'Slow Down' Signs on Burke Center Parkway

I rarely drive further east than Roberts, so these may not be new, but has anyone noticed the 'Slow Down - We Live Here' signs on BCP? There are 50+ in the median from Roberts to Coffer Woods along with an FCPD message board reminding drivers that the speed limit is 40MPH. These are apparently sponsored by a group called Burke Walks and the Burke Center Conservancy logo is on the signs, but their office denies any responsibility.

I appreciate the sentiment and concern these group has, but my understanding is that signs in a public (VDOT) right-of-way are illegal even though politicians and business offering test preparation, dog walking and cheap real estate do this all the time. If I am correct in this I was hoping that someone could provide a reference to the appropriate Virginia statute.

If speeding is an issue on BCP, then this group should speak John Cook and the FCPD to increase enforcement. However, I find this to be offensive and a small step escalating into the type of issue we saw recently in Burke which resulted in somone getting killed.

You find this to be offensive? This is what bothers you? You have GOT to be kidding me! What else offends you? Are you 100 years old? How could it "offend" you? I could see how it might BOTHER you, maybe even ANNOY you, but OFFEND you? Are you a mental patient? Focus your efforts on other things! Go outside! Enjoy life! Get a hobby! Thanks for the laugh though. Hey, if you really wanna get irate, go down BCP and then down Olley, they have those signs there too. Inconsiderate Bastards

If you feel that the speed limit is too high there is a process with VDOT to address this. It is not the responsibility of a bunch of busybody yentas to place signs telling me that I need to slow down when I am driving the posted speed. I encourage Burke Walks to have FCPD mount an aggressive enforcement campaign or take whatever LEGAL actions they can to address this. However, littering the median is not the way to do this, although I would have less of an issue if they had a SINGLE sign at each intersection.

Nothing wrong with a both-and approach.

Same signs are on Olley Lane in Fairfax. I feel bad for people who live on busy streets like that, but they must have known what it was like when they bought their houses.

I'd rather have those signs than speed bumps.

Not to worry, soon enough the political signs will outnumber those. Just take the speeder signs down if you don't like them.
