I heard that Golden Corral is also doing a free meal for Veterans and AD on Monday (15NOV10), from 5PM to 9PM (Dinner). I'm going to take the Old Man either tomorrow to Applebee's, or to GC on Monday.

Is it strange that I just want to be left alone on Veterans Day? (In case you're new here and don't know already I'm a vet) I appreciate seeing all of the mass "Thank you to our vets" facebook status updates and posts everywhere, but when I get texts, phone calls, e-mails and the like thanking me for serving I just kind of get annoyed and don't respond.

It's sad that these guys go off to a foreign land and give up their lives to fight for our country, and when they return, the practically get killed off by shitty restaurants offering discounts on Veterans Day.

Thank god they are the toughest guys/gals on the planet and have learned to avoid danger. Otherwise, they might end up at Chilis or Applebees. (or one of the other shitty restaurants).

I wish I personally knew the OP, I would buy him a nice meal at a for real restaurant!

I would submit that if nobody acknowledged your service you would become equally as annoyed. SO, thanks for your service Gonads!

The other extreme would be like the Vietnam days when you had journalists, college kids, and middle class people calling you a scumbag and baby killer all the while not getting treatment for your crippling PTSD.

Take your pick.

Anyways, I showed my DD214 at Applebee's and got a great steak free.

I checked the timestamps on the posts above against when I received your texts and am assuaged of guilt. You sent your texts nearly 3 hours after my post and without knowing that's how I felt about the holiday.

Welcome back and Happy Veteran's day to you - I know, a bit late, but I'm deployed in Helmand province and time goes backward here. I honor you, all my fellow Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Airmen and Coasties.

Oh. It looked like you posted this at 11:43pm and I sent you one text at 2:25pm. Not that it matters. Either way, yes it's strange and it sounds a bit dick-headed. I just try to be gracious about it and move on. I always find humor in things and what made me laugh a bit is how you thought you needed to inform those who may not know that you are a vet (I'm sure they would have figured that out on their own lol) and how you have personalized Veterans of Foreign Wars license plates on your car yet, the one day anybody is supposed to give a shit about our service, you get annoyed lol! You have to admit, that's funny right there. It's all good and now we know for next year. No worries. Oh, I think you can assuage your guilt, but not sure if you can be assuaged of guilt. Odd use of a word.

This does sound like your style of "grace" or perhaps your style of "try"

I always find humor in things and what made me laugh a bit is how you thought you needed to inform those who may not know that you are a vet (I'm sure they would have figured that out on their own lol)

You don't think like I do. You assume people would figure that out on their own...I know better, people have to be told.

and how you have personalized Veterans of Foreign Wars license plates on your car yet, the one day anybody is supposed to give a shit about our service, you get annoyed lol!

It's personal and I wouldn't expect you to understand. Although if me not responding to your text has upset you so much I will be more than happy to share my very personal private thoughts on why I feel the way I do about Veterans Day. It took a lot of introspection and left me feeling a little worse than I already did when I started, but if it satisfies your ego I'd be glad to re-hash all those feelings for you and, what the hell, for everybody else out there who may be reading too.

You have to admit, that's funny right there. It's all good and now we know for next year. No worries. Oh, I think you can assuage your guilt, but not sure if you can be assuaged of guilt. Odd use of a word.

You are giving me an English lesson? Or was that Mrs. Doesn't Matter? Either way...

They're not. It's Gonads talking to himself like he did with the screen name that he claimed was his wife. Multiple screen names are one thing, but when you talk to yourself on the internet it reaches a whole new level of sadness.

And I have a hard time picturing the real person behind the Mr. Misery screen name worth anything other than a self-inflicted gunshot to the skull.

@ eesh - not sure when you decided to turn against me or why, but if you can't read the posts from the other two users and tell it isn't me then you're plain retarded.

You really have no idea what you are talking about Chuck. Normally I wouldn't care about the ignorant comments, but these particular ones are coming from an unemployed middle aged man that lives with his mother and feeds his daughter with food stamps.

geez, eesh....what is it with you and food stamps? Did food stamps touch you as a little boy? Maybe--just maybe--he was on food stamps because he needed them (and I don't know if that's even true that Hoffmann was on food stamps, but anyway). You just don't have anything good to say about anybody or anything; you should be Mr. Misery, not me. I know it's the internet, but come on. You can't be this hateful in real life. If you are, I'm glad I don't know you.

Just mean.
