Which public school system is better?

I don't think it's possible to say "better" in general. If the question is whether the central headquarters is responsive to constituents, Loudoun wins. If the question is which school districts provides more generous special ed services, FCPS probably wins. If the question is which school district has nicer buildings, Loudoun wins. If the question is which school district has fewer boundary changes, the answer historically would have been FCPS. Etc.

Nice analysis!

Falls Church city hands down has the best school system. Falls Church is a small town within a larger nothern Virginia area It is like having a private school system within the beltway.

PS I would think Loudon schools are better since it pays more than FCPS.

Many people have moved to Loudoun County expressly for the special education services that Loudoun County provides. The superintendent in Loudoun County, Edgar Hatrick, believes in spending more on special education systems and vocational training. He does not actively support gifted programs. A friend of mine states that Hatrick feels the gifted don't need or deserve any additional services.

I agree that Loudoun has much better vocational training. They seem to link education to employment in a more direct manner---with work/study type programs.

I'm not sure about gifted, but they have some pretty good SAT scores.

Loudoun doesn't pay more, Fairfax does. But, loudoun puts more into your retirement/medical/etc.. so your take home is higher.

Fairfax has lot of oppurtunities for kids to excel through many after school clubs .Which provides a good platform to the kids .Very less after school or No after schoool clubs in Loudon .The schools are very reluctant to start one also. For getting into TJ or any good schools doen the lane along with the education they look at how the kid is doing in other areas. when the kids don't have an opportunity then ...
So my vote is FCPS rocks ....

Obviously my kids are in the Loudoun schools, and we are extremely pleased so far. Their school, while crowded, has an excellent principal and the facilities are first-rate. The high school my kids will most likely attend (John Champe) has not even opened yet and we expect it to be an incredible school. We'll be at Mercer Middle, which is no longer overcrowded now that all the South Riding kids can go to Lunsford (and get drunk before class).

Having said all that, our move from Fairfax had nothing to do with schools. The schools my kids would have attended had we still lived over there (Lees Corner or Navy Elementary, and Franklin Farm Middle), are all good schools too.

Loudoun school boundaries keep shifting because the county keeps building new schools. That's a good thing!

Hey it's not just the students at Lunsford that get drunk before class!

The most important factor is teacher retention and satisfaction. If Loudoun is more responsive to its constituents, you can bet they are more responsive to their teachers as well. Teacher happiness=student happiness. I know two very good teachers who left FCPS for positions in Loudoun. They went for the money, but I'm sure there may have been other factors.

Don't know what some of you are talking about but FCPS pays more than LCPS. It's public info - look it up on the interwebs.

Technically, FFX County does not have magnet schools. Instead, the schools are designated AAP Level IV schools. Regardless, I doubt FFX County would allow you to send your son to FFX County schools when you live in Loudon County and pay your taxes to Loudon County.

Might I ask why you are moving to Loudon county? Is it because you want a big new house and a 2 hour commute?

I worked as a sub in both Loudoun and Fairfax Counties before leaving for med. school and here is my take on both districts:

-FFX County Schools definitely have a more chill, relaxed atmosphere. They didn't make you pay for a BS sub handbook like Loudoun did. Being a sub is pretty easy to begin with, but FCPS seemed to give more leniency as to what a sub could do. I basically just made sure the kids didn't kill each other. As a bonus, FCPS actually leaves their unsecured wifi on during the school day so I could surf the web and let the time pass faster.

-Loudoun is more structured and thinks that subs make a huge difference in the kids' lives. Yeah, right. Read above about making us pay $20 for a stupid sub manual. One cool thing was that with LCPS, it was required the sub have a lesson plan left behind by the original teacher. One time in FCPS, the teacher didn't leave me jack shit. I thank god I had a DVD of Mulan in my bag to pop in so the kids wouldn't go all Lord of the Flies in the room that day.

-LCPS pays better at a hair under $15/hr. FCPS, was less I can't remember how much.

Mantua is NOT a magnet school unless your child is deaf. There are eaqually good schools in or closer to Louden. Personally, can't wait until by boy is out of Mantua Elementary this year.

Not so for all. I have both kids in Level IV AAP classes and their is no equivalent in Falls Church City Schools (or Arlington). Fairfax rules over all others when it comes to level iv aap - period.

CFC schools are possibly better for main stream kids but then again most houses in Falls church are in the 3/4 million range plus.

Which has more school spirit? That's what you need to get hired at Cutco or Vector Marketing. From there you can move up to a Home Depot parking lot solicitation job.

You don't need literacy-just ask Jack Dale. What you need is spirit, pep rallies, sports and a loud band.
