Does anyone else have this problem? Whenever I am listening to WMZQ on my radio upstairs I pick up people talking from an airport control tower (I think it's Dulles). It gets really annoying.

No. The annoying noise you hear is the depressing country music on WMZQ.

Actually, WMZQ does not even play country music anymore. It's shitty pop music that they call "country." Thankfully I have XM Radio in my truck, so I can listen to real country music while I'm driving (on the PRIME COUNTRY station).

Fascinating -- this shouldn't be possible. Dulles's frequencies start at 120, and WMZQ is 98.7. Air navigation in general starts at 108.

Maybe it's a pirate airport with pirate ATC frequencies.

I've had the airport ATC come through on my TV once, during the Super Bowl in fact (It was over the VHF/UHF roof-mounted antenna). I figured out that it was emanating from a flight passing directly overhead. Obviously they had the juice cranked up on their transceiver.

It used to happen to me quite often actually. I live in Clifton if that's where you are...Who knows it could be manassas airport since it isn't that frequent, but IT USED TO HAPPEN TO ME OFTEN when i was back home. Now I'm away at college :)

It's very possible. If you pump enough watts thru a transmitter it doesn't matter what freq you are tuned to. The other freqs will bleed over. I have a transmitter and if I crank up the watts you can clearly hear it on all the radios and TV's in my place. That's the same reason when you drive by a radio station antenna you get that stations signal for a sec or two.

Sounds like the signal is bouncing off something or maybe you are in the path of a repeater. Although I though they did away with microwaves and repeaters years ago.

Not necessarily. It usually takes shitty equipment to pick up intermod from other radios. Properly filtered and engineered receivers should be able to eliminate imtermod.

And typically, intermod is heard on frequencies that are above the transmitting frequency of the offending station.

So, if you're listening on a scanner on 180 MHz to the WMATA operations, you might hear WAMU or WHUT or WETA which are in the 88 - 90 MHz range and would have first harmonic at 180 MHz. You should not hear them if you were on the low side...

it is VSP car to car. certainly better than listening to Jenny Cash and her fake laugh and fake texas accent

In the Oak Hill area over the past week I have had issues with clarity on WMZQ and a few other stations around the freq.

I like to go to Jiffy Lube and listen to the concerts on the big grassy hill. Sometimes I roll down the hill.
