The New School of Northern Virginia
Posted by: Sidney W. ()

Is there a good school in Northern Virginia where Fabian Society philosphy is emphasized?

Does anyone know whether The New School of Northern Virginia:

http://newschoolva.com/

adheres to the philosophies of The New School in New York:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_New_School ?

Thank you.

The New School on Pickett Road is for students who do not fit in elsewhere.

If you are gay, the New School is tolerant.

If you are a guy who likes to wear dresses, the New School is tolerant.

If you are a girl with anxiety disorders, then the New School is for you.

Hmmmmm...almost $18k for tuition for elementary grades, over $23k for high school tuition.

That's a lot of money parents are spending on some bullshit school like this. These kids will probably all get theater or English literature degrees when they finish college.

This tuition money would be better spent on a school that prepares students for the sciences, economics, engineering, etc.

Those economics degrees have been really helpful to people!! Ha, ha. Economics is not a science---it's voodoo. Magic 8 ball could do better. You must be an "economist". At least with theater we can escape the pain of your "science".

Go apply for several jobs that don't involve taking orders for fries or grande lattes. See which degree, a BA in theater or a BS in economics, lands you more job offers.

A BA in Econ will halp you get a job as an entry level research assistant.
If you want to climb the ladder, a PhD is the norm. If you want you kid
to go to a school where Marxist indoctrination is the curriculum, send
them to Arlington County Schools. It's a lot cheaper.

Well, actually, job offers for what? I think in the long run the theater major might be a more "fun" person to hang around and could get some job offers just based on that. Happier people who think about more than just money can be a lot of fun. It's true that you might not want to marry one, but they sure are fun to "play with". Happiness is not a value in our society though. If you're happy, you must be Marxist. Yes, Arlington is cheaper, but did you ever notice how rich their Marxist parents are from being in this capitalist society---it sorta worked for them, didn't it? I would guess that the parents are pretty cynical about making money and want their kids to be happy instead.

I bet a lot of econ majors have theater major kids. You can tell by looking in the back of the programs at who donates to the Kennedy Center, etc. Funny how they value the arts.

A friend of mine sent her children to Nysmith School, cost around $15k a year back in 2000 or so, so rather comparable. I don't know if New School is similar or not, but here's what they had at Nysmith. The classes are 15 or so, and taught by two teachers, every student had a computer for every class if it was at all useful for the class in question. Her kids are amazing students and very high achievers. If I had the money, I'd consider it for my children. Obviously it's a huge investment, but it could pay off in the long run...if you have the money, which even in Fairfax most of us don't.

I know plenty of PhDs who are in the "hard sciences" and are not climbing any ladder. In fact many are foreigners (guess which continent?) because Americans know that is not the route to big riches. The way to get rich in America is to own a successful business. Going to New School or Nysmith or Langley for that matter might help you get to know the children of successful business types and that might help you to become one in the future---while you are getting a "Marxist" education. That way you can "have it all".

Excellent school! High school emphasizes critical thinking, research, and strong writing in a nurturing and supportive environment. It is truly more like a small liberal arts college than a typical high school. Assessments are authentic and homework is useful -- not at all the typical overly burdensome busywork we were used to in FCPS. Best of all are the small class sizes and incredible teachers: very knowledgeable, interesting, and caring people who will go the extra mile. Teaching is not just a job for them, it is their passion. This is a great school for bright students who are uninspired by school, or who need a smaller class size. It is amazing what a difference the right environment and teachers can make.

Don't send your kids to this school, it does not prepare the kids for college, any student can basically bullshit their way through middle school and high school and come out with absolutely no preparation for how to handle real world social skills and academics. Pick any school over this one, I wish I had.

It's a small niche school, but one that is well regarded for what it does. Unless you have been there and talked to students and teachers, you won't know what the school is all about. They are certainly not Fabian in intending to turn out bunches of socialists. They are however in the vein of Howard Gardner's notions of multiple intelligences, each of which a well-rounded student should explore and seek some mastery over. You don't have to be a genius to go there, but you can't be a dummy either, which would have ruled out at least several of the negative posters above.

I go to the New School because of mistakes I made in the past.
I honestly don't know how to express my thoughts and opinions of the school through text.
I do not enjoy it at all, and think I have been robbed of a proper high-school experience. But as I stated above it's my actions that got me here.
I do not get to graduate with the friends I've known since kindergarten, I don't get to go to senior prom, and I have no real life exposure. I feel as if the New School denies reality and shelters the students in an unrealistic manner that will lead to absolute failure.
There is no competition because it makes kids feel 'inferior' and there is no preparation for tests like the SAT/ACT.
I am a senior at the New School and seeing as how there are kids as young as fourth grade they make it the job of the upperclassmen to babysit.
I'm sorry but I was unaware I was paying to babysit somebody elses shithead, spoiled fucked up kids.
Do not send your kids here unless there is literally no chance of going anywhere else. They've made it impossible to transfer because of the credits they give and they endorse too much bullshit.
Life is fucking rough and nobody here understands that and it's not like they tell you.

I've had fucking enough.

As my college above I also go to the New School. I came to this school because my parents thought that smaller classes would be a better fit for me and because of poor choices from my past. All I can say is that this school has ruined my life. I cannot do anything anyone else can and they held me back for no reason. I am not graduating with my friends and I am stuck in school an extra year FOR NO REASON. This school has pretty much ruined my entire school experience. I believe this is the worst school out there. If you want small classes, go somewhere else. The fact that there are elementary students is awful. ITS LIKE YOU HAVE TO BABYSIT THEM. TEACHERS ARE INSANE AND HALF OF THEM DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. I bet if a teacher sees this I will get in trouble but I have the right to my own opinion and freedom of speech. THIS SCHOOL IS NOT WORTH ANY MONEY, ESPECIALLY NOT 25K A YEAR. Absolutely ridiculous and the money doesn't even go towards anything important. THEY BUILT A PLAYGROUND FOR THE LITTLE KIDS.
GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

If you have the money to spend on this school you might as well look into the other very viable options within a five mile radius: PVI, Flint Hill etc.
This is a very sheltered school strictly meant for rich arabs who think they own you, rich asians who try to buy you or mentally retarded kids who come up behind you and scare you half to death.
I am scared for my life at this school and honestly believe that one of these kids could pop off at any moment.
If you want your kid to be happy and successful do not send them here, this school does not breed winners and it's a direct path to NOVA. Which is hilarious because the school motto is: "After all college is the next step."
I will save you the time:
The owner, yes I said owner because this is a for profit school, John Potter is a great guy, and I generally believe that but what he wanted from this school is not what it is.
The teachers are nice people, good backgrounds and field experience but I feel as if i'm learning from a perspective and not getting a broad view from where I can draw my own conclusions and form opinions of my own.
I don't come from a poor family but I hate the fact that my parents are paying $30k a year for me to go somewhere I hate so much, so I tend not to complain to them because they have enough to deal with.
I used to love life, I used to like school, I used to play sports and now i'm not the same person. This school has changed me for the worse and ruined every aspect of my life. I'm a senior now, graduating with no friends, and no stories.
It's sad that i'm on this website wasting so much of my time but I can't even begin to express how I feel.
Admittedly I rarely care for others but this school has robbed my of my sympathy and compassion. The special needs kids have constant outbursts and have nobody telling them that what their doing is right or wrong and it makes for a terrible learning atmosphere. I am not challenged in any way at all and they've managed to incorporate about two hours a day of idle time.
I get to school at 9 and leave at 4, which is great because I sit in about an hour and a half of traffic each way so if you want a job while attending this school you're fucked, if you want to be social you're fucked, and if you want to just live life like everybody else, you are fucked.

I am very, very angry and i've hit my limit with the amount I can deal with.
I will probably get kicked out of school for expressing my thoughts and opinions but I can't go back anyways because the environment is horrendous.

I'd post my name and contact information just so you could contact me with further questions but with two weeks left i'd rather graduate if they don't catch me by then.

150 kids, 25k tuition = $3,750,000 in just tuition, and yet they still over charge for lunch and standing inside before class during the winter.

I fucking hate my life and that this is how low i've gotten.

Daughter had a friend who went there. She had anxiety, etc. It seemed to work out well for her and I think she did okay in college. I know another friend who had a relative that went there and apparently he went in because he couldn't adjust to "normal" school. Apparently, he is doing great in college and now 'fits in".
I think it is worth investigating if your child needs something different. It is certainly not the normal high school experience.

Wait a minute....
The first All-Starr excursion led to the release of Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band (1990), a compilation of live performances from the tour.[153] In the same year, Starr recorded a version of the song "I Call Your Name" for a television special marking the 10th anniversary of John Lennon's death and the 50th anniversary of Lennon's birth. The track, produced by Lynne, features a supergroup composed of Lynne, Tom Petty, Joe Walsh and Jim Keltner.[154] Shell Station 9803 Richmond Highway, Lorton, VA 22079 turn at Gunston Rd do not merge onto I-95 or I-95 South. Trun left on Telegraph Road 22309 north to Rolling Road. Turn around use Fairfax County Parkway 268 old road 7100.. Stop at Springfield Mall near Pollo Rico, see Ahmed Khan.
Call warehouse for parts. You can wait at Burger King or McDonalds on Backlick Road for Jennifer or continue to Industrial Drive.the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Mitch Mitchelland Noel Redding, later said that they had been warned about a planned drug bust the day before flying to Toronto and that they believed the drugs had been planted in his bag. Hendrix was the world's highest-paid performer when he was arrested, but this was his last tour, and he died the following year

Wasn't this the same place that got into all the trouble because of hidden cams and "quiet rooms"?

I thought they closed that place.

Oh my god. All of these arguments are ad hominem. Please refrain from making personal attacks during a debate.
I have gone to this school for over 3 years. In that time, the biggest "scandal" was when a nasty breakup between two of my fellow students got slightly out of hand. All the scandals you people have been referring to happened under the old Director. Several years ago, the school was turned over to a new Headmaster. He plans to make the school a non-profit when he retires. That is why the school charges so much: he's building up a nest egg so he can retire comfortably.
It is a good school. Most of the school is made up of non-gender-normative people, international students, and generally minorities of all sorts. As such, the community is very supportive. There is really nothing bad about this school.

So what you're saying is... Every single person with any sort of mental disability is a mass murderer. That is exactly the definition of prejudice. Please don't reproduce.

Hi

I'm Michelle Takaoka. I think I've given one too many blowjobs at Robinson. Or maybe it was the fifth grader. Anyway, if I need a new school on short notice, would I fit in here?

The New School was founded in 1989 by John Potter, who has been the Headmaster ever since. He's been slowly transitioning his power to the Senior Leadership Team over the past few years, but he's still officially the Headmaster. There have been lots of "scandals" since the school was founded- obviously, that's true with pretty much any school, but there has been an increasing amount since Potter started transitioning his power. Ask around.

About half the student body would disagree with you. Again, ask around.

The New School may have its flaws, but very few people have had trouble fitting in.

I went to the New School for my highschool years and I swear to god it was the BEST three years of my life. I transferred there from St Stevens St Agnus where I was getting bullied for being a nerd. Had no friends there either. Went to the New School for sophomore year and it took me less than a week to make more friends than I'd ever had at once. I was accepted into a group of videogamers, engineers, and tech nerds. To all the people saying this school is only for the deviant, I am a white cis heterosexual male who dresses every day in jeans and a tshirt. Don't wear dresses, and I'm definitely not what you call a "fag" or "tranny freak". But then again, even if I did, there's nothing wrong with that. All those here saying the school is accepting of the deviant, that's absolutely true. But we also don't put up with bullying and bullshit. Bullies are ratted out quickly and dealt with not just by the teachers, but by the students. The New School is like a family, you even call your teachers by their first names. Whether the money is worth it is your prerogative, but I'm currently pursuing a computer engineering degree at GMU after graduating from the New School. This school is for everyone looking to get a good education and have an unforgettable highschool experience. Now then if you have anymore criticisms, please kindly ATTEND or at least VISIT the school before you make any assumptions.

Perhaps you left St Stephen's & St Agnes because you couldn't spell. (Or perhaps you never attended.)

Someone on this thread knows a lot about John Potter. I as well, and yes he did indeed marry one of the students that attended his school in DC, called Somerset (which is named for the town came from in England). John's wife also taught at Somerset and handled all the back office stuff. He dumped his wife and married Amy, of 17 years of age when they started dating, and married her shortly after graduating. I wonder if her parents were pissed?
