I need help! Who would i call/write with a complaint with an independently owned car dealership? I brought my car in with the engine light on, i already had the code that was associated with the light on. Anyway sat there for an hour, service writer no where to be found. He comes back with this look on his face as if he never saw me before. Anyway, he pulls my car around, ( after a few choice words from me) gets out and clears the code right in front of me, and says they cant find anything wrong.. As soon as i left i knew it hadnt been touched. End of story and close to 3,000.dollars, it's as i said the first time i brought it in on Aug. 25th. the Turbo. Please help me. ..Thanks

First error: taking your car to a dealership to get a diagnostic.

Second error: being nasty to somebody who controls the ability to tell what may or may not be wrong with your car.

Next time - take it to Advanced Autoparts or Auto Zone. One, or both of them, have a diagnostic computer and many will do the code for free.

I already had the diagnostic done before i went to the dealership. And about being nasty, i sat outside for over an hour, a girl walks out and say's i'm sorry but, whats your car here for? I told her and she replied, we cant find your car and B...., left, he had a doctors appt. Now on that note , what do you think. And i have ner had a service writer come out with the diagnostic thing to check/clear codes after it was already looked at..Hmmm Maybe i'm wrong, but i just want to make sure.

Perhaps the code was so insignificant that it didn't warrant any concern. On a lot of cars, the "check engine" light can come on because you turn the gas cap enough times when you filled up. It also can pop up after x number of miles owing to standard maintenance intervals.

Interesting. So you think he was spying on you? Looking through a peephole so he could see you but you couldn't see him?

Fuck car dealers. Take your car to a good independent mechanic. Read Yelp or Angie's List to find one that can be trusted. Most corner gas station/garages can be trusted. They aren't the cheapest but they usually won't shit on a local customer either.

Merv's Auto in Springfield comes highly recommended.

So....how does a check engine light translate into $3k worth of work?

As someone already mentioned, the gas cap could have been loose, other times it could mean you have a bad oxygen sensor or old spark plugs that are causing misfires in the engine.

None of this means 3000 dollars worth of work.

Unless your engine light is flashing, odds are it is on for some regularly scheduled maintenance.

Now about the $3K? What was that supposedly for? That's like replacing your engine money.

Yeah that all sounds weird. I have a OBD II reader that will grab codes and clear the light if I want to... often times what triggered the light doesn't repeat, but if you clear the light and it pops back on you know there's some emissions control item that needs looking at. I can't imagine paying $3k for a an auto repair short of a transmission replacement or something real big along those lines. Hopefully she forgot a decimal point as a part of the rest of the somewhat-unintelligible statement of events and it was $30 to diagnose the issue.

Jenna - What was the code? Is your complaint just that, to report lousy service, or do you want them investigated for the amount they charged you? Is the dealership located in Fairfax County? If so and you are looking for some kind of action on the dealership's part you can open a case with Fairfax County Consumer Affairs or the BBB.

i need to hear more about this $3000 charge to clear OBDII codes. did they *replace* your turbocharger? if so, the charge seems reasonable. what does your service ticket say?

I think the code was G1105, theres more to this story. All i asked was some simple avise. Look at the responses i got. It's no big deal, but im exausted from this crap. I dont want to say what type of car, because i can already see the remarks. I'm not on here to make enemies or to be critisized, but that seem's to be the goal of many.
