May be forced to attempt a "crash landing" without the front nosegear.

Someone go take pictures!

I wonder why they didn't just dump the fuel? They were circling around at 26,000ft.

im sure they have a button labeled "dump fuel" because that would be a great idea.

1. Small jets can't dump fuel. Only a few of the large ones are designed to do it.

2. If the jet was inbound, most of its fuel was probably used up anyway (airlines try not to put more fuel than necessary on a plane because the extra weight adds to the cost of the flight).

3. You can't dump fuel over land. The jet would need to fly out over the Atlantic to do it.

Still wondering?

How often do you think jet fuel is dumped in the Atlantic? I've been to beaches where globs of oil wash up on the beach (Palm Beach County) and I assumed it was from ships. I never considered jet fuel! Oil on the beach was so common that there were wipes to clean your feet as you left the beach. I've had this happen in the USVI too.

I doubt it happens very often. If the plane is high enough, I'm sure a lot of the fuel evaporates before it hits the ocean. The oil is probably from ships and offshore rigs.

why cant you dump it over land? jet fuel is just kerosene. Sure it might kill some plants but if they do it in a not so populated area (admittably hard to find around here, but maybe west) whats the issue

Hmmm... probably because most people wouldn't really appreciate thousands of gallons of flammable liquids sprayed onto places where they live or work. Just a guess though....

Alkanes evaporate very easily, which is why you don't have to worry about dropping the mainly kerosene fuel. Ever noticed how when you put alcohol on your skin, it feels cold? That's because it is evaporating. The fuel never reaches the ground.
