to resolve all the legal issues relating to the breakup, so that by the time the year has passed, there is nothing to contest.

The other illusory assumption underlying this bill is that children would benefit if there were no no-fault grounds. Trapping individuals in desperately unhappy marriages for a longer period of time would result in even more emotional damage to their children and increases the risk that a bad marriage becomes dangerous.

It doesn’t take a psychological study (although there are dozens) to tell us that divorce is hard on children. The more adversarial a divorce, and the longer it drags on, the likelier it is that the stress on the children will increase exponentially.

Finally, one cannot ignore what this proposal says about Cuccinelli’s attitude toward Virginia women. Let’s face it: even with huge cultural changes over the past several decades, the financially-disadvantaged or abused spouse is still almost always the wife, and thus the negative effects of his legislation would fall disproportionately on women. Regrettably, this bill falls right in line with Cuccinelli’s unwillingness to support increasing child support, the Violence Against Women Act and women’s health access. A recent Washington Post report on his ties to “Fathers’ Rights” groups may also help explain Cuccinelli’s legislative history.

Cuccinelli’s proposal to repeal no-fault divorce is a good example of what happens when public policy is based on ideology, ill-informed pseudo-social science, wishful thinking, or all of the above. Not only is its ostensible purpose of keeping married people together a fraud, but it would increase the emotional and financial cost on individuals seeking a divorce and, worst of all, place their children at risk of unnecessary additional trauma from the breakup of their parents’ marriages. What’s scary is that this legislation is also a perfect example of Cuccinelli’s simplistic, ideology-driven and shortsighted philosophy of governing.

Joseph A. Condo is a family law attorney and the former president of the Virginia State Bar.

get a form online.

be respectful and express respect to your x (so you don't argue, is why). agree on a sum. 1/2 of what, if there is anything to have 1/2 of.

file it. wait 6 mo.

do not cheat during it: you can get backlashed for what you do in court during those 6 mo.

===========================
if you get a lawyer by the time they are through lying to you and billing you there will be nothign left to get 1/2 of, deery. that's what i see people complain of allot.

on the other hand. if your disabled or there is something special like a owned company involved you might not want advice. but even with advice settle out of court if you can it's far cheaper.

go to court if the settlement needs enforcing

============================
are you a GUY? if so argue to get a male judge. i guarantee you fx courthouse clerk office et al is run by misandrous women and will assign a female judge if they can get away with it

fx courthouse is not known for being fair and biased.

is your x a gov worker and you are not? your screwed. she'll win. give up while you can.

I used Debra Powers from the Susan Hicks Group in Fairfax. She was excellent and she helped me sort through some important financial issues for the property settlement. At a court ordered mediation session before things were finalized, the court's representative complimented Ms. Powers on her knowledge of complex inheritance laws and he looked right into my ex's face and said "she just cost you a bundle." Fees to me were clearly explained up front and well within what was discussed. (At the time, she was significantly less per billable hour than Susan Hicks, but this was five years ago.) She was supportive, not combative, and as long as progress was being made, she was pleasant towards my ex and his lawyer. Once they started stonewalling, she pulled out the stops. I highly recommend.

Betty Thompson = dead
Glen Lewis = disbarred or suspended (search of google if you don't believe me)

i wouldnt hire any of those others. I don't know Kathleen O'Brien, but all the others are old. In my experience, older attorneys are overpriced (400+ per hour) and are lazy. They will bluster and go on and on in court, they will tell you everything you want to hear, but in many cases, they are looking to maximize their billing when most of what you will get could be obtained by a younger attorney who is hungry.

I advocate going for someone with about 5-7 years of experience. Such a person is probably still hungry and not completely burned out. Talk to the potential attorney - make sure it is someone you feel comfortable with - you want someone who will tell you the law not be quick to do whatever you say.

Be careful though - divorce is the easiest area of law to practice (one code section) and is usually practiced by the worst attorneys. There are some good ones, but you should definitely shop around.

Good luck!

I have attached my response to her interest in Intervening in my divorce - which is now on appeal to even get a Judge that is not corrupt. She has a lot of Power!

You are mistaken in recommending Colleen Sweeney. She is your spouse's best friend. Either you have no experience with her or you are a paid shill.

There is a good deal out there on your complaint that was written by you, or which quotes things you have written. Perhaps you would care to share something about it written by a neutral party, such as one of the judges who have heard your case.

As a client who is concerned about rate and quality representation this is the right choice. Chris Lapham, Bean Kinney, Sris at Sris Law Group are the lawyers I have used and they are both in the $350 per hour range and definitely know what they are doing. I think it is crazy to spend $500 per hour for a divorce when what you really need is a lawyer who is going to fight for you. Both these guys go to bat for you without any hesitation. Initially I spoke to one of Sris law group customer service person at around 8 o clock in the evening. He fixed an in person appointment for me to meet with attorney Sris. After meeting with Mr. Sris I was really comfortable with his knowledge and experience. I am glad that I hired him. Now I am in peace. I also used Chris Lapham once, he did a good job As well. Great value for money.

Best divorce firm in the area is Ain & Bank. The office is in DC but they have people licensed in Virginia. These people are high end divorce attorneys that handle the biggest cases. They are not lawyers with a "junkyard dog" reputation. They will be much scarier to your spouse's lawyer than a junkyard dog.

There is no best divorce lawyer in Virginia. Divorce is your failure to choose wisely. If you did choose wisely, there is good reason not to divorce.

The exception is the tyranny of your government AKA Obamacare whereby you are left no options.

When I got divorced I interviewed and researched a lot of Fairfax lawyers:

Here are some of the best ones, best I could tell: David Roop (not inexpensive but very good), David Masterman, Susan Hicks, John Byrnes, Susan Butler and Keenan Goolsby at Shoun firm. And Gerry Curran and Grant Moher in Fairfax.

Only advice is don't hire anyone who isn't a full-time divorce lawyer - my first lawyer said he handled "lots of divorces" but he did a lot of other things, and I had to change lawyers.
And I think all the posters here are right about Ilona Grenade-launcher -

My ex hired Robin E. Adler as her attorney.

Adler was a bitch to deal with, she constantly filed motions against me thus jacking up legal bills. While she couldn't even file her responses in time and when the hearing was scheduled in front of a judge that she didn't like or perhaps the one who didn't like her, she would pretend that she fell and hurt herself and get the hearing rescheduled.

Not a attorney you want to see in family court.

What are your suggestions for a tort case against the ex-mistress of one's husband? She's such an over-achiever that not only did she knowingly have a 3 year affair with a married man, she took him to Spain to meet her family and then chose to have a baby with the man. Of course, the pregnancy was an "accident" and she recently sued for child support. Now she is trying to give him a hard time about visitation with his own child. If you have not guessed, I am the spouse whose life has been turned upside down in the past 6 months. The man already had three children with me. I understand there is no "alienation of affection" option in Virginia any longer, but there MUST be something on the level of tort law that can be used against her since she has ruined my life, my kids lives and continues to be unreasonable and unapologetic. Please don't tell me to "get over it" because I have, but my kids won't. If a drunk driver turned your life upside down, a jury might award a multi-million dollar award, so how is this any different? It was not an accident, it was planned, and it was with malice.

Your best chance might be to try to sue her in North Carolina. They still recognize alienation of affection.

The problem with your DWI analogy is if a drunk driver killed your husband, chances are he didn't have your husband's permission. Your husband is the one who owed you a duty of fidelity. He is the one who violated that duty. Your complaint is against him and the place to pursue it is in the divorce action.

Okay, I'm now qualified to have an opinion on a number of family law attorneys and will provide it if desired. In particular, I too can provide useful data with the Hicks law group , especially Susan Hicks and her apparent consistent strategy Which may not work for you depending on what side you're on. She's certainly not a girls girl, completely overrated, and clearly overpriced.
There are others to whom I have more knowledge and experience than I would like to and they are Mark Sandground,Richard Byrd, Glen Lewis, Dan Dannenbaum,John Angus,Sammy Knight, and David Duff. Lewis is gone and Byrd may be soon if not already. Mark Sandground should be gone and is no barracuda anymore, not for some time. Watch out for a David Duff no matter who you are but you better have a lot of money. If you don't it's likely you won't get the time of day. But you won't figure that out until after you've paid a modest 10k retainer. What comes next ....

If you have no kids and your divorce settlement wouldn't be too complicated, Kales and Kales have flat fee divorces to where you never even have to go to court. My divorce was $700 plus $86 court costs/filing. I think it's $599 if there are no kids or property.

My ex and I are on good terms so it was an easy process. Totally worth it to avoid court.

The other side of the divorce case wanted Kate to be the mediator. We accepted, and Kate moved the case from a complete impasse to a complete settlement quickly. The last part took the involvement of counsel as well, but that part was done quickly and efficiently, with a definitive result. I'd do it again.

I was very satisfied with the level of involvement, knowledge, communication and aggressiveness.

There are no good divorce attorneys.

I hired 2 in Fairfax and all they did was deplete assets. One was a "good lawyer" on the thread. There was zero benefit from hiring them. I'm bankrupt now.

They also make huge mistakes. Miscalculation of assets. Not listening. It's amazing. Shit dragged out and tens of thousands of dollars wasted. Divorce lawyers are just like a payday loan shop. Shitty service, exorbitant prices.

I'd recommend not listening to your friends who fucked their ex and find a mediator. It might cost you substantially less money and agitation.

Life is too short. If you hire a pit bull lawyer make sure you read about the negative consequences that can come from it. Suicide, homicide, kids with mental illness are sadly common in a litigated divorce. Also the pit bulls can make huge mistakes and cost you tons.

Good luck. Choose mediation.

Colleen Haddow. She tries to settle cases out of court, but understands that going to Court is sometimes the best option. Very responsive as well.

To the dads in this group: what’s a reasonable fee range for achieving a settlement agreement in Fairfax assuming few draft rounds between attorneys. I am at 18K Out of pocket. Assume one minor child support (not an issue) and alimony amount for seven years.

Any ballparks from real casss appreciated!

You are leaving out too many variables. How much property is involved and what is it. How much debt is there. Have the parties agreed to what is marital property and what is not. Are there any hard to value items. Are you fighting about who gets which pieces of property or just about the amount of the payment to equalize the division. Is there an agreement that the spousal support will last seven years or is that just your estimate or desire. Is the amount of support also agreed to, and what about modification of the spousal support. Is child support not an issue because you are OK with guidelines or it is not an issue because it has already been agreed to. Then there is the biggest issue of all. Are both sides reasonable, rational and informed and willing to set aside the emotional issues that are probably responsible for them getting a divorce in the first place.

I used Nick Solan. He's young and super busy, but he's $300/hr. He didn't take bullshit from my ex's lawyer, and everything was split equitably. He kept us out of court and made things happen fast. You just have to email him constantly or else you'll fall off his radar. Small price to pay for a divorce under $10k.

And I will add that there was custody of and support for 2 children involved with our divorce.

Early morning lawyer: you sound like a lawyer. and it ain't a compliment. an answering question with a question and no actual facts isn't an answer. I asked for ballparks. But true to your training, you answered with 'it depends'. Maybe that's why you are 'early am'...try night court...

My ex left me for someone else and left me without health insurance for months. Our great health care system didn't allow me to get a new plan because we weren't officially divorced. I had to wait weeks to get treated for cancer because that monster wouldn't keep me on her plan or a few months.

I know you don't mean it as a compliment, but I take it as one. It means I am not willing to pander to your unrealistic requirements, but instead insist on answering the question correctly, and in an informed manner.
