Where's the best Chinese food in Fairfax County?
Posted by: chris ()
Date: October 21, 2010 11:37PM

There used to be this place in Springfield called Ding How (still there but changed management/menus about a year ago and not as good). It had been the same guy for almost 60 years and it was hands down the best chinese food I've ever had.

Now, I can't find anything that's really good and getting seriously tired of trying new places that suck. I've researched this all before and I think I know what names will likely come up but most of those have not impressed me. Perhaps the community has some other ideas? Where's the best anywhere in Fairfax County?

China King at Clocktower. Setting's not real nice but I've never had takeout better than that.

Is there a difference between that one and any of the others? (Sterling, Falls Church, etc.)

I've been going to Ding How for many many years. It was always greasy, good, and with large portions. The Egg Foo Young that I've always gotten there is still the same. The portions are actually a little bigger now. The young owners are very nice and will customize your order if you ask (ie, extra gravy on the EFY and pls. don't overcook). I still enjoy the place. The egg rolls there are probably the BEST I've had in the area.

My fav used to be Peking Village in MERRIFIELD, but it's long gone. Peking Village 2 in Fairfax is not affiliated with the closed one in Merrifield. The food I had there (kung pao chicken) was absolutely horrible. Don't bother.

The best I've found in the area since Peking Village closed is House of Fortune in McLean. The kung pao chicken there is excellent. They have a well known chef/owner now and the food is great. The staff is very friendly too. Two thumbs up.

I'm new to the area, but I really like Sampan Cafe in Franconia. I've only had the lo mein there, but every time I went it was only Asian people eating there, which I think is a good sign. Plus it's cheap.

I like these lately:

Peking Gourmet Inn (east end of Bailey's Crossroads)
China Delight (west end of Bailey's Crossroads)
A&J (Annandale) - dim sum, not what you probably expect
Best Fortune (Seven Corners) - dim sum

None of these compare favorably with:

Sampan Cafe is good in Franconia as someone previously mentioned.

House of Dynasty in Hayfield off of Telegraph Rd has always been good to dine in and take out.

There are my two cents.

I wouldn't go more than 3-4 miles for takeout.
I used to go to the Peking Express in Vienna on 123 across from the Urgent Care. They were good but expensive (low end dishes are 10 dollars plus).
As for Herndon/Reston, there are several on Spring Street off of Fairfax County Parkway. Chopsticks and Chen's Kitchen are much better than China King. China King is very cheap (5-6 dollars for regular dish, 12-13 for chef's specials).

If you're interested in authentic Szechuan cooking, Hong Kong Palace (despite the name, which the current owners never bothered to change from the prior Cantonese regime) in Seven Corners is outstanding and Sichuan Village in Chantilly (the menu, not the buffet) is also very good.

If you are out in the Centreville area my husband and I really like SINO's INN. Fantastic food for a decent price. In the City of Falls Church we like Hunan Cafe. I have to agree with Resident. Peking Village was awesome! I was kinda pissed to see it had closed.

Mark's Duck House - corner of Patrick Henry and Route 50 - best duck around, of course, but the rest of their dishes are consistently good day/night and weekend. They must have more than one main chef (the chef is THE reason to go to a Chinese restaurant (minimally - probably true for all good joints); if he/she leaves, the restaurant is nothing).

Peking Express is/was OK. Not terrific. What was a fantastic place was the place that preceded Serenity. They touted "organic" ingredients which I think meant an excuse to charge higher prices. But the food was very, very good. The crispy beef was cooked perfectly, the lemon chicken wasn't syrupy sweet, the stir fried vegetables did not taste oily.

It disappeared and was replaced by Serenity which we have not gone to - and are afraid to go to after having seen their first menu which looked like "authentic" Hunan Chinese.

Do you really want authentic SiChuan cooking? Eat some of it in Chengdu or Mianyang, and you will never recognize anything made in the USA...

I once took a 4-day blitzkrieg tour of Europe with a tour group from Taiwan (long story) - Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Netherlands.

In each country and for each main meal, we ate the exact same CHINESE menu.

Never again will I eat http://www.applepiepatispate.com/main-course/dongpo-rou-braised-pork-belly/

Lol!

Sure would have liked to munch some pasta or something in Italy (fave country).

[the food, albeit "chinese", was fairly uniform from country to country!]

Have you ever tried either of the places I mentioned? Certainly a lot more authentic than your typical kung pao joint. These places turn out some great stuff.

Depends on what you like, Chinese-wise. Hunan West in the Kings Park shopping center (Springfield) is very good for Chinese-American cooking (chow mein, General Tso's etc.). They also have a Thai selection that is not very Thai but surprisingly good.

China Star in Fair City is great for more authentic Chinese food - I swear by their chili chicken and tripe with peppers. Make sure to get the real Chinese menu.

Also, Spacy is right - - A&J in Annandale is great. They have fantastic dim sum type snacks - great for lunch.

I used to go there every weekend for dim sum, but they got extremely crowded -- too popular for their own good -- and the result was that the service became weird and rude, so I haven't been back for about a year.

Peking Village 2 served me the absolutely worst kung pao chicken I've ever had. I'm not sure what spices they are using...tasted like chili powder or something similar. I noticed the cook is Latino. Maybe he added some Latin flavor. They are not following the traditional Chinese recipe - that's for sure. If you enjoy PV2...EAT IT. I won't go back there again.

I'll stick to House of Fortune in McLean. Their Kung Pao chicken is second only to the original Peking Village in Merrifield. Theirs was incredible. I will check out some of the places mentioned in this thread too. Great thread! I do love my Americanized Chinese food.

Someone mentioned traditional Chinese food. A couple years ago a Chinese neighbor invited me to celebrate Chinese new year at a Chinese restaurant on Wilson Blvd. in Rosslyn. They served traditional Chinese fare. It was very different and very unappealing to me. Lots of fish. Lots of shell, bone, and scrap. Ewww. It was not good (to me). I'll stick to Americanized Chinese TY.

I agree with China King above me. The food is fantastic and you can't beat the price per amount. At some places, vegetables taste like they haven't been washed, sort of a pine sol pesticide flavor, but China King always tastes great. I don't know about the other locations, but at the Fairfax Towne Center location, it's cash or check only I believe.

Wong Kok is nothing special, despite the name. Kirin Cafe a block west on Elk Lick is much better. There's also a new place called Hunan Village in the new East Gate shopping center just east of South Riding that's good too.

Also, I will second Spacy's rec of Miu Kee. I ate there the night before I had surgery to fix a detached retina and they did a great job.

Yeah, lots of stars have been there, too. The pictures on the walls in the front entry are amazing. Plus, they have bullet-proof glass in the front of the restaurant, so you can eat in peace (no drive-by shootings to worry about from MS-13).

Peking Gourmet (Culmore) is the best--serious parking problems in a declining neighborhood, unfortunately.

Next best is Ho's Dynasty in Burke. Use for take out all the time. The best!

Asian Grill in Springfield, also, is an excellent choice for Chinese food.

You know...how many times have you been in Peking and seen more whites than Asians? Me personally, both times I have been there in my 46 years of life. They are OK for you Americans that dont know what AUTHENTIC Chinese food is.

100% Chinese here and they do not make my top 10 list.

We're in the USA. We like American Chinese food. Where did anybody ask about "authentic" Chinese food? You want stinky tofu? Go back to China.

Mark's Duck House has a large percentage asian clientele. Peter Pan, of all places, used to have a very large percentage asian clientele, though I believe that is changing. The original Fortune restaurant (not necessarily the existing one) was mostly asian clientele. There is/was a Peking duck place down in Tyson's off Route 7 under an office building - sorry, can't remember the name - that had an almost 100% asian clientele. Down in Crystal City in the USA Today building there is a Chinese restaurant, again can't remember the name, where the clientele was almost exclusively asian. And a number of years back at Tysons II there was a Chinese restaurant (alas, I believe it's gone now) that was mostly asian clientele.

In each case the food offerings ranged from American Chinese to for-sure-Chinese Chinese and was uniformly good from my experience - love that General Tso's, love those duck feet!

Title of thread asks about best "CHINESE" food, not Amercicanized Chinese food. For your Americanized Chinese food got P.F Changs.

I do travel to China at least 2 times a year, would you like to come with me?

Gack!

I went there with my to-be-wife; ordered three supposedly different dishes (I think shrimp, beef, veggie); they ALL came out with the same thick brown semi-bitter sauce.

Haven't been back.

Fortunately, my now-wife forgave that gaff...

My all-time favorite place to eat was at a little Ma-n-Pa pushcart vendor in Kaohsiung in front of a large temple - stir-fried ong-choy http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&q=ong+choy with lamb and hot peppers, sitting on dinky plastic stools at a fold-up dinky table while smelling the incense...at 2 in the morning.

Yum.

Interestingly, the same pair gave me one of the worst cases of strep throat I've ever had - stupid me had a glass of freshly-squeezed cold cane juice from the OTHER cart of the two (Ma and Pa carts...) - the squeezer was probably the PERFECT place for bacteria growth.

Don't eat cold food on the street unless your immune system is used to it.

Another delightful food item, same city, was grilled chicken butt - so much so that I learned how to ask for it myself and went to "the market" to get it alone - daring adventure! Gee peecoo la-duh how ma?

Should have noted (to be complete) that I visited this pair multiple times with a bro-in-law and only once ordered the cane juice - once was for sure enough - but the OTHER food was consistently delightfully delicious.

Instead of traveling across the big pond, NYC is another great option. And there are some very nice places over the county line in Arlington too.

Chef Huang has amazing food! Great pricing considering how much food they give you too!
Try the Kung pao chicken, fried rice, or really just about everything on the menu... have yet to get a bad meal there!

1. Magic Wok Springfield
2. Sino's Centreville
3. Nothing comes close to either

Sino's INN in centreville is amazing...They were the best in the 90's then went down hill a little, but as of 3 years ago they are back to greatness

THE BEST Chinese in all of the region is Magic Wok in Springfield, every single thing from their wonton soup, dumplings to every entree is abosolutely amazing. I am non biased on good Chinese and this is literally the best I've had outside of NYC. highly recomend you drive out there and try it.

No, can't beat home-made Chinese food, but look out for some kind of tofu that literally smells and taste like dirty stinky ass. It can ruin an otherwise, good meal.

There's a small restaurant in a strip mall on the corner of Braddock and Union Mill, it may be called China Express. While I can't comment too much about their regular fare, their roast duck rivals that sold by Mark's Duck House. Since Chian Express is on the way home from my spouse's work, the saving in mileage (like 40-50 miles round-trip) makes it a LOT less expensive than Mark's for duck. We just had it (a surprise) tonight - very good again.

Your right, their roast duck is pretty good. I had a dish that was a special (not on the every day menu) I think it was a crispy beef and another that is a seasonal thing with asparagus dish and they were both very tasty.

Well, gee, a good friend of my wife's just out of the blue brought over two different types of roast duck from X.O. - dyn-o-mite! I think we just found a real Mark's Duck House alternative.

Very nice indeed.

There's a relatively famous place right off route 50 in Annandale (visited by U.S. Presidents and other dignitaries) that makes a great "Kung Pao Proper" dish.

We used to like East Chateau in Vienna, but it must have changed chefs or owners in the past two months because the last meal we got there was practically inedible and had so much MSG I had a migraine for two days. Old Peking in Oakton was recommended to us, but it was really forgettable food -- to the point that no one wanted to eat any of the leftovers we brought home, not even our voracious teenage son. Wu's Garden in Vienna was another big disappointment, with greasy bland food. Maybe I am spoiled by the fact that my father used to own a place in NYC's Chinatown? I miss having squab and Hong Kong egg tarts!

One of my Chinese coworkers gave me a list of suggestions: Fortune, which I have seen referred to here as good but overcrowded; and some that no one has mentioned. Any word on Hollywood East, Oriental East (both in MD) and China Garden in Arlington?

I believe you're actually referring to the Peking Duck. It's actually in the Bailey's Crossroads area on Rt 7. It's not on Rt 50. The glass in the front of their restaurant is actually bullet proof glass - and, yes, previous Presidents have eaten there. Their lobby is filled with framed photos of previous "guests" of their restaurant.

Peking Gourmet Inn, not "Peking Duck", the name of one of their menu specialties, along with Szechuan Beef Proper (don't remember seeing Kung Pao Proper), and Garlic Sprouts with one of Chicken, Beef or Pork.

I thought that place sucked the couple times I ate there. Didn't a congressman or something own it? I think that's the only reason presidents would go there.

At Peking Gourmet Inn, stick to the garlic sprout dishes and the Szechuan Beef Proper (and maybe the Peking Duck), and you will have delicious food unlike you can get elsewhere in NoVa.

No Congressman owns or owned it. The first President George Bush (and maybe Ronald Reagan) used to go there, followed by Colin Powell and may other high-ranking military officials, who jumped on the bandwagon.

I have been going there since before the bandwagon started dropping by.

Thanks for the correction. I've been there a few times and enjoyed it. I used to work with a person who would go there monthly. I guess the name "Peking Duck" was referenced by him as the name, which is why I referred to it as such. I've had the Duck there - love the pancakes, plum sauce, duck & scallion. All wrapped up = yum !!

Hands down the winrars of the Chinese food battle of Fairfax County:

1. China King (Clocktower is pref, but Fairfax is acceptable)
2. Peking Express in Vienna
3. Peking Gourmet Inn in Culmore for the Peking Duck alone
