Boy, accused of bullying, kills himself
By Robert Mills, MediaNews
Posted: 10/29/2010 10:59:15 AM EDT

GROTON -- Hunter Perkins had been labeled a bully.

The Virginia boy, 16, a third-year student at the prestigious and private Groton School, was accused, along with two other boys, of harassing another student about his sexuality, according to his father, Walter Perkins. His father said he was told to come get Hunter immediately.

Within a week, Hunter Perkins would be dead.

Hunter's father, Walter Perkins, of Chantilly, Va., said he drove 10 hours overnight to pick up his son Oct. 6 from the school's infirmary.

Perkins said he was told his son would likely be expelled, and he was encouraged to have his son withdraw from school instead. Police were investigating. He took his son home.

The next five days would be hell for the Perkins family. Walter Perkins said he was angry with his son and the damage he had done to his future by allegedly joining with two other boys to create demeaning comics about another student.

He was trying to find another school for his son, and encouraged his son to leave Groton School, but Hunter wanted to fight any efforts to expel him. Walter Perkins said his son claimed many other students behaved the same way, and that he was being singled out.

But Walter Perkins said officials from the Groton School continued to contact him daily, pushing him to withdraw his son.

Finally, on the night of Oct. 11, just 10 hours after Hunter Perkins met his psychologist, the stress became too much for him.

Walter Perkins said he was in his bedroom, calling his daughter so that the family could get together to figure out what to do. (His wife died nine years ago.)
"There was the crack of a gunshot in the basement," Walter Perkins said.

He ran downstairs and found his son bleeding profusely. He tried to perform CPR, but Hunter would soon be dead.

An alleged bully had taken his own life.

Walter Perkins said he had locked up all of his guns because he knew his son was in a fragile state, but said his son found a gun his mother had owned.

Walter Perkins blames his son's death, at least partially, on the way Hunter was treated by school officials, whom he said were so eager to be politically correct that they never tried to teach his son a lesson.

"They knew my son was on mental-health medications, but they still had to treat us like dirt," Walter Perkins said last night.

Earlier this month, Groton School Headmaster Richard Commons confirmed for The Sun that a student had died, but said it was school policy not to disclose information on individual students. He would not comment on whether bullying played a role in the death, but said the school has an anti-bullying policy in place.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family," Commons said at the time.

He could not be reached for further comment last night.

A spokesman for Middlesex County District Attorney Gerard Leone confirmed that Groton police have sent the results of an investigation into a bullying incident at the Groton School to prosecutors, who are considering whether there was any criminal conduct.

No one has identified the two students Perkins had joined in the alleged bullying.

Walter Perkins, meanwhile, isn't sure what his next step will be. He hopes someone can learn from what happened to his son, a boy who he said was always eager to help others, and who had been picked on himself at the Groton School -- when he died his hair pink in support of breast-cancer awareness.

"I just hope they change their procedure," he said. "I'm praying something good comes out of this."

Had his own psychologist?

I'd hazard a guess he had issues somewhat worse than merely being a bully.

From the article: "(His wife died nine years ago.) ...
said his son found a gun his mother had owned."

So that gun had been around for nine years and he failed to secure it during all that time?

So his wife dies and you send your kid far away to school (600 miles) in massachusetts. Sounds like the father just didn't have the skills to raise his own kid. Needing Phsychological help at age 16 that requires medications? I really can't see this kids life ending up all rosy.

Sounds like teh father was emotionally unavailable.

Yeah, there was something else going on here. The dad lived at home alone, I assume, and the son was away at private school. The dad didn't know about his deceased wife's gun? Something fishy here...

It must have been difficult for the father to be left 9 years ago with raising his son alone.

However, I am curious as to why parents choose to send their kids to boarding school for the high school years. Just about all the children that I know who went to HS boarding schools were having some sort of difficulty.....not getting along with parents or issues the child had that the parents did not/could not deal with. Consequently, boarding schools are challenged with parenting these kids, and that can be overwhelming. Not saying this was the case. However, there could be an argument for out of sight, out of mind.

as an alum of the school, i know for a fact that yes, the school did tend to overreact, but all students know the rules (which include posting hateful photographs on facebook) as well as the punishment (expulsion), so its not like this kid didn't know the school was going to intervene. and to the comment that "schools kick kids out oo quick because its easier than teaching something", you clearly dont know anything about groton. their entire community and curriculum is based in great life values, and they always do everything they can to help troubled students learn and grow before taking disciplinary action.

furthermore, how can this incompetent fool of a father say the headmaster murdered his son by "overreacting", when killing oneself over getting kicked out (aka the main story here) is pretty much the biggest overreaction possible? if a 16 year old boy reacts to something like that by taking his own life, clearly he wasn't raised by good parents. and as for the gun issue, it takes a really stupid person to blame a DEAD WOMAN for keeping a gun in your home. he had to know his wife had a gun, so the fact that he would even bring up the issue of where the kid got a gun is completely ridiculous when its blatantly the father's responsibility.

i cannot believe this man is actually getting press coverage and support when he is the one who really is to blame. the school acted on a written code that i can assure every one of you ALL the students are very familiar with, so blaming the school could not be further from legitimate.

honestly, this so called father is just a shameless coward.

I don't recall reading anywhere in the story that the kid found the gun just before he shot himself, he could have found the gun 9 years ago when his mother died and hidden it somewhere in the house were his father would not have found it. Hell he could have been carrying that gun around for the last nine years for all you know.

Retard Gun Owners wrote - "....kid shoots himself in the head." Where did you get that piece of info from? The story I read said nothing about where he shot himself. This is the problem with you judgmental assholes, always making assumptions and not sticking to the facts.

This is typical of the parents in the past who used to claim that playing D&D, or violent cartoons, or watching stupid movies led to the death of their kid. In reality they were not raising their kid, or paying attention to the kid. Case in point, the kid is going to a private school 5-10 hours from home (assuming the 10 hour was round trip). That is a load of BS and the parents were attempting to have the kid be 'parented' by his school.

Now the father is going to blame everyone but himself for the problem. I feel for him, but in all reality this falls on the parents.

Well to be pointed with you; the Perkins family decided to get interviewed for the peice that ran online. In doing so, they have placed themselves up for public scrutiny.

Are we not to question this situation? Or just sit back and take it all in and never think to question just how this could have turned out different?

The last line of that article, the father states that he prays that something good comes of this. So we can look at this situation, dissect it and learn form it, no matter how painful and aweful, or we can sweep this misery under the carpet and not learn a thing and continue the cycle. Your choice.

Suicide is real, get to dealing with it instead of shaming it and we can actually save a life or two.

Everyone making fun of this situation is wrong. Someone died here and you are laughing about it. This is not at all a joke. I knew Hunter and he was a nice, funny person just like millions of other peope in this messed up world. So, instead of poking fun at his father and making jokes about the school, think about how his father and his sister feel. Think about how his friends feel. It has now been a year and last night all those "heroin addicts" cried at a service in remembrance of him.

The DAD and a therapist were on Good Morning America. The gun issue is not clear. However. For $50,000 a year you would think a school could get a kid the help they were supposed to get him. The therapist said that as for being a bully, the kid he pushed around gave a eulogy at the bully's funeral. All the dead kid did was cartoons. The school is a little warped.

You kids that cursed the bully must be pretty sensitive.

You can get expelled simply for being a bully? That doesn't help anyone. The victims never learn to stand up for themselves and the bully never gets the shit beat out of him (important life lesson).

Geez, kids are such pussies these days. And school administrators (as a group) are a pack of spineless cowards.

I wonder if his Dad is a real iceberg. Although I know a lot of parents who don't care about their kids. REALLY lazy, indifferent parents don't spring for $50,000 or $75,000 a year schools. They just send the kids to public schools on cold cereal for as many meals as possible.

The kid could have been headed to Harvard for goodness sakes.

This story was in the Boston Globe a lot. There were like five photos this bully and two other kids put bubbles on with jokes. In just this one event against the victim.

I wonder about the gun and more, why the school didn't get the guy help.

They burned witches up there.

All you "fishy" fools up above, wise up.

First, haven't heard of a lawsuit. Where are the deadbeats you frustrated insurance adjusters were looking for? People get hurt, then they are bums if they sue and no comment if they don't. Or maybe we can speculate about rotten facts about them that kept them from trying to collect.

Second, before anyone gets ideas, the police thoroughly investigate shooting deaths. So the Dad had to be pretty slick to fake a firearm suicide.

Third, Which of your families can afford a $50 large private school? Hands..anyone?

This has nothing to do with bullying. The fact that he tormented some kid about their sexuality is irrelevant. He was psychologically troubled, and he killed himself. The article seems to suggest that things would be better had he not been reprimanded for his bullying. The two issues are separate.

It sounds like you are super self-conscious about something. For some reason you seem to want to insist that a person could never have any influence or responsibility related to bullying a 16 year old to suicide. That's random...

Ding! This thread is a prototype for idiots spouting when they have no idea.

Patch in a stereotype on a rich, unavailable parent.

How about the woman in Sandy Hook? Was she unavailable? If this kid was yours you would probably be at room temperature right now with a few slugs the coroner didn't find.

Maybe the kid had perfect scores on the No Va gifted tests and was messing up in public school and at home. So Dad popped the tuition and a fat contribution for a kid nobody could really work with.

Try mental illness --- just different from the one you have.

Here's the thing, Groton is a rigorous academic school, not a therapeutic school. It is a place for kids to get a first-rate education, not to "get the help they need." Too many parents send their troubled kids off to boarding schools, when really they should be looking into a increased mental health services or a therapeutic placement. I am personally aware of boy the boy and the school, and I can tell you that the family was very troubled. Hunter was for the most part a nice kid, But there are a couple of rather shocking details that have not come out that make the family situation look much more grim. As far as the school goes, they do hold the kids to very high expectations of behavior, but that is made clear right from the start to parents and kids.

I believe from the OP that Hunter's dad did care very much about his son's welfare and did the very best he could for him.

"Ohmygoodness" brings realistic perspective to the situation.

Groton has a mentality though that is prevelent in most schools these days including public schools . I seriously doubt that Groton was unaware of hunter's mental issues when they accepted his application and the tuition so I don't give the school a complete pass on liability.

Now look, if our society is going to allow such strict policy by schools, it should also mandate an orientation class stressing the do's and don'ts or else, for parents, children and teacher's.

This business for example of kicking 6yr olds out of school for pointing their finger like a gun is partly the reason for the disturbed minds of many children these days.

Parents simply can't control the mental health of their children because no matter how much love, support, and discipline they dish at home, they are exposed to the general mental illness of society at school. Mental illness is more contagious than the flu.

The more liberalism, the more oppression, the fewer opportunities, the more frustration, anger, and death.

My condolences to The Perkins Family and to Mr. Perkins, as difficult as it is right now, I hope you'll be good to yourself because you showed strong character sending your son to a school that you thought would increase his chances of a good life in this obscene environment that can no longer be called "the land of the free and home of the brave". May God bless you Mr. Perkins and Hunter's sister.
