University of Northern Virginia?
Posted by: Doctor ()
Date: November 15, 2010 01:08PM

So in another post on here I saw someone refer to the University of Northern Virginia. Has anybody attended this "university" or know anyone who has? It claims to be accredited by the American University Accreditation Council (AUAC), yet the AUAC is not recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. What is up with this school?

Forget about UNV, go to the Stratford Career Institute. Looks great on the ol' resume.

UNVA is a diploma mill. A lot of those shady "schools" create their own accrediting body so it gives an air of legitimacy when they advertise as accredited.

Look for regional and program accreditation when looking around at schools to attend. Places like Strayer and University of Phoenix, Devry, etc. are regionally accredited, but don't have program accreditation. Means a lot if you want to transfer to another school or go for a graduate degree.

Well i am finishing up with my masters from a real school in december. If I pursued a doctoral degree from UNVA (yes they offer them), would I be able to put the Dr. in front of my name?

University of Northern Virginia used to rent office space in Manassas from a company I worked for. I only ever saw foreign students come in to talk to them. They had three small offices I think.

It's not that they create the accrediting body, it's that the accrediting body is not recognized by CHEA. Anything not recognized by CHEA is worthless.

These pseudo-accrediting bodies are created solely for giving out seals of approval for the online and for-profit schools. Real schools stick with regional and program accrediting; be suspicious of any school that advertises of national accreditation.

The accreditation system in the US is pretty much a mess. It would better if one group determined the rules for the entire country. APU/AMU opened a secondary office in West Virginia just to be able to receive regional accreditation.

The Southern Association of Colleges has very tough standards and is not very interested in for-profit schools. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools is actually easier in its standards than some of the national accreditors. APU opened the office in West Virginia so that they could receive the regional accreditation form NCA since SACS wouldn't.

Since I plan on joining the tea party, the fact that AUAC is not recognized by EDU intrigues me.

Choosing a school based on accreditation is one thing. Choosing it because of the chicks is another. I will take GMU any day for the chicks.

Well, if you want to do it based on "chicks":

USC (the one in California)
UC Santa Barbara
Florida State
Clemson
Alabama

Try those on....

I love how you have "schools" like the University of Northern Virginia and American Public University that sound kind of like the names of real schools in order to fool people.

I guess quality is debatable, but American Public University is closer to "real" than University of Northern Virginia. At least APU's accreditation is recognized.

One of these places just popped up in Tysons Corner. Sanford Brown College. I was wondering who these Sanford Brown folks were, so I checked out their website. One of their selling points on why it's great is that it's close to the mall. I'm not making that up.

LOL It looks like that one focuses on the healthcare industry. I can't imagine how the graduates from there could ever find a real job with that bullshit degree.

The one on Gallows Road? It used to be called Washington Business School, then Gibbs College. It will probably be owned by another company in a few years.

Things must have changed since I went there, they had nothing but heinous chubby yentas from NYC, long island, and Connecticut who couldn't do anything but call mommmy and talk on their cell phones all day. Yeah, I banged the hell out of a bunch of them, but in those days, it was all about quantity, not quality for me. Still is, unfortunately. Fucking 5 "2's" is the same as nailing a 10, and there was many a night when I was like i hope none of my friends see me with her.

Yeah, but it takes a J.D, M.D., or a MBA from UVA to pop open those cankles to get to their goodie pouches between their legs. Tell them you're an Engineering student at GW and their legs slam shut like a time lock safe at the bank.

proud graduate from UNVA, you can call it a degreemill, employers call it a degree that satisfy's a requirement for a job. It gets you in the door to sell yourself and your on equal footing with someone with a degree from XY university. Especially around here, in the IT field my degree weather accredited by a specific organization or not has satisfied contract requirments for Lockheed, BAE systems and Accenture for bachelaurate degrees for candidates to be considered. Get a few certs and a clearance and UNVA will set you up for success like any other degree

You must mean a bachelorette, not a baccalaureate. You can go into any local bar and get a bachelorette.

Sounds like his employer sent him there to get a 'degree' to satisfy contract staffing requirements.

I think NVCC specializes in certificate programs for healthcare jobs. You don't need a whole lot of training to go into medical billing, lab technician, or radiology technician.

You'd be better off lying on your job application by telling them that you went to a school you never attended. As long as its not a government job where you can be prosecuted for falsifying information. A family friend used to work over at the Pentagon, and whenever somebody would submit an application from DeVry or a similar "school" it went straight into the trash can. He said it was a common practice among HR people and anybody who does hiring.

Most likely at the big four because of the GW credential. Most managers know about Strayer.

I work for a major corporation and while I did graduate from a US news top 50 national school, the recruiter for this job just asked "and you have a four year degree?"

Of course I never would have gotten this job without the previous jobs I had that did require a degree.

My first job was for a very small piece of shit company and one of the "Vice Presidents" (we had a number of them) made six figures with his undergrad in Ghana and went to Strayer.

The only reason that company existed was because it got minority federal contracts due to a co owner being half Japanese.

Note to self

Start company
Recruit Alaska Native to be CEO on paper
make self Director of Operations with larger salary
Receive priority on contracts due to being disadvantaged and minority owned
Profit

Doctorates they offer (Phd) are not a medical doctor (MD). Even if they did give MDs you still have to pass a lot of tests to have a license to practice medicine and have a DEA number. Even an attorney with a Juris Doctorate (JD) is technically a doctor, yet of course you still have to pass the bar to practice law. I have seen a few MD and JDs which is just fucking crazy and awesome. Imagine you can practice law and medicine. He does malpractice suits and makes a killing.
