will people here support traffic fines based on you annual income?

($100000 fine for 25mph above speed limit, for example,
like what they do in Finland.... see this old article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/1759791.stm )

Let's say the fine for speeding is 1 percent of your annual taxable income.
If you report $20,000, and you get caught speeding, you pay 1 percent,
which is $200.

If you make a cool million, you pay $10,000 in fines... surely you can
afford it, no?

Just a thought...

How about this. For every point you're above .10 blood alcohol, you go to prison for a year, no parole. I think DUI is the biggest problem we've got as far as safety is concerned, followed closely by excessive speeding.

I think it may have some advantages, but it's tricky. For one, some people don't have any taxable income. You could end up with some screwy cases.

People will say it's communist or whatever, but you could look at it this way: do a crime, and lose a certain amount of time in jail. Get a ticket, and you lose your earnings for a certain period of time. Not that it would be implemented in that way exactly.

I'd like to add that I'd only support this for major speeding, any deliberate infractions where it's dangerous. Not a busted taillight. When the point is deterrence, and not revenue collection, or compensation of some kind.

Isn't the goal to take dangerous people off the roads? Why not tighten license suspension and revocation penalties, with the added bonus of having your vehicle impounded while your license is suspended?
