Define dangerous breed. That could be all dogs. So just start shooting all dogs then? And if someone steals a loaf of bread from a store, you'd shoot them? You are showing a scary lack of any common sense, self restraint, and any cerebral activity whatsoever. I'm starting to wonder why I support the 2nd amendment-you are not someone who should have a firearm, due to that level of irresponsibility.

Pull your self-righteous head out of your ass.

When have I once said we should shoot ALL dogs? There are certain breeds of dogs (pit bulls, rots, etc.) that are statistically speaking much more likely to attack humans compared to other breeds. Those are the ones you ban. And you don't have to shoot them all, just not allow them to be brought into the county to begin with.

According to the WHO, an average of 54 people die from bee stings in the united states annually. According to the CDC, only 16 die from dog attacks. 16 fucking people. Get a fucking grip, you whiny, snot-nosed helicopter parent.

How many just get mauled/bitten and don't die?

You wouldn't be saying that if your kid got mauled by a pit bull.

Oh its that easy. You must be a Gerry Connolly fan. Let's get the government to protect us. You make me now want to go buy a few pitbulls now. The stats don't lie, their breed on numerous sources, shows Pits among the BEST with children, the BEST temperments, the best trainable. The only issue is their dog aggression, which well, holy shit, a lot of breeds have. Take them out to.

Let's get the government to get rid of these dogs immediately gestapo style. Who gives a shit about the high gas prices, the economy in the shitter, the national debt? Pitbulls are a threat, the last time I checked they don't fucking put planes into buildings, or blow themselves up.

Probably the tip of the iceberg. Just like Labradors, Rotties, German Shepherds, and other dogs. Get both branches of Congress to get on this immediately, and get legislation to the President immediately. To heck with the national debt, the gas prices, the unemployment, the threat of terrorism.

Oh my goodness a white man attacked me tonight. That must mean all of them are dangerous. Let's shoot them all! LOL :)

Effing perfectly put. It's like the bats want to GIVE their freedom away. Don't like pits, don't come to my house. My bullies are the most loyal, obedient companions i could ask for.

Why do people want to regulate everything that doesn't matter while our politicians rob us blind. We live in a cleptocracy and strangers are worried about my house pet.

JBass, as stated, its unbelievable what this thread has become, although its not as fucked up as some others. Yet what it comes down to, and there's no denying there have been cases of attacks, tragedies, but is proper ownership, responsibility, training, socialization.

For so many to insinuate that Pit Bulls are horrible dogs, and there should be even more laws on the books is preposterous. The three Jack Russell's that bit my ankles, now there's a breed that I would like to get rid of. My ankles hurt LOL.

all I know are the numbers

Report: U.S. Dog Bite Fatalities January 2006
to December 2008

A 2009 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that 19 dog breeds contributed to 88 deaths in a recent 3-year period. Pit bulls accounted for 59% followed by rottweilers with 14%.

Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59% (52). This is equivalent to a pit bull killing a U.S. citizen every 21 days during this 3-year period.
The data also shows that pit bulls commit the vast majority of off-property attacks that result in death. Only 18% (16) of the attacks occurred off owner property, yet pit bulls were responsible for 81% (13).

http://www.dogsbite.org/dogsbite-newsroom-2009-dogsbite-three-year-fatality-study.php

you tell me about "proper ownership, training, blah blah blah" but c'mon........I shouldnt have to be the one to have to worry about that cause I dont own a Pit.........yet I'd have to be the one dealing with the consequences if a Pit attacked my kid in a playground. I mean, WTF logic is that?

Jack Russells may attack, yes....................but they usually arent the breed invovled in quotes like this:

She noted that six senior citizens were killed under these circumstances: "Two were killed while standing in their own backyard," she said. "Four others were killed while taking a morning walk or getting the mail."

Which breed do you think they are talking about in that paragraph? Aint Chihuahua, ok?

Okay Gordon, I guess you want to round up the Pitbull's and other aggressive dogs. I wish you well, maybe Congress can get this on their schedule ASAP, over everything else, because I'm going to be also not able to sleep tonight, due to the fear of pitbulls and irresponsible owners running the streets of Fairfax, terrorizing it in every possible way. :)

I hope you can laugh at that. Yes, pitbulls when they do attack, no doubt, it can lead to injury or death. So can a Rottie, GSD, Doberman, Akita, we could go all day with other breeds. As a young buck, I had to kick a labrador attacking me. Yup, the dog I hunt with and love, had to get knocked back. And rightfully so, it was me getting bitten, or having to defend myself from that dog for whatever reason went "psycho."

Anyhow, what do you suggest? Pitbulls like firearms are here to stay. Do I think some pitbull owners are insane? Most definately! In fact, they are the reason this breed has such a bad rep. Its not the dog, its the asshole that treats them like shit, punishes them, or doesn't properly socialize it per its working dog characteristics. That's the problem. Its just like a gun. A gun sitting by itself won't hurt anyone. Not a soul. Yet in the hands of a shit head or irresponsible person, same deal.

Yeah Gordon, Your argument about Jack Russels biting but being less lethal may be true but I would argue SUVs are more likely to kill you in an accident than a Mini. Should we ban SUVs too?

you know what, JBass? You cant take an SUV on a playground where my kids play. SUV's arent allowed to roam wild on the sidewalks either. So that's kinda already handled, I'd say ;)

NRA - no, what I want is for ppl who CHOOSE to own breeds that are proven to be dangerous (i.e. create more injuries or fatalities than others) to be held to a DAMN HIGHER STANDARD. That means a special license if you wanna own an animal in a RESIDENTIAL neighborhood that has jaws like a vicegrip, yo. That means if , God forbid, something happens, we can trace the animal to an owner and that owner is held responsible.

How many ppl compare pit bulls to guns? That's a scary comparison..............

cause at least if yr carrying legal in the park, you've more than likely got yr shit together, no matter how much I dont have to like it.

But with a Pit owner.............................well, sometimes the owner cant control the dog.........like on Tuesday, for instance

Well Pitts arent 'allowed' to roam free, either.

Thats not the point. You are saying that if a certain type of an item is more dangerous than another, we should eradicate the more dangerous of the two.

So lets get rid of SUVs and elderly drivers

Re: Pit bull owners are Insane

I mean, this is real life shit...........and I, as a parent that doesnt own a pit..............I shouldnt be the one who has to deal with ppl who own them who, BY YOUR OWN WORDS "Do I think some pitbull owners are insane? Most definately! "

so you tell me why I shouldnt try to do anything I can to keep this animal away from my kids?

It scares me, and I feel that most ppl who own them are the type of person who would not really care that much if their dog killed my child in some sorta street confrontation. They/y'all seem to care more about ownership of the dog than safety of children. That's the vibe I get from every single pit owner I've ever talked to in my life, I am sorry to say :(

and it's really that attitude that comes off, that "pit owner" attitude, that's what gotta change, yo.

If you really want this issue to go away, that is.

JBass...............honestly, this is what we are kinda talking about when we say y'all are insane. Show me where I EVER said that "if a certain type of an item is more dangerous than another, we should eradicate the more dangerous of the two." cause my fingertips dont recall a-putting those words down...............

I think you should have to get a special license, special training, same as you'd need for like a CCW or a tiger or something. You love yr animal, get the training for it, that's all I'm saying.

p.s. - elderly drivers arent more dangerous, that's a myth, yo

http://www.iihs.org/research/qanda/older_people.html

they just are more likely to die in a crash cause they brittle.............no joke. However, Pit Bulls do tend to kill more than other breeds. Oh, I already posted this one, but what the hey :)

Gordon,

First of all, you make some valid points. Yet, I don't want more government regulation, when none is needed. Second of all, have you had a bad experience with a Pit Bull?

Years ago I got hit by another white guy. I'm Scotch, Irish, bit of German maybe. He could have been French, British, Croatian. Does that make him more dangerous? I dunno. Same thing with dogs as humans. Proper ownership-parenting. Environment, genetics, everything. Its a combo.

Now as back to the topic at hand, are some Pitbull owners losers and completely worthless, irresponsible pieces of shit? Yes. However, same goes for owners of other breeds, and just some peeps in general.

1. dont need more govt regulation IF owners handle their own business.
2. Nope.
3. Humans aint dogs. There's not such a thing as a different "breed" of human unless yr into stuff like Sorbibor :(

But back to the topic at hand: Irresponsible ppl and dangerous animals are something I'm not into combining. And sure not gonna be cool with the combination if my CHILDREN can be put at risk. Other breeds arent killing as much

and I'm sorry, but when I keep seeing a new fucking news story EACH TIME I GOOGLE THE SAME FUCKING THING

I don't understand why people feel it's the dog that is evil. Did you know that in WW1 there was a BULL TERRIOR MIX that was a hero to his unit? His name was Stubby and he heard a person in the trenches and didn't recognize the smell. He darted around the corner in the trench and bit the GERMAN SPY in the @$$. He saved his unit and was awarded a medal. He was a bull terrior. Which means the breed you feel needs to be destroyed actually served this country. I can't believe you'd rather see the end of one of God's creations than try to help it. It's not doing it themselved, people mold animals. Our pets are what we make them.

I'm sorry that you have such a harsh view. However I understand your concern, but in a "free country" we won't always get along. I don't understand how someone can have a specific breed so much... To the point that you'd rather see them exstinguished? Why? They didn't start out that way, they didn't start out how SOME are now. Humans have a greater affect on EVERYTHING than we realize. To look at a breed that needs help and say, "No, I'll just kill all of you off so I don't have to worry." Is sad.
Besides if you have a child and you take them to the playground, you should know that you will have to watch your child. I watch my cousins all the time. Pit Bulls are honestly the least of my worries. I'm worried they'll fall of the swing and crack their head open. Or a some pervert is out there and will kidnap them. I worry about things that I can't protect them from. A pit bull, heck, my cousins know not to run from dogs, that welcomes them to run after you. My cousins know that a big dog doesn't immediately translate to evil killing machine. And they sure as heck know that you don't judge an entire breed on what the media decides to highlight for flippin ratings!

ok, J.M. tell me how, as I'm watching my kid, how I am going to protect them from this?

You say yr cousins know blah blah blah about dogs. So what's that mean? That a kid who DOESNT know blah blah blha about dogs deserve to be attacked on a playground when confronted?

http://www.wmbfnews.com/story/16511117/new-legislation-inspired-by-pitbull-attack-victim

I..............and pay attention now, cause this is the part you really want to hear if you love Pits and seriously want this controversy to evolve to a new level.................I look at that kid's face and think to myself what you said about "heck, your cousins know blah blah blah" and realize that you would think that maybe if yr dog attacked my kid, that you would see it as somehow my kid's fault for maybe being scared and running?

And that right there, my friends, is where the argument ends. I hear that your dog's freedom has more rights than my kid's face does on a playground and I'm sorry but Aw HELLZ, no.

As a non dog owner, you dont have to know jack crap about dogs. IT IS THE DOG OWNERS RESPONSIBILITY TO HANDLE THEIR ANIMAL AT ALL ALL size> ALL size> FUCKING ALL size>TIMES when in public!!! GET THAT THRU YOUR GOD DAMNED SKULLS!!!!!

Dont care what breed it is, either. But numbers dont lie.......

http://www.dogsbite.org/dogsbite-newsroom-2009-dogsbite-three-year-fatality-study.php

if pit owners dont get this, then I'm sorry but the breed is GOING to pay the price for this continued ignorance and non-caring attitude on the issue.

reason why? Y'all can dance around it all you want, but ppl fear yr breed, and have numbers to back it up. You dont want to own up to the fact the dog is more dangerous, fine. All I know is what the numbers tell me and the fact that every SINGLE time I talk to a pit owner, I get the same vibe - that their dog is more important than my kid's safety :(

and it's not just a dogbite that worries me...........it's the SEVERITY of injuries that the dog is capable of doing, that's what worries me.

p.s. if you have to compare yr dog to a kidnapping pervert in an debate, you kinda already lost the argument, yo. Just saying....................

p.p.s sorry on coming down harsh - that kid's face really fucked me up there, m'man.

look, the dogs are dangerous. Some love that about them. I get that. All I'm saying is that we gotta acknowledge there's a danger and do something about it. I'd personally like a special license for one, like you would for anything dangerous (like an SUV, a gun, or wild animal, all 3 things that Pits have been compared to BY PIT LOVERS on this thread alone) and of course I'd like to see real penalties for ANY dog owner who cannot handle their animal properly and it results in injury to a child.

and I'm sick and tired of the bullshit and runaround I get on the issue, that's as real as a heart attack.

You don't need a license for a firearm Gordon. :). And this issue, there are already more than enough laws on the books, although I would agree with you that the criminal penalties of negligence regarding pets/animals, should have higher fines/jail time, etc. Call it the "Clay Compromise" of sorts. In civil courts, there are also of course, due to a lower threshold of guilt, high fines to be paid also.

Some people shouldn't have children or dogs, or hamsters for that matter, but they will. But do you really want the government, already way too big, throwing out more laws when they are already on the books, and to punish just one breed? Serious PB's are awesome dogs, in the hands of a good person, and a house of love. In the opposite, of course, just like humans, they can be turned into monsters, and sadly you have shown documented cases where this has happened. No doubt about it.

Just just acknowledge what everyone knows about owners of pit bulls:

Overwhelmingly black or Hispanic from the hood (or white trailer trash)
Usually have tattoos on their necks
Have long rap sheet
Lower income bracket
Would try to shoot you if you look at them the wrong way

Pits are a status symbol in the hood. To be considered a real thug you need these:

Pitbull to protect your turf
Gold grills in your teeth
Numerous guns
Impregnated at least 8 hoodrats and deny fatherhood
Numerous stints in prison
Be a gang member

That's the way it is with pitbulls and rots.

They can go for years with no problems at all and then something in their brain just snaps for no apparent reason and they try to rip your throat out.

@Crazy - I'm like a broken clock - yeah I'm not good for much, but I am gonna be right twice a day :)
@NRA - that's not true across the line in NC, but yeah, yr right about that. Still I'd rather trust someone with the open-carry than walking a pitbull they may lose control off

http://www.wrcbtv.com/story/17323962/neighbors-speak-after-pit-bull-attacks-6-year-old-girl

@jarhead - fuck you. cause you would be the type to tell me that the little girl in that link above should have known better. She wasnt trying to break in that house, so what's up with that? Sick and tired of you types telling me I'm dumb for being concerned about this, and wanting something done that stops these dogs from attacking children like this

http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Pitbull-Attack-Toddler--144306945.html

thats just the children attacked (not trying to break into any houses, Mr Zimmerman) in the last couple of weeks or so...............

so if yr telling me the answer to this issue is "I'm stupid and the dogs are fine" then my answer is "Sorry, but when they start talking about banning the breed, then I'm gonna vote that way".

interesting quotes that describe how I see most pit owners
(tell me if I'm wrong)

1) Sunday afternoon a knock on the door of the South "J" Street house where the incident happened went unanswered. Later, after a TV news report was broadcast, group of people emerged from the house and berated the news crew for its coverage, disputing the police account of multiple bites, insisting the child had been bitten only once.
- this is the same child that, according to the story "was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with severe but not life-threatening face wounds.".............all from one bite, apparently. Tell me I shouldnt be concerned about a dog that could do that from one bite o_0

2)Almazan took Channel 3 inside her apartment to meet her three Pitbulls and showed us how close they were by putting a biscuit in her mouth and inviting the dogs to "gently" take it from her.

She blames the neighbor across the street for the attack. She claims he beat Mack with a fly swatter.

"He would not have bitten the little girl if it hadn't been for him," says Almazan.

- this is the owner of a dog that lept out an open door to attack a 6 yr old girl walking and got, for her trouble "puncture wounds and bite marks on her right arm, her stomach and her right upper thigh," says Cleveland Police Spokeswoman Evie West. So apparently I should be could with the possiblity my kids could walk by a house and all of a suddem get puncture wounds from your "close, gentle" animal......................and I'm sorry that dont make no damn sense at all.

Gordon, the world is a dangerous place, carry a bat or a gun. The reality is that your family is way more likely to be the victim of a human on human crime than a k9 attack. Lets worry about the big stuff and let the individual worry about their house pets.

Gordon,

I think you are bright, but I think this is getting a bit out of hand, unless for one reason. Have you personally been affected by a pitbull? (ie.attacked viciously, or have a child, loved one that has?)

No one disagrees with you, that these dogs, can be dangerous. So can other breeds, like I mentioned before, the GSD and Rottie are far more.(Stats of biting and PSI strength). Not to mention Akitas, and a large amount of other breeds, with some dogs(true, not to the strength or aggression of PB's, such as Cocker Spaniel's more likely to bite).

Just curious, what has led to this almost Pogrom against PB's? Funniest thing ever. I used to live in Arlington, and there was a PB named Scarface. Probably not the best name, big SOB he was. Anyhow, Scarface used to intimidate people regularly by his looks. I got to know the owner(very responsible) and Scarface(best behaved dog there). Anyhow, Scarface was there every single night, never showed aggression, and actually stepped in the middle like a referee to keep other dogs from fighting.

No really. I will say the only time I've really ever been "surprised" by the intent of an animal it was a Pit. But no, my reaction time was quick enough that I cannot say I was attacked. But none of that really has anything to do with my ranting on this thread I simply know I dont want what I see on the TV to happen to my kids (i.e. they are out minding their own business and THIS happens

I hear that nobody disagrees with me. I hear that there are more dangerous things in life. What I DO NOT HEAR from pit owners......what I am asking for, and NOT GETTING are any answers to what should be done to protect ANY future attacks.

To be honest, it's not the dog that's so frustrating, it's the attitude of pit owners. I like you, NRA - yet you have the same attitude. You say I'm on some "pogrom" and all I'm asking for are some answers from those who own the dog, is all.

Only answers I've gotten from y'all/them is "screw you and yr kids"

So tell me why I should change my mind about the breed then?

I guess we just gotta agree to disagree.............which is COMPLETELY and UNILATERALLY unexceptionable to me when it comes to the safety of my children, you see................

Ok you got it allow wrong ...pit bulls aren't mean unless you train them that way I own a male pit bull and he is the sweetest thing. It's all in how u raise them. I totally dis agree. My brother also owns a pit bull along with a lot of friends and non of them are mean. Again it's all in how u raise them. So before you start making all your story on here on how bad they Are try having one and raise one. Mine turned out amazing as did all the other ones I've seen. So u should get ur faxs right. Pit bull are trained to kill and those owners who do that should be the ones to blame not the dog. It's like any dog or human how the turn out in life is how there raised. So before you start a story on how bad they are get ur faxs right . I makes me so mad when ppl start putting stuff on here bout pit bulls. There amazing dogs if you treat them with love and respect . Trust me I would know seeing as I own one !!!!!!!

you know something, NRA - I look at the wiki-link you gave me, and what it tells me is:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published in 2000 a study on dog bite-related fatalities (DBRF) that covered the years 1979-1998. The study found reports of 327 people killed by dogs over the 20-year period. Using newspaper articles, the CDC was able to obtain breed "identifications" for 238 of the 327 cases of fatal dog attacks; of which "pit bull terrier" or mixes thereof were reportedly involved in 76 cases. The breed with the next-highest number of attributed fatalities was the Rottweiler and mixes thereof, with 44 fatalities.

What you've told me, bro is that if pit bulls and rotties were banned, that 76 people would still be A-FUCKING-LIVE!!
And if you cant see the "skew" in those number that YOU YOURSELF posted, then I'm sorry bro your kinda missing the reality of the situation here.
I remember when ATC's were real popular. Those 3-wheel off road trikes. They got banned too the year that like .1% of ALL the owners died on them.
http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/105/6/1352.full
(DEFINATELY a tl/dr link so you may just wanna trust me on this one LoLz)
And yeah, sure ppl die a lot in other forms of transportation, but sure as fuck not .1% of all of them!!!!
Just telling me that other dogs are capable of injury or worse, that's just great. But my man - WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE REALITY THAT THESE MORE AGGRESSIVE ANIMALS INJURE AND KILL MORE PEOPLE THAN OTHER BREEDS!!
And this is why I advocate a special license for these breeds. There's a serious problem and I want it fixed, is all

@Tami - I get that you love yr dog. Believe me I understand that. This is why I'm asking you for answers cause if you love yr dog, you've eventually have to start placating ppl like me who are AFRAID of you and your dog and are sick and tired of living in fear of them.
Why I say I am afraid of you and your dog:
because when you talk about how your dog was raised with love and how it's never been aggressive or anything, I think about this...

and wonder how, if your loving animal could do that to you and yours, what it would do to me and mine.............cause I read the last line of this news story and I see how you would treat me if I was your neighbor and your loving dogs attacked me

http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Arlington-Dog-Owner-Faces-Charges-in-Pit-Bull-Attack-92831694.html

so tell me, how should I feel when you tell me that you have loving pits you've raised since a pup that have never attacked anyone before........tell me how I should feel when I've heard this before:

It is not the breed itself. Its the person who raises the dog. Yes, pitbulls are known to be brought up as fighting dog, but if people weren't sick and brought up the dog properly, then this wouldnt be a problem. My dog is a pitbull and is the sweetest dog you could ever meet. Not once in its life has it been violent. The breed shouldnt be put to an end, the people who raise them nasty should be. If you raise your kid to be a killer it will turn into one. Same goes if you raise your dog to be one. So putting an end to pitbulls? How about NO.

Should we kill ourselves off as well?
Let's not be stupid people.
Shit happens and it sucks.
Leave it be.
Raise your dogs right.
And if they still don't turn out?
You can raise a kid right and they may not turn out right either.
Doesn't mean you kill off a race or breed.

Gordon, first of all, my hats off to you, and there's no sarcasm. You have a passion for this issue, you have done some research, which is 99% better than what most do here. I think you bring up some good concerns too, but the main issue is ownership.

There are laws in the books. The key is strengthening them. You can't simply ban a breed. Its just like gun laws. Project Exile strengthened the teeth against criminals carrying firearms in VA. D.C.-there banning of guns, and now restrictions, well it hasn't worked to well. Perhaps not the best example, but still, its not proving more government action is required other than perhaps maybe a tweaking of the laws.

Would you be open to that? Again, its not the dog, its owners. That's what the origin of this thread is, and what it is about. Yet I do think your concerns are valid, and I do like PB's and most dogs. Yet aggressive ones, maybe a compromise would be strengthening criminal/civil penalties through the VA House of Delegates/State Senate. A lot of these cases are going to have to be handled by localities and states.

you are ignorant. ANY dog has the ability to bite a person/child at anytime. a dogs tempermant will be exactly what you make it. just like a child, how you raise will affect how it turns out. i own a pitbull rescue and have NEVER been bitten by any stray i have come across. However, i have been bitten by more little dogs a chocolate labs than ANY other dogs. I have never been bitten by a pitbull, rott, german shephard, or doberman. 100 years ago pitbulls were used a babysitters. It is only in the recent years of dog fighting that pitbulls have received a bad reputation. A dog has NO choice on how it is treated, raised, and with whom, just like children. My child has grown up with pitbulls and my pits are used a therapy dogs. So before you discriminate an entire breed on a few cases, why dont you read on how many unsuspecting breed have bitten people and realize it is the OWNERS who make their dogs aggressive, NOT the dog itself.

Wow! This is so wrong. Man you guys are way more mean than my pitbull! She's the sweetest thing ever an one of the best dogs me or my family have ever had! I was always raised to stay away from pits. My sister got one and she too is a very sweet girl. I then got my own and she's the best! Well sometimes she pee pees on my floor.... : ). My grandma was very sick for a while and ninnis refused to leave her side. Same with my sisters newborn. She licks his face to say hi, he giggles we thank her for the kisses and then she watches over him. She was there before us when my gma fell, and always knows whether the baby is about to be sad. I love my dog! Actually after having one, I think I would only ever want a pitbull for a dog. Guess I'm insane, but at least I have such a reliable, sweet and cuddly best friend!

As the responsible owner of a 4-year old American Pitbull Terrier, I would just like to say that:

1.) I am not "insane", "ghetto", "trailer trash" or a drug dealer;
2.) I do not "hover above the poverty line";
3.) I have not been "in and out of jail"; and
4.) my dog is not stupid or aggressive.

I am an upper-middle class, white woman with a college education and a steady job. I am not a deadbeat parent, have never been arrested, let alone in and out of jail, and I do not use or sell drugs.

The majority of the media reports regarding "pit bull attacks" are caused by the misidentification of the breed, based on looks alone. There are 20+ breeds of dog that can potentially be misidentified as a "pit bull". Hence why the majority of new reports refer to the dog as a "pit bull" rather than an American Pitbull Terrier.

My pitbull is smart, sweet and the big baby. Does he bark at people that walk by our home? Absolutely! Do I believe that he is capable of "mauling" someone without just reasoning? No. My 3-year old son and my pit are good friends, he sleeps in my 9-year old's room at night and he has never hurt a fly. He can turn off the lights on command and loves to be petted by any and everyone.

Ban the deed, not the breed.

A jack Russell Terrier almost mauled to death a baby in Culpeper VA. Thirty plus bites. Sorry Gordon Blvd but the dog was shot by the owner. Let's start more legislation, add JRs to the list of dogs to be banned, all immediately euthanized.

@Jack- i know you are a bit confused - so I will just point out I never talked about euthanizing all dogs.........

@everyone else - pls notice how the owner of the Jack killed the down what killed the child. Pls note when you hear the same story wit pit owners, they will more than likely be wanting the dog to be kept alive, and the dog will still be alive, taken into custody by the cops.

Not a sermon, just a thought...............

I admire your passion Gordon, but I think in this case, this forum at least, its being wasted. Have you considered writing to political officials, or lobbying? Just out of curiosity, have you spent time with an APBT? Yes there have been terrible events, tragedies, true devastation. Yet I've spent plenty of time with this breed, even mistreated ones, sweet wagging tails and no signs of aggression.

@ @Godon - read the thread I mention a time with one...........and yeah I'm beating a dead horse here. I was just asking about what pit-owners would suggest as options to banning the breed and havent heard really anything but "my puppy is adorable" which is fine and dandy for you, but since that's what they say about the pits when they attack, I kinda hoping for more. Doesnt look like I;ll get it, though.......................

.....I hate dogs, yet, I've never met a mean pit.....go figure, that cute lil dog, it bit me, that big friendly lab, bit me....never a pit though

Um, and I have kids, if they get bitten it's my fault for not teaching them not to touch strange dogs or for not watching them!!!!

If you don't want your kids to get bitten by a pit bull, teach them not to mess w/other peoples pets! You don't know, that golden retriever could have been hit by a kid too many times, it may be just as mean as one of those viscious pit bulls!

Get a grip! Its a dog! Your beagle is just as dangerous in the wrong hands!

1)- A mistreated pit bull----"Leo, rescued from Michael Vick's Bad Newz Kennels in Virginia, is now a therapy dog, visiting hospitals and helping to rehabilitate juvenile offenders."

2)- a family Lab------A 2-week-old baby died early Sunday after being attacked by the family's dog in northwest Harris County, authorities said.

The boy was in an infant carrier on the floor in a room of the house when the dog, a Labrador mix, began sniffing the baby and then mauling him.

His mother was outside the house, watching the baby through a window, said Thomas Gilliland, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The dog had been behind a pair of French doors but pushed through them before approaching the baby. No one else was in the room, Gilliland said.

Family members pulled the dog off and placed it in a kennel, authorities said.

National Canine Research Center-

"Official reports often do not agree with news accounts and/or contain important information that was either unavailable, or not of interest, to reporters at the time of the incident.

News reports published in the moment usually refer to the dogs involved as “family” dogs, implying that these were dogs whose owners interacted with them on a regular basis in positive and humane ways. Later investigation shows that most of the dogs involved in these incidents were “resident” dogs - victims of isolation, and often abuse or neglect. NCRC's preliminary findings for 2011 are consistent with findings concerning the dog bite-related fatalities of years past. In 2010, the news media initially described the dogs in 29 of 33 (88%) dog bite-related fatalities as “family” pets, but investigations disclose that only 7 (21%) were family pets.**"

US Dog Bite Statistics----
Nonfatal Dog Bite-Related Injuries Treated in Hospital Emergency Departments - United States, 2001

In 2003, the Center for Disease and Control (CDC) published a study that examines the frequency of dog bite-related injuries treated in U.S. emergency departments.

In 2001, an estimated 368,245 persons were treated in U.S. emergency rooms for nonfatal dog bite-related injuries.
42% of dog bites in 2001 occurred among children aged 14 years and younger; injury rates were highest among children aged 5-9 years and were significantly higher for boys than for girls

Which Dogs Bite? A Case-Control Study of Risk
Factors (1991)

In 1994, researchers released a study of "which dogs bite" based on 1991 Denver County dog bite data. Pit bulls are not included in the study. In 1989, Denver banned pit bulls.

Biters are 6.2 times as likely to be male than female
Biters are 2.6 times as likely to be intact than neutered
Biters are 2.8 times as likely to be chained as unchained
>>>>Notice, Pits were NOT INCLUDED<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

NOT a pit bull-----The recent description of an aggressive "fight dog" that bit a woman on the thigh and elbow in a Superior parking lot prompted many online comments at Denverpost.com.

"Anyone who owns a mutt from one of these killer breeds should be REQUIRED to have 100k in liability insurance," wrote one person. Another poster seethed about seeing more unleashed pit bulls without muzzles in public places: "I used to only carry a weapon to kill pit bulls in cities, and now the situation is only getting worse. Aggressive dogs should all be put down. Peace, Love, and Golden Retrievers!" Despite the fact that the article states very clearly that police listed the dog "as a mastiff or German shepherd mix," several other comments also mention pit bulls in reference to the attack.

Labs AGAIN!----
First off, let me say that I found it a bit odd that Langan used 2008 as the base year for 'pit bull' bites. It was mid year 2008 that the city passed their law, so 2007 would have been a more stable year.

That said, in 2008 there were a total of 808 dog bites in the city. So if 'pit bulls' made up 115 of them, they accounted for about 14% of total dog bites. Seems a bit ridiculous to pass a law targeting such a small total of dog bites. This means there were 693 bites by non 'pit bull' type dogs.

Meanwhile, in 2010, total dog bites rose to 913. If 'pit bulls' accounted for 42 of those bites, that means 871 bites were recorded by non-pit bull type dogs -- this is a 26% increase in non-pit bull bites since the year the law was passed.

So while Langan and NHS have been running around for the past 2 years focusing on enforcing the city's breed-specific ordinance (against breeds that accounted for 14% of the total dog bites in the city), all of the other types of dogs in the city have been involved in 26% more dog bites (nearly 200 total bites). And the largest biting breeds are not targeted breeds, and not small dogs. They're Labs and Shepherds which are both bigger breeds than any of the 'pit bull' type dogs and in spite of Labs' reputation for being cuddly dogs, it's also worth noting that Langan says that they "encounter a lot of serious bites from Labs". Labs and Shepherds were both in the top 3 of level 4 and level 5 bites for the 4 years leading up to the passing of the city's breed-specific law.

You should all research more......or just shut up

I've been attacked 2 times by dogs. If we banned those there would be a lot more families without golden retrievers, which I still love. Any dog can attack, and pits by nature are not aggressive towards people. I've had three and the closest they've gotten to biting are their really intense makeout sessions.

so right there - two children in the last month fucked up by these pits when they werent doing SHIT to the dogs. You know what would happen if ANY FUCKING THING IN THIS COUNTRY hurt kids like this?

But cause it's a dog, it's ok to let kids get injured.

Ok, so pit owners dont care. I get that now.

Pit bull owners contend that because they're dogs are cute and "sweet", gentle and loving they will turn a blind eye to a reality.

The most common defense there is: "I've been around pit bulls since my grandma was churning butter and I've never seen a pit bull act aggressively?"

It doesn't matter what you've seen - HERE'S THE EVIDENCE. Read any one of the posts by GordonBLVD, or just do a simple google search of pit bull attacks, or better yet do an image search.

Just because you've never seen something doesn't mean it can't happen. If you think that way, you're putting yourself in a box. Just think if that sweet pit bull you know and love attacked you or your family.

REGULATION - Just like you would need to go through the state if you wanted a boa constrictor, the same should apply for pit bulls. Accountability and responsibility, and then if the attacks continue, I'll rest my case.

This is asinine. Pit Bull attacks just get more attention. If I google search Dakoda Fanning, I will come up with hundreds of images and websites. Does that make her more or less of a human being than your average, run-of-the-mill butt tail?

Look at it like this... Just today, msnbc runs a nationwide piece about a pit bull attack in California. I also had a story populate my 'local news' section about a dog attack (Not a Pit) that happened in Olney, Maryland.

More press does not mean anything other than, you guessed it, more press.

Gordon Blvd, LOL. Yeah, I do have concerns about any animal, any breed without proper ownership. No doubt we agree on that. A Pitbull or Labrador, can be aggressive, the key is an owner that can maintain proper control.

For instance, based on its genetic tendencies, I would not have my older aunt walking a Hound type of dog, due to its strength, size, and chances of running off with my older aunt in tow.

Likewise, I would be fine with my brother handling such a dog, due to his ability to maintain control of such an animal, and being responsible. A lot of this is already taken care of with leash laws, civil courts, etc. More regs probably is not the best step, but I do agree with you, that owners are responsible for their dogs no matter what breed.

Pits and rocs will forever be associated with the ghetto, protecting your turf, and thugs, mexicans in the barrio, prison, etc. Almost every single time you see the dog owners on tv, they are usually from the hood or poor white trash.

You are likely not going to see a white family in the Hamptons with a brood of pits meeting their dinner guests at the door.

Hamptons has a Pit Rescue. And yes, their upper end brackets own these dogs. Although Portugese Water Dogs and French Poodles tend to be the pooch of choice in those parts.

yes its sad that people get attacked by dogs including pitbulls. Maybe you should be watching videos of how these animals are treated. Why dont you read up on your ghetto hero douche bag michael vick and read what he did to his dogs! people hurting animals is way worse and happens EVERY FUCKING DAY! its not a freak accident or rabid dog- humans are the root of all evil. IF you scared for your kids keep them away from ALL dogs if you truely believe they could be attacked. Im from the COUNTRY so everything is different here but i trust both my pitbull and american bulldog 100% i know they would never hurt anyone unless it was an extreme circumstance ie someone broke into my house and attacked me. but they are big love bugs and will let anyone in the house they only bark if they hear someone. and if i see a pit on the side of the road i open the car door and they jump in and if i can find there owners i find them new ones because i know what happens to these animals when they go to the "humane" society---DEATH. people should be more worried about the overall overpopulation of dogs and should be getting them spayed and nuetered along with there stupid ass selves---so keep your kids away from dogs and chop your nuts off ASSHOLE!

Ashlee we all know u are not the vet. You probably answer phones or some other assistant. I'm guessing you are fat and like black thugs just like every other person that works at a clinic that isn't a vet.

Pits are for black thugs and beaners who use them as both a status symbol and as a weapon against rivals because of their naturally aggressive behavior.
