Barcode on the back of the VA Driver's license
Posted by: trogdor! ()

Does anyone know what info it contains? I was at Target tonight returning an item, and the lady at the desk asked to see my DL. She took it from my hand and then scanned it with a bar code reader, obviously importing information into their computer. WTF? I looked on the DMV website and what do you know, no info.

From the DMV website:

DMV added barcodes to the back of licenses. The barcodes carry the same information printed on the front of licenses, such as name, customer number, and birth date. This technology adds more security for citizens and convenience for clerks at checkout counters.

Cool. For some reason Google search of the DMV for "barcode" http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Awww.dmv.state.va.us+barcode&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B2GGGL_enUS208US208 came up with nothing...but "barcodes" would have made all the difference.

I also found this site http://turbulence.org/Works/swipe/barcode.html that has a java app you can download that will decrypt the info on the card. Here's what mine had:

Name
Address
State
Zipcode
DL#
DL Classification
DL Restriction
DL Endorsements
DL Expiration
DL Issue Date
DOB
Sex
City (?)
Height
Organ Donor Y/N

I'm glad Target now has this in their DB along with my picture and a 5 year history of my purchases. Nice.

Just curious, what kind of thing were you returning that they'd ask you for an ID? That's wild, Target has never asked me for a driver's license. Or any other retail store for that matter.

We have a barcode reader at work for inventory use... I'll have to try and scan mine tomorrow and see if it will read it.

It was a wedding gift purchased off of a Target wedding registry. The person who gave it to us didn't give us the receipt, so I didn't have one. I'm still a bit pissed at Target. It seemed like every time I completed one of the steps for the return, they added another. "Oh, you did that, ok, well, there's one more thing we'll need...."

Keep in mind this is the 2D barcode on the back. I'm not sure what information the 1D barcode contains.

It's the mark of the Beast so that Satan can check you into Hell faster using a barcode scanner when the world comes to an end. Geez. I thought everybody knew that.

its a barcode like a credit card. All policeman are now equipped with credit card readers and cash registers thus they can go ahead and charge you on the roadside those civil penalties.

I think the point is its the same info thats right on the card. So they would get that info even with out the barcode. They can just get it faster with the barcode.

A bit of trivia for you youngsters...when Va first started putting photos on drivers licenses (1969) the license was 2 parts, the photo and the card with all the info on it.

The card part was exactly like a credit card....embossed plastic....the plan was for the cops to have an addressograph machine in their cars and they'd just run your card when giving you a ticket.

The "credit card" license didn't last long..2 or 3 years. Among other things, underage drinkers, myself included, discovered how easy it was to alter the license with a razor blade and a dab of airplane glue. You could just move the numbers around in your DOB!

This just in from the DMV website:

Since barcodes on licenses did not work they will now be stamping them on your head. Look for this on your next renewal.

Thanks for the memories.

My first license was a two-part card and photo in a plastic sleeve. I still have a copy of it somewhere...

I'm not going to run any app that scans my info unless I compile it from the source code. I wouldn't put my learners permit through that program, that's for damn sure.

Well, apparently it's now public info anyway.

What's that have to do with the source code? The project appears to be closed-source.

fyi, the "2d barcode" on the back is actually called PDF417 but is also just know as a "symbol." Nintendo dubbed a similar technology (a DataMatrix which is pretty much the same thing) Dotcode which i like a lot better.

And then Nintendo promptly forgot about it.

But yeah, having worked at Target in the past, that barcode makes it a hell of a lot easier when someone decides to write a check.

Fuck you. I said finally because I've been searching. I didn't know the name of the type of barcode until gravis posted it. Shove it up your cunt, bdimag.

I have had the ABC store use the barcode for me before... instead of having two IDs... it makes sense, double up on the security

Supposedly, the barcode contains all of the information found on your license.

Stores are using and storing the information found on the scanned licenses, they say, to track people who repeatedly return things. Check out Best Buy's return policy. So now they likely have all of your billing information as well as your credit card information in one handy place for anyone with malicious intent to grab (or for marketing I'm sure).

My solution to these policies is to not shop there. If I don't purchase anything, no reason to return anything.

I hadn't been carded in years, but 7-Eleven scanned my license last night when I picked up a 6-pack. That's the first place besides Target I've seen that done.

Also, Virginia Lottery wants to use this technology to install lottery vending machines at some rest areas. You'd have to scan your license before being able to use it.

Many companies do this now too. I was at Toys-r-us last night and I used my Driver's License to apply for one of their credit cards. Make things fast and easy!
