Why are there 6 BKs and 1000 McDs??
Posted by: BKmonster ()
Date: October 05, 2010 05:10PM

First let me answer the burning questions you all have- yes, I weigh 500 pounds, never had fine dining in my life and think a Whopper is indistinguishable from filet mignon.
Having said that, how there is literally a McDs on every corner in the FFX, Annandale, Burke general area and just a few BKs total? One in Burke closed last year. I can't be the only Northern Virginian who think McDs tastes like prison food.

Sounds like a hole in the market! Go start a BK franchise!

It is a little ridiculous though. Chantilly has 3 BKs (McLaren Rd, Centreville at 28/29, and Fair Lakes) while Burke/Fairfax has NONE.

Similarly Chantilly has 4 Wendy's while Centreville has 0! Check out this ridiculous google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=wendy%27s+in+fairfax,+va&sll=38.891567,-77.439194&sspn=0.264014,0.609741&ie=UTF8&hq=wendy%27s&hnear=Fairfax,+Virginia&ll=38.877938,-77.371216&spn=0.132032,0.304871&t=h&z=12

Hole in the market man. Go open one up. Get a Sonic in Fairfax while you're at, or Checkers, we're long overdue.

BK has crazy calories. McD sandwiches are usually around 500 calories, but the Whopper has 670, and 760 if you add cheese. Once I went and tried an "Angry" chicken sandwich, later looked it up and it had about 1000 calories by itself. Also the drink sizes are gigantic at BK.

The sandwiches are better, but the fries are worse and the drinks are often flat or watery, at least at the Hunters Woods one.

+1. Every time I go through a BK drive thru (which is rare in and of itself because fast food is my absolute last resort), it's slow as fuck. Every. Single. Time. And God help you if you come out of Jiffy Lube Live and want to hit the one in Gainesville. Jesus H Christ. You'd think they were out there slaughtering the cow and processing the meat too because it takes FOREVER. My buddy gets the concert munchies every time we go to JLL and has to hit that place afterwords. After the Rush concert we were the 3rd car and it took 12 minutes. What the fuck? It made me want to lie down in the middle of the road!

Speaking of Sonic, I am continually assaulted by their lame commercials but I don't think there is this area and this thread confirms that, seems weird they would advertise so heavily up here.

Carroll's Drive In.

I don't know if it was a chain or the one in Annandale, across from the fire house, was the only one.

Architecturally it was like the old McD's, no indoor seating, you just walked up to the counter.

I agree, too many McD's and only one Wendy's in all of Burke and Springfield, except one Wendy's way down in Newington. Taco Bell is also in very short supply, but McD's has more presence in Fairfax Co. than Starbucks.

Where are you, Sonic?? I agree, Sonic needs to stop teasing us with its commercials.

There is a bojangles just across the woodrow wilson bridge (495) on route 5 next to iverson mall in Temple Hills....

http://maps.google.com/maps/place?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=bojangles+in+md&fb=1&gl=us&hq=bojangles&hnear=Maryland&cid=13384349329854461047&ei=78urTM2SFIP98Aai5J37Bw&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CBYQnQIwAQ

Dirty Rice FTW! Oh, and if you go up the street another block just past the 7-11 on the right on route 5 there is a DRIVE THROUGH LIQUOR STORE! So you can get your chicken box and some 40's (or some spirits if you want!) and drunk drive and munch all the way home! We need these in VA!!! :)

There was a Bojangles in Arlington, on Columbia Pike, back in the 80's.

It folded for some reason. Maybe Bojangles has to have a drive-thru liquor store nearby to be successful?

We had a handful of Jack in the Boxes (or is that Jacks in the Box?) back in the day (mid-late 70's and a little later). One in Merrifield that was recently a Taco Bell, and is now a pile of rubble, another in Annandale next to Pep Boys, which is now a Popeye's (I think that is what it still is).

I never ate their burgers, because their tacos were so fricking awful that I could not resist eating 3-5 of them every visit! They were open 24 hours, and as a 16-17 year old, we would go play "Midnight Madness" at the Putt-Putt course down in Hybla Valley on Friday or Saturday night from Midnight to about 5 a.m. (taking a couple of breaks from the rigors of minigolf to pound a couple of beers in the car), and then hit the Annandale Jack in the Box on the way home at about 5:30 a.m., me for tacos, my buddies for either tacos or whatever burger concoction was out there at the time. Based on those experiences, all of these "breakfast menus" at the fast food places seem like they are just for wussies.

And, yes, to veer back on topic, the BK profit model for franchisees must not work at all compared to the McD's one, which has resulted in many BKs, including two in Reston, shutting down operations.

I remember when they had Church's here. The chicken was very dry as opposed to oily KFC and spicy Popeye's. There's still a few of them in DC or PG County.

I like Chick-Fil-A but they have too much salt in the seasoning.

Boston Market seems to have reduced the size of their chicken so there's little meat on it.

The closest Sonic is in Frednecksburg, I believe. Most of the Wendy's around the area are now operated by Indians. The restaurants seem to be getting dirtier by the day.

BK sucks there full of fast food workers that have been fire by McD. I had one of the BK employees insult my child will standing in line waiting for our crappy food. The child was 5 years old the employee was 50ish. I complimented her on the ability to land a fantastic minimun wage job.

I haven't heard of Jack in the Box for years. When I was a student
at the U of Md. we went there for tacos one night and I think they're
still inside me. Ugh!

Man, I loved those things. On University Blvd, west of the campus towards the Tick Tock. After a long night at the Vous, we'd stop at the Jack and I'd get two of the jumbo tacos with lots of hot sauce. Jack tacos were heavy and wet with grease and had this fine grain mystery meat. That grease would drip out and the next morning you'd find it congealed on the car rug, looking like pink candle wax. Get two chocolate shakes to was everything down. That was good eatin'!

Only when you're trying to reline your stomach. I couldn't take Jack
when I was sober. Tick Tock, Vous, Starlight Inn, Town Hall. Those
were the days. I once got into one Hell of an argument with a City
Councilman named (Reverend) Barry Wood who wanted to shut down the
Starlight Inn.

I would go to the Terrapin Taco House after a night at the Starlight Inn. Used to get a whole large size queso dip and a sack of tostadas which was also good for "relining." I mourned the day that the Starlight Inn was shut down, but I'm sure it was for the best, as one didn't want to meet PG county's finest when leaving there at 1 or 2AM - I've heard stories!!!

Strangely, I began my drinkin' career at Kenny's, an old juke box bar at 14th and Kennedy St NW DC when the drinking age in DC was 18yo. Kenny's was owned by Tom and Marsha Bowen who later owned the Starlight Inn. 18 year olds, we were all somewhat fascinated by Marsha who most nights was the (friendly) barmaid. They had old honky tonk music on the jukebox and jars of pickled eggs, pigs feet and hot sausages on the bar. The place was a throwback to when southern boys would come to DC to get work. For a change, we would go across the street to Gaffney's Emerald Isle Room at Kennedy St and Colorado Ave where they had stout on tap and Irish music on the juke box. Both places had good burgers and fries.

I had been following the story of the Starlight Inn in the paper, even after I stopped going there. It was in an ancient looking old stone building. When it was being converted into the Starlight, they found three dozen phone lines into the basement which suggested a past as a bookie's betting shop, and there were other stories. What I read was that Tom Bowen had passed away, and that Marsha did not want to run the place alone and couldn't find a suitable partner. Also she was taking a lot of heat from community groups such as you had noted. I remember the newspaper story that said that the closing put 36 dancers out of work :( Oh Cody! I remember one time stopping there for lunch and I was the only one sitting at the stage, and you put a spell on me , sitting/dancing in front of me to Tom Petty's "Free Falling." I can still see her :)

I remember when Barry Wood started his campaign to shut down the Starlight
and the Post ran an article about it. There was another article the next
week and the owners of the establishment were complaining that the only
thing the Rev. Wood had done so far is generate newspaper publicity and
they were having a heck of a time with teenaged boys riding up to the
side on bicycles. (Remember they had a drive up window where you could
buy beer to go) They'd ride up, stick their heads through the window to
get a peek. They would also run into the bar through the front door and
out the back but the bouncer/doorman put a stop to it. One day the Rev
was in the strip mall parking lot making a speech and I started heckling
him from about 40-50 feet away. Pretty soon I had a bigger crowd than he
did and they were laughing their asses off. The Rev started shouting at me
and said he was going to call the cops so I told him to call the National
Guard while he was at it because they might need them for backup. I left
and went to the Starlight for a few beers and the cops never showed.:)

I used to hang downtown DC on Capitol Hill. Mostly the Hawk & Dove and
Duddingtons. I once saw Baseball Bill Holdforth drink 54 bottles of Bud
during the Washington Drinkathon and challenge anyone to start all over
again. That guy could really put it away. :)

BK is one of the best. Mcd's is good in a pinch, but Roy Roger's is the best. A Double R Bar Burger is the next best thing to sex. With that perfectly toasted, buttered roll and ham on a cheeseburger.....it's so perfect.

There is a chicken place in Fair Oaks Mall across from the Asian buffet. I have no idea on the quality of the vittles.

I used to prefer BK and agree McDs fries are better. But now that they have the Angus Deluxe I do not miss BK. And with the southern chx sandwich I don't bother seeking out Chik Filet. Roy Rogers is still the best though. THey used to have good fried chicken, too.

1. The prices are too high at BK for fast food.

2. The fries are always cold and to add salt to the wounds they only give you 2 packets of ketsup. MD has all the ketsup you WANT + BBQ sauce, mustard and sweat and sour sauce

3. Loose some weight fat ass.

BK needs to expand their dollar menu if they really want to complete with the big guys.

BK is the only fast food joint I frequent - - it just tastes better and I like their menu options. Plus, I really dislike McDonald's. BK's main problem is they have crappy advertising; this has been a problem for 20+ years. They also fail to get the details right - - they dumped Pepsi for Coke (McD's beverage), their Kids meals suck, and they attach themselves to bad movies for promotional purposes.

I like BK a lot, but they are their own worst enemy.

However, if they ever open a White Castle around here, all bets are off.....

Totally agree that BK missed the boat big time with not really having a good value menu and also not promoting the crap out the kids meal- I have been to BKs where the kids meal is not even seen on the menu board. McDs has tons of customers that they have been catering to since they were 3 years old with the happy meal, now they are grown up and they still go there. A value meal that is worth a damn would be awesome. I think that is how Wendy's got big.

They taste like good microwaveable food. The main difference is they add condiments and some lettuce, onions, or pickles that don't come with the frozen buns and patties. You could make the same for about a dollar a sandwich.

I used to take the kids to the McD’s near 395 in Lincolnia.

You need a goddamn translator just to order there. Valentino’s across the street is better.

......still holds true today. There are more McDonalds franchises in Fairfax County than all other burger chains combined. Why no Roy Rogers, Sonics, Checkers, etc.? It's almost as if McDonalds is giving kick backs to the Board of Supervisors who then shut down anyone else trying to compete with McDonalds.

They speak English just fine. Valentinos is obviously far superior food but just as far from being fast.

The BK in Annandale is where the drive through person can't speak, the food all tastes the same from nasty old oil in the fryer, and all the soft drinks taste the same from uncleaned lines. They redid the building and did nothing with food or service quality.

Wendy's is the best.

The worst is the KFC on Columbia Pike across from Richard’s Sporting Goods.

Had a hankering for fried chicken recently and was in the area. Ordered my food, and sat down only to see that the patrons were all a lot fatter than me, and there was no music. So I got to hear fat people chew. It’s just like Taco Bell, I think I want it til I order.

* McDonals is a company from the "american bread basket" (central time), TRANSFERRED TO A CALIFORNIA 'HOLDING COMPANY' which is managed by illegal alien mexicans attempting to destroy the USA by financial terrorism

* they allow illegal alien managers, once one gets in all the employees are hispanic: TWICE AS MANY as needed to serve customers. home office ignores this because IT EMPLOYS TERRORIST MEXICANS

---------------------

BK is s good franchise with better tasting food than mc'ds

but is still just another corrupt franchise run out of NY,NY or California i am guessing

------------

Who else has been injured by mc'ds illegal hostile take-over of a once clean company??

Dairy Queen, Wendy's

(wendy's had a problem of highest cost of the 3, very sloppy burgers that fell apart (that was fixed), the BEST chocolate shakes!!!, but their peak was no peak - it came just when people found out)

RESTAURANT FOOD CAUSES DIABETES WHICH CAUSES FAT OBESITY AND EARLY DEATH

IT'S A FACT

the "old school" mc'ds was farm fresh and meat was from grocery store across street (only the bun/bread lard content was questionable). NOT ANYMORE

you need to consider if what your eating is really fresh (and unmolested by, say, frying the goodness out of it) if you wish to stay alive long

Mcdonalds and burger king are good places to eat. The food tastes good and it will help you by keeping you out of the nursing home. You will die in your 60s and will not draw social security for 25 years like healthy people do.
People that eat healthy and live till they are 90 are killing us. Healthy people should have to pay much higher taxes.

This is just about any Mickey D's anymore. You go in there & order a big mac, coffee & small fries & this Mexi broad looks at you & says "Joo gwan co-o-o-o-ke?)

NO JOO DUMB ASS FRIJOLERITA, I DON' GWanN NO COKE. I DIN' ORDER NO COKE!

When I was a kid & had jobs like this, I started out mopping floors & taking out the trash. I was supposed to watch what the veteran (relatively speaking) employees did & learn about the place. When I actually waited on customers, the first day or two, the mgr. had a veteran employee stand over me & make sure I did it right.

Now, they hire them off the street & they can't speak English so they put them on the cash register so they can screw up your order.

I don't like going there. The shit they sell is shit, but my wife likes it, so I go there & get her something if she wants it.
