I'm sorry your friend killed himself but it's more likely he was indeed depressed and that resulted in his suicide than some sort of freak concussion-caused-scrambled-brains thing.

Even if it was some kind of freak brain-injury, if you think saying he was depressed is some kind of slander to him you are ill-informed about the seriousness of mental health issues and how common they are in many human beings and should educate yourself because that's a really shitty thing to think.

People never get how popular "star athletes" can be depressed enough to kill themselves. Maybe it's because they work really hard to do what all of their parents and coaches say and when they finally achieve it, they realize they still aren't happy.

You are actually wrong. There is a lot of new information coing out about the effects of concussions on suicides. He was not, let me repeate, he was not depressed before this incident. Please do some research on the medical side of things before you tell other people they are wrong. This is a hard thing for everyone to deal with, and I cannot believe some people are making jokes about it. As far as the person who added "Autoerotic asphyxiation," it think it is horrible that anyone could ever type that about a teenager and think it is okay.

In no way am I saying being depressed is the same thing as beign of poor character, but it is completely unrelated in this case.

I am not saying it's not possible it's a factor, but the vast, vast majority of suicides are unrelated to concussions, and it is not surprising that family and friends are looking for something tangible to believe caused this. Even in the cases described in the article you linked, it wasn't "get concussion, kill self a day later." Like WTL said, no one wants to believe the popular well-adjusted kid wasn't as happy as everyone thought.

But I admit I'm speculating here, just talking about the likelihood.

I cannot believe anyone would say what many of you have.

You might believe something else, but thats ok , I know Austin and he would never do that to himself with a sound mind, something must have triggered a emotional distress in his mind, and many things point to the concussion. Actually, I think most of us here are probably being more objective than you are in your moment of grief.

Apparently Austin was depressed and it resulted in his suicide. What triggered the depression is what you are struggling with. Most bipolar disorder and depression emerges in late teens. Maybe being knocked in the head triggered a depressive episode that no one had ever seen before. Maybe you had only known the manic side of his illness. Who really knows? Regardless, it doesn't make him a bad person. Such things happen even to people who seem to have everything going for them. It's no different than being stricken with cancer or hit by a bus. The biggest disservice you can do your friend is deny the possibility of what may have actually happened. Chances are that in your lifetime you will know someone else who suffers from mental illness. It is what it is.

Some of you, actually, most of you, are being incredibly disrespectful, cold-hearted, and immature. For one, suicide is an incredibly serious matter, and for you guys to be able to joke about it is unhuman. To say "Austin, fuck you and your family." You are an awful person, and I really hope some day Karma catches up with you for saying such an awful thing.
Second, Austin Trenum was a wonderful person. He was everyone's friend. He didn't have a mean bone in his body. He was an amazing athlete, a great son to his parents, a strong big brother two his two younger brothers, and also, an incredible boyfriend to his girlfriend. You could see how much he loved all those people, and even with one encounter with him, you'd know it too. The light that he shed on everyone was incredible. The affect he's having on Brentsville right now is tragic and special at the same time. Seeing all of us come together, that's something beautiful in a time when nothing at all is bright or happy.
Third, before you speak and so 'oh, star athlete's get depressed too', yes, yes they do. But this star athlete was not depressed. He's been playing football and lacrosse for the love of the sport, not to impress anyone. He has been playing for years, and that is a lot of trauma over time to the brain. This past friday was just a final straw. It messed him up, and that's what caused it. It was irrational and a tragic event, but he was the happiest guy I've ever met in my entire life.

Before you speak, accuse, criticize, judge, bash, or anything else that is fully undesired, think. Use your HEAD, because when you don't, you seem ignorant and clueless. You don't know any of what has gone on because you don't know him.

Rest in Peace, Austin. You really will be missed by more people than anyone can imagine. Everyone misses you and your contagious smile. It's been an incredibly hard week so far, but I know with your help, you'll make things get easier for everyone in time.

To friends of Austin.

I'm sure he was a good kid. This is the internet and people will make anonymous hurtful comments strictly to get a rise from his friends and class mates. If you stop responding to them they will stop. Responding with paragraph's, catching emotion, and getting mad on the internet is a mistake. It only douses gasoline on the fire and will perpetuate this thread into a multi-page bashing of your friend who unfortunately decided to end his life (for whatever reason, depressed, concussion spawned suicide - I don't know).

But as others have mentioned, depression is not something that needs to be viewed as slander or something that should warrant some sort of post-postpartum shame. People stating the possibility of depression is not to be taken as an insult.

So my suggestion is to stop posting. Review the RIP threads on the various pages on this forum if you need further motivation to turn your back on this site and quit contributing to this thread.

Oh he wasn't depressed or he wasn't that or he wasn't this...it's a common thread and people do hide their depression well and it just comes at weird times. If I remember correctly there was a rash of suicides at my old high school a year or two before I started there. Two or three kids or something like that. I could be remembering wrong it was a long time ago. I wonder if it's someone does it then someone else on the edge thinks, "Well, I guess you CAN do that after all" and does it themselves. Could also be all the stuff that follows that they see. It might look good to a kid with some self-esteem issues or who just thinks everyone will be "better off" if they weren't around to see all these people all over their school all hugging and crying and being together and all the teachers and parents are making a fuss about it because of this one person that killed themselves. Might make them think they're right and they would be better off. In a high school environment I could see this happening very easily, since my God that seems like the entire fucking world at the time.

They're of course wrong, but to their warped perception that's what they see and think. Earlier someone said something like he wouldn't have done this if he was of sound mind. Well of course not. Anyone that kills themselves is not of sound mind. They're quite obviously of extremely unsound mind to seriously consider it at all.

Again, I'm just talking about suicide in general I'm not trying to make any assumptions about any individuals. It's a subject that doesn't get discussed enough in this country really, considering how actually common it is.

I had a friend who unexpectedly went of the deep end with a manic episode. Fortunately he caught the condition in time before the bipolar pendulum swung the other way. I'll tell you, his personality became almost unrecognizable. Fortunately he never swung into a deep depression that would cause him to do something rash and permanent.
