it would be a bittersweet victory though as they will get no train tracks at all. they are very correct in that a study for a tunneled system would be expensive. additionally, i dont think people realize the insane cost of tunneling. i think at the time of the aerial track they thought it would look cool and futuristic or something lame. it would be cheaper to wipe out some houses/buildings and put the thing on the ground and make a small underpass for roads and such.

I live a few blocks from one of the "proposed" Tyson stations, and have always advocated the 'tunnel' option. But let's get serious, it isn't happening. So my attitude now is: BUILD THE FUCKING THING ALREADY. Let's move the fuckin issue off the table and see some progress. Jeez, it's only been like ten years of fruitless discussion, just do it.

Someone needs to take the lead and replace all those "TysonsTunnel" signs with signs that read "BUILD THAT FUCKING THING. NOW!" Then maybe we'll get to see it within our lifetimes.

Anybody who advocates building an elevated track instead of a tunnel needs to spend some time in New York or Chicago to see how elevated tracks are not only ugly, but they create huge swaths of economically depressed real estate. If you want to turn Tysons Corner into the fugly asshole of Northern Virginia just so some people in Sterling can get to their jobs in DC, I say go for it.

Lets face it, there's nothing pretty about Tysons Corner as it is. What's an elevated railway going to hurt. Besides, it'll give the grafitti artists a nice platform by which to express themselves...

I wouldn't mind giving my backyard up for an elevated metro track.

Face it you fools. metro is not coming to Tyson's Corner. The tree huggers ruined the chances. They are so self centered that an elevated track is not an option for these millionaires. Appearance is everything to them. I just hope they didn't fool you with their delusions of greatness and grander.

as a passenger.. i would prefer driving.

as a person who picks up passengers - they need a metro. and its not because i dont want to drive and pick them up.. its the fact that you get there and have to circle the airport until theyre out the door.. (although i cut through to the back and park somewhere to nap)

also: people who work near a metro would love it.. leave their car @ work for free (or even at the metro for next to nothing compared to airports) and take the metro out..

I would, I think Dulles is absolutely horrible to get in out of with a car. Some of those economy lots are a real pain in the ass to get to, they're like a 10 minute shuttle ride away. I landed there a few weeks ago at 9PM, a bunch of flights must have landed at the same time, so you had to wait in line for a shuttle. And then there was a hug line of cars to get out of the lot, that took another 20-25 minutes, I was ready to lose my cool. I'll never park in those economy lots ever again. That's why I normally try to fly out of National, it's very convenient to use Metro to get there.

The JFK Airtrain in NYC is the best improvement to mass transit in NYC in years. I'd love to see a Metro to Dulles. Who wants to park at the airport?

Are you talking about that Long Island Express thing? Because to get from Manhattan to JFK is kinda lame, since its in Queens. I remember taking the regular subway, then maybe hopping on some other train that pulled right up to the airport. If I recall, this train was much nicer/more comfortable/convenient than Metro. It was more like a mini-Amtrak but with VERY cheap tickets. I would support a rail to Dulles, but a bunch of people with bags might make it a mess. Metro will never live up to the NYC subway. Sure Metro is cleaner and NY has its share of problems but they just seem to be ahead of us.

The Metro can be improved but it is a pretty nice system as they go. Usage out of Reagan looks pretty popular to me. Are the numbers there? If a rail to Dulles could pull significant numbers of people off the roads and onto public transportation it sure would be a Godsend.

Metro was designed to get people in and out of DC and the major employment centers. The NYC subway is designed to get people from point A to point B. Actually, these are two very different concepts.

If the purple line comes through ( a line that would pretty much circle the beltway) then maybe metro would be more "other than commuter" friendly.

The silver line would be great for Tysons. Hopefully there'd be less people driving. Traffic there makes me want to pull my hair out.

The plan was to have an area like Ballston. They can't really achieve that if metro is an elevated rail.
