Fairfax National Golf Course going out of business?
Posted by: General Lee ()

I heard that they are going out of business soon. Anyone know if this is true? And what are they going to do with the land? I hope they aren't going to build more houses....

Don't know, but I can find out. Unfortunately if a developer gets their hands on it, chances are it will be houses, but not for another 3 to 5 years due to the market. They'll buy it and start of the plan process and engineering, maybe even construct the roads and infrastructure, then sit on it until the market returns.

I'll find and post the link for the plan search through FFX County and you can watch for upcoming developments near you.

Cool, thanks for the info.

I wish someone would keep the course open. I always liked playing there. It certainly wasn't the nicest golf course, but it was close and very affordable.

Fairfax National closes today. :(

Fairfax National Golf Club, which has been sold and renamed several times, will close on Nov. 30 — not because the golf season is coming to an end, but to make way for a new housing development in Centreville.

The new residential subdivision, Sudley Farm, will consist of approximately 60 lots in Fairfax County and three other lots in Loudoun County. According to Fairfax County documents, the property is currently zoned Residential-Conservation (R-C), which would allow by-right development of residential neighborhoods consisting of detached single family homes with a minimum lot size of five acres each.

I agree the prices were pretty reasonable, but it's gotta be one of the most boring courses around. 80% of the holes are dead straight, I think there were 5-6 holes that were practically identical to one another. Didn't it used to be a private course? No wonder they couldn't keep memberships.

it was a total shit course. Narrow holes right next to each other. You could be on one hole and see 5 other holes around you.

Ffx Nat used to be a private club until around the late 80s/early 90s. A new clubhouse was built but the course remained a boring track that is outdated in this era of 2 handicappers hitting 310 yard drives. Golf has been on a decline in this area for years; without the influx of Korean golf nuts, several other courses would have folded as well. This dropoff has also been reflected in the closing of driving ranges at Fair Oaks and Lee Road in Chantilly (now an office building.)

The course was never maintained well. Yeah, I agree that Korean golf nuts helped keep it alive but by accepting substandard quality they helped bring the golf course down. Same thing's gonna happen at Penderbrook Golf.

Nothing is wrong with Korean's in general. But on the golf course its usually a different story. These guys show up with the biggest bag with the most expensive new driver and iron set and then proceed to hit the ball 20 yards with each shot. They refuse to pick the ball up and move along and the course won't force them to play faster, even though they all say they will, because they want their money. A round of golf should not take five or six hours, especially when you're riding around in a power cart. Four people should be able to walk a course and play 18 holes in just about four hours. If you're one of these guys with the newest most expensive equipment that only hits the ball 20 yards you should probably sell those clubs, buy an inexpensive set and spend the rest of the money on a couple of lessons.

Koreans are the worst on the golf course. Short hitting, slow and rude. That's why I drive a bit farther to play in Maryland rather than have to deal with all the Koreans in Virginia.

Agree completely! Theyu are also rude. They don't talk, they are not courteous, no ettiquette. I know it's a cultural thing (in their culture common courtesty is different) but you are living here so learn our culture and be nic.

Great, more homes with more people to tie up more traffic. B-E-A-Utiful!

I would not get too worried about a bunch of new houses. There is no sewer and it is next to impossible to get a drainfield out there.

Didn't know that it had closed. I used to play out there a far bit years ago with a bunch of folks. We left because the management were assholes. the last couple times I played it was for the Hooters charity tournament. not good with a bunch of drunks, people who couldn't play on a golf course that was a shooting gallery. course was it's usual condition, but on a couple of the holes, they had the ground wasp infestations right in the landing areas. Monster fucking yellow jacket looking things about the size of your pinky finger flying all around and dragging grasshoppers into their holes...

How much traffic is 60 5+ acre lots really going to generate?

Now if they would actually use that new real estate tax $$ to fix roads elsewhere...

I had some great times at this course. Starting in High School back in the late 70's when we would drive out from inside the beltway to get away from the long waits at the public golf courses. Back then it felt like we were in West Virginia in the middle of no where. We could show up and play, have something to eat and be back before we would have finished a round at the Public courses we were used to playing.

Later in life I would play a lot of Charity tournaments here, where we knew the course was not going to be great; BUT we would have a great time, drink some beers and have fun while supporting whatever Charity the tournament was for. I always found the staff to be friendly and the food to be good, not gourmet, but a grilled burger, chips and a cold beer before the round and a grilled Steak and all the trimmings, more cold beer, after the round at the clubhouse. Whether it was Cedar Crest, Fairfax National or some gyration in between it was a 27 holes of golf that I will remember fondly.

Did they ever start building houses on that course or is the course still just sitting there?

they have not start building anything down at the golf course. don't know if they will be, but it will be interesting to find out. use to go there in the 80's 90's when my father still had his membership. Used the pool alot before they decided to get rid of it.
