New to town

My wife and I will be moving to Fairfax from South Carolina sometime before January. Can anyone reccomend good neighborhoods, apartments or townhouses. She has a library job and I will be leaving my tech job. So if you know of any technology work for me that would be great too.

"tech" is kinda a vague word - there are "tech" jobs all over Fairfax (and nearby counties). Depending on the "tech" you do, you should have no problem finding a job.

BTW, it's usually better to find the new job BEFORE quitting the old one...

fairfax underground is hiring someone to create computerized trolls that are very well-mannered, inexplicit and nonjudgmental.

FYI, most of the responses you get here will lead you to believe you're moving into a neighborhood full of mental patients.

Let's see. On a Librarian's salary? Take your pick...

There's this "fixer upper" in Annandale for $600K...

Or this "handyman's dream" in Herndon for $545K...

I know several people who were high level folks during the Tech boom who have had to resort to this kind of thing in recent years. IT is one area where once you hit your mid-40s, you are fucked.

Moving to Fairfax is a nebulous phrase. Its like saying we're moving to Los Angeles. Its a big area, so its kinda useless to provide any commentary unless we know 1) where your job is, 2) what you can afford, 3) if you have transportation, 4) if you have kids, 5) if you like used condoms and syringes on your doorstep, and 6) etc.

The top salary for a librarian seems to be about $50K. What can you get in Fairfax for $50K that doesn't involve you selling crack or your vagina on the side?

You should do some more research. That is the top salary for a Librarian with NO experience. Some in the system make over a $100K.

I did some research. That's what it came back with. I'm assuming she doesn't have a doctorate in library sciences, or whatever.

Depends on the library? School librarian? FFX Public library librarian? Librarian for the General District Court? Law librarian?

Last time we had an opening at our law library, the pay was in the $65 - $85k range depending on education and experience

Traffic is a little tough at the 50/28 bottleneck for the South Riding commute, plus that is actually Loudoun county. Once 50 is widened it will be a little better since home building has slowed out that way.

Reston and Chantilly are both nice.

I'd stay away from Clifton. Based on the threads being posted here there are a lot of whack jobs and hate going on there. I hear the soil has asbestos, the school is being closed, the water is contaminated, and there is nuclear waste buried in the town and surrounding countryside.

It pays to have lived in the same single-family home for a couple decades - that's about the cost of my mortgage (not counting tax/insurance).

Be prepared to be shocked by the cost of living here. We have some friends in SC who are just totally uncomfortable here when they visit.

If you insist on living in Fairfax, I'd highly recommend living in the western part of the County (like Centreville or Chantilly). I think you'll like it more in western Prince William or Fauquier County though.

Centreville isn't bad. Not sure if you have children that are of school age, though. As it stands, most of the Centreville schools have about 1/3 of their population comprised of the children of illegal immigrants. Most of these children are on the "free and reduced" meal plans, too.

I'd bite the bullet and move further out. Get connected with a van pool if you need to. You'll end up providing your children with a better education and you won't get too aggrivated by seeing the lines of day laborers in common sections of the community congregating in hopes to find work for the day.

Aside - the day laborers congregating to try to find work are the good guys - it's the ones who go around drinking, robbing, participating in general mayhem who are the bad guys.

Sorry, but no one with a “high level†IT job would ever have to resort to working at Geek Squad. Especially not one who got started in the “Tech Boom†(meaning mid-late 90s) who should have 10+ years of experience. Additionally, in IT your mid 40s to early 50s are your prime earning years. In short, you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about and/or the people you know in IT are idiots.

People in their 40s or 50s are too expensive. Now, it's possible that the people I know were idiots. But the fact is you don't see a lot of 50+ IT guys walking around companies. Am I wrong?

In short yes. Too expensive for what? For who? Companies pay for experience and expertise. You will not find that in young folks. You also have to realize that there are tons of companies where ALL THEY DO is IT. I’m not talking about the IT guy working at some random office fixing the secretaries workstation. I’m talking about large IT oriented companies. You don’t think there are any 40-50 year old IT professionals working at Google or Microsoft for example? Of course there are, and they are getting paid bank.

Let me try a serious answer.

If you will be communiting into DC, you don't want to be too far outside the Beltway (inside the Beltway is best). However, inside the Beltway is expensive and you must settle for a small/older home. I would look in Shirlington and DelRay. You'll get smaller older homes in so-so neighborhoods with small lots and virtauly no backyards. Townhomes in Alexandria are a good option. Your'll pay $500K for a townhome in a decent area.

You should also look at Kingstowne, which is further out but technically in Aleaxandria (Fairfax co). Nice neighborhood, shopping, decent schools but a commute into the city.

Burke and Fairfax (and Parts of Springfield) can also be nice bt the commute gets longer. If you have flexibility in your commuting schedule you could look in Fairfax, Centerville, Vienna, Oakton. Loudoun Co is a bitch of a commute into DC.

I think you are right. We have lots of 50-60 year old former IT guys driving school buses (as one of their jobS). They couldn't have all been incompetent. They got whacked because of their age, pure and simple.

I feel sorry for them, but there has been an upside for me. I have never owned a computer until lately (couldn't afford one). One of the bus drivers built me a system out of junk parts and it works great! He brought it over, set it up and didn't charge me a dime.

IT guys: invest your money wisely because todays IT whiz kids are tomorrow's bus drivers.

You might try posting your request on dcurbanmom.com .

I would recommend you looking further in toward DC ("inside the beltway").

However, if you like that southern-esque vibe, further out might work better for you. I am from the North and prefer a Northern-esque vibe. If you are not tracking.....definately move as far away from DC as you can!

Good Luck!

If they had a career in IT, and are now driving school buses, in this area, the silicon valley of the east, then yes, I would say they are incompetent, regardless of age. That or they didn't really have much of a career to begin with.

I'm just getting through the first few responses. Thanks for the laughs and useful info.

Yes, the cost of living is 5 times what we have in SC, but just because a mental asylum has cheap rooms doesn't mean I want to stay there.

My wife has a great opportunity and my job is very portable. I'm a MSCE systems engineer in the legal and medical fields. We are eclectic with no children and a slightly above average income earning potential.

She will work in Fairfax City. I may end up in DC for my job.

We need an apartment until we get a good feel for the area. We can do about $2,000 a month until I start working.

We have lived in rural and large metro areas, comfortable with both.

Sorry for the vagaries, but we don't want to put it all out there.

Based on this, I would avoid suggestions to move "further out". If you're able to pay $2,000 in rent, I'd suggest looking around Vienna and Merrifield. Your wife will have an easier reverse-commute into FFX City, and you'll also be in a nice area that has direct access to Metro (essential for you getting into DC).

I'd be worried if I was a librarian, a public librarian anyhow.

City/County budgets are going to be fucked for the rest of the decade at least, maybe permanently. Public libraries will be one of the first things to go. They're already cutting down the operating hours.

Thanks Meeper. Warhawk, as I typed our description it did ring of hipster douchebag. Were a tad older than that and I can't grow an ironic beard.

You are wrong and everyone you have ever known is a fucking moron. Fuck you, and experience is obviously only helpful to one's career.

And whoever started this thread. Move to Centreville, send your kids to Westfield, if you even have kids. It is the best school around, even though all the dipshit asshole parents and students from dirtier, less academic public schools like chantilly, centreville, or fairfax. Westfield is so big that obviously there will be bad kids, but for the most part they all left in 09. It will be the best school in the upcoming years without a doubt.

What's so mental about SC? We're not mental in FFX.

No harm intended. I was under the influence a little bit last night when I posted that. BTW - Meeper's locale suggestion is really good.

If you are ecclectic, have money and no kids, you might want to consider Arlington.

While "realtor's" post was rather humorous, I would avoind said areas at any cost -- unless you cannot afford anything else.

If your wife is working in Fairfax City why not live in Fairfax City? It's eclectic and close enough to the Viena metro if you end up commuting to DC. Vienna would also be a good area. Very desirable. If you want quieter, less hustle and bustle try Burke. Easy to get to FX City and you have the VRE if you commute to DC.
