Didn't Gravis say he was forced to watch tapes of old Mcygver shows while giving Dirk a full body mssage as part of the final exzam? At least Dirk wore headphones so Gravis was not subject to Meade Skeleton's music.

How was that business trip to Hawaii with Dirk, Gravis?

I miss Dirk and his massage/wiccan lifestyle. Nothing says success like giving a back massage to Tom Hanks 20 years ago.

MMA = Mixed Martial Arts

Fairfax Jiu Jitsu has a great MMA program led by Bill Easlick. Bill has an incredible system for teaching MMA...striking, defense, clinch, takedowns, ground and pound, and submissions. He is a certified USA Boxing coach and is experienced in Judo, BJJ, Muay Thai, boxing, and San Shou. Bill was also the Next Level Fighting Champion in 2006 and 2007.

Fairfax Jiu Jitsu is the only school in Northern Virginia with two full-time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belts, David "Rock" Jacobs and Mark Jones (http://www.fairfaxjj.com/instructors.html). Both of them regularly medal and get top placement in grappling tournaments every year. Dave is one of the most active grapplers on the east coast both gi and no-gi. Both are EXCELLENT instructors and will definitely improve your jiu jitsu by leaps and bounds. We have BJJ classes Mon through Saturday. We have great students that are all are invested in helping each other improve.

Our facility is 5000 sq feet and has over 1500 sf of contiguous mat space for grappling as well as a matted area for our Thai heavy bags. We are in the midst of improving the facility, adding lots of new features.

I definitely encourage you to come out and check us out. Take a few classes, meet all of us and the students. That is the only way to get a feel for the school and determine if it is right for you.

+1

I like to see some good punches thrown, but I hate watching the "ground game" and hearing some pussy wannabe fans talk about "arm bars" and "gassing out" while one fighter basically fucks the other.

Nobody is scared of your Tapout shirts.

Every guy I've seen wearing Tapout paraphernalia looks like he enjoys wrestling with boxes of Twinkies.

HA! Well, you have a point there. EVery hayseed, redneck, mullet wearing freak who used to think pro wrestling was real can gain some of the mma panache by just dropping a few sheckles at Wal-Mart. Racing shirts don't make you fast, Playboy shirts (or mudflaps) don't make you a playboy, and MMA shirts certainly don't make you a fighter.
FOr the OP, onespirit used to be in Herndon and back then it was a great rough and tumble gym. There were plenty of open times for just freestyle mma and multiple different classes avaiable, all of which were valuable. A friend of mine named Johnny Curtis (All _American wrestler at GMU) used to do the wrestling, and there were a host of other extremely qualified instructors who taught anything from muy thai to bjj. The nice thing about onespirit was they didn't waste your time... I know some places (I think one in Alexandria .. Team Something or Other) will say things like "...unless you are an Olympic Wrestler, you have to take wrestling" which was a complete waste of time for a lot of folks who wrestled in college. One spirit allowed you to be as serious or as laid back as you wanted to be, but offered top caliber instruction regardless of where youi interest level fell.
One word of advice though: I don't know you, of course, but don't go jumping into MMA just because it looks cool on TV. Learning all of those disciplines is going to require a lot of time to master, while simple classes like Krav Maga can teach you to defend yourself very adroitly in a shorter period of time. Krav Maga is a very effective system that can be employed regardless of body type (what I mean is, I wasted a lot of time in Karate before- I am a shorter guy, and I found the kicks and strikes in Karate to be a disadvantage to me since I had to get in close range, thereby exposing myself to attacks,Also, it was boring as hell)

I cant recommend mi ki do gym/dojo highly enough

Its a smaller family run gym that was started by the current owner's father. He was teaching MMA before MMA was even around. If you have any questions about the instructors (brent hess + umaer haq) credentials just take a look at Operation Octagon's championship beltholder list.

I've taken a MA before (For four years), but not MMA. However, my neighbor and longtime friend is an MMA fighter, and he's been in numerous competitions over the years. He trains at Fairfax Jiu-Jitsu/ Yamasaki.

Fairfax Jiu-Jitsu is the best place to train in Northen Virginia.
They've got an amazing facility with 10,000 square feet of space, including two very large separate class rooms and a strength and conditioning area and locker rooms. They offer classes 7 days a week in Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Muay Thai boxing and Capoeira.
They have three (3) amazing BJJ blackbelts, including Mark Jones, David Jacobs and Abmar Barbosa, who are elite competitors in the BJJ world, with numerous medals each.
The MMA classes are outstanding. Bill Easlick has created a great program and class structure which is able to have top level athletes training side by side with recreational students. The team has produced amazing fighters including several undefeated fighters and the welterweight champion of Operation Octagon, the largest MMA event in the Washington DC area.
The Muay Thai program is incredible. Matt Nielsen travels to Thailand twice a year and trains at the top gyms there to stay current and sharp with his classes, which are ran exactly as training in Thailand. They're also one of the only teams around to develop Class A level fighters who are among the best amateurs in the country.
It seems too good to be true that one location could have such incredible programs, but Fairfax Jiu-Jitsu has done it. The hardest part about being a student here now, is deciding which class to take each day.
