CDC advises everyone over 6 mos of age to get the flu shot this year. With all the negative noise about side effects, I can't decide what to do. Any advice?

Eat healthy foods, exercise and take vitamins to supplement the healthy foods that you are unable to eat. If you smoke, quit damnit. I do the above and I haven't had the flu in 20+ years.....and I've been around some sick bastards. If you don't have opportunity or are too lazy to eat healthy, lay off the saturated fats, take suppliments and exercize. Flu shots are an abomination to the natural immune system process. Multivitamins, Zinc, 7 hours of sleep and plenty of exercise and you'll be slinging rocks from your dick in no time.

Two very extreme responses!:-) I'm actually more concerned for my 12 year old. Even though she has egg allergy, she's received the flu shot every year due to asthma. Fortunately, she's outgrown the asthma, but not the egg allergy, though it's mild enough to tolerate the regular flu shot. Her doctors are willing, but wary of H1N1 flu shot (which is now included in the regular seasonal vaccine) and want to administer the vaccine in 2 1/2 doses. I guess their concern coupled with so many people I know who have fallen ill from the vaccine this year has me concerned.

I work in a medical office, and my professional advice is to get it and have your family get it as well, ESPECIALLY children who attend school (imagine how germ-infested one public door handle or drinking fountain can be, multiply that exponentially for a school). I'm a healthy adult female (i.e. not in any at-risk categories), and I still get the flu shot every single year.

To be truthful, it is suggested by the CDC that I get the shot since I work with immunocompromised patients, but I would still get it if I did not work here. Any side effect (apart from the rare adverse event of death) is far better than a bad case of the flu, which can easily cause death due to comorbid complications (decreased respiratory function, syncope, fatal pyrexia, etc).

Thanks for the response. Is it true that the H1N1 has worse side effects?

The nasal spray H1N1 vaccine has a higher possibility side effects than the shot vaccine, but the level of severity is hard to gauge. Most people, when asked to report on side effects, imagine that they are worse than they really are.

Granted, when a true rare allergy or serious side effect occurs, it can be bad; however, symptoms usually appear within a few hours so you might want to sit with your daughter in the waiting room for about an hour after getting the shot, and then monitor her at home for the next hour, since she has an egg allergy.

The best way to put is this: you really would rather get the vaccine and have a couple days of feeling tired, sore or run-down, than risk getting the actual full force flu virus without having had any protection against it.

I smoke like a chimney, drink like a fish, occasionally take vitamins, and had my first salad in years last month. I didn't change a thing during the H1N1 scare, and refused to use hand sanitizer every two minutes like some OCD patient. I did everything but lick doorknobs. Not even a sniffle, despite having close contact with other people who'd gotten the flu.

I ain't scurred.

However, I will readily admit that results may vary, so yeah, you should probably get the flu shot.

While I do have a lot of faith in our medical industry and associated sciences and research, I still feel that your 1st defence is a healthy immune system eg. nutrition and rest for the brain and body. As you know viruses morph constantly and quickly; thats how it starts in birds and pigs and jumps to humans. flu shots only "help" protect infection from a specific virus that that is known at that time. One shot is not a catch all. If your child's immune system is already compromised, I would suggest the shot AND proper nutrition and rest.

Get the shot, and WASH YOUR HANDS. Soap and water do the trick - skip those hand sanitizer squirts.

Also helpful, cover your f**ing mouth when you cough, sneeze, or hack something up. Really. Your mom should have taught you this but it's amazing how many people don't do it.

If you're really motivated to do the right thing, cover your mouth with the inside of your elbow instead of your hand to help prevent those nasty bugs from spreading.

I've never gotten a flu shot and neither have any of my kids. So far, we're still alive and as an added bonus we have less mercury in our bodies. The body is amazingly resistant if you take care of it. Wash your hands, eat well, take some vitamins, exercise and get enough rest (that part is easier said than done) and you'd be surprised how little you get sick.

The whole thing is a racket perpetreted by Big Pharma. I've never had a flu shot in my life. I'd rather keep my 10 bucks or whatever they cost.

I'm 52 and diabetic and I carry 200+ kids every day. I've been puked on, sneezed on, spit on, you name it. Sure, I get a couple colds/flu every year, but never bad enough to miss work. Feel like shit for a few days and then it goes away. Big deal.

I was diagnosed with Guillan Barre last year, and I can't tell you how many doctors, nurses, etc. asked me if I had had a flu shot recently because it has been linked to Guillan Barre. (I may be spelling that wrong)

I had NOT had the flu shot, and after my experience and learning that the flu shot has been linked to Guillan Barre, I can tell you I will NEVER get a flu shot.

Fortunately, my case was mild and I did not have to go on life support or endure months of paralysis. But I do know this, waking up one morning and suddenly not being able to move anything from the waist down for no apparent reason is scary as hell!

It's up to you, but I have to agree with previous posters on their advice for rest, proper nutrition, exercise and vitamins. Besides, if you do get the flu, go to your Dr. right away and ask for Tamiflu. You'll feel better within 24 hours.

Matter of personal opinion. I have been getting the regular flu shot for the past two years. I opted to take my chances and not get the H1N1 one; it was a crapshoot because I know a lot of people who contracted it. However, it is my understanding that the H1N1 epidemic is now over.

I don't like putting vaccines in my body, but I caught the flu in 1997 and I thought I was going to die. I'm older now and figure what the hell..

It doesn't work. It's a waste of money. Everyone still got the flu. Getting plenty of sleep and keeping active during the winter is probably the best defense. Most people have been exposed to H1N1 by now.

What we need is another flu epidemic like 1918. It killed millions world-wide. People would start feeling ill in the evening, and be dead by morning.

It would be great for traffic!

Must be my relative, same bad habits. I have never had a flu shot in my 50 years, and never been sick. However the chances of GB are real, it happened to a family member. The docs made a very strong connection that the day after the shot this person was on an airplane, point being, recirculated air/compromised system. If I did get the shot, I think I would avoid groups for a few days, to let my system build back up and limit exposure to potential problems.

Every year half the office was out with the flu at different times. I lived with the smell of bleach because I did wipe down my phone, doorknob, front desk, things shared in common, even survived the Noro virus (crusie ship), unscathed , but smelling like bleach, with everybody terribly ill for a week, hubby included.

Ironically since you bring up the topic, the swine flu vaccnine contains an ingredient linked to infertility.

Vaccines distributed to developing countries are being formulated to reduce fertility to reduce overpopulation.

I just got it at a safeway for 30 bucks just walk up to the pharmacy and ask for it. This year's has both H1N1 and seasonal flu combined. If I can get an extra leg up against getting sick I'll take it being I take public transit a lot and get exposed to a shitload of different people.

GB is also a common side effect of shingles shot.

Also get cavities fixed and brush, floss, and rinse with antibacterial.
Dental disease weakens immune system.

Maddy: it depends on your own situation, personal health, and how much you come into contact with people - - especially children. Schools/day care centres are a breeding ground for flu; if you have kids prepare for that possibility. However, as others have posted, if you wash your hands and just avoid contagion, etc., you may be ok, As I said before, I have had no complications previously, but then again, I got my medical degree from Wikipedia, along with most of FFU posters. GB happens, but it is apparently an anomaly.

Now, I'm going back to the Colts-Giants game - - good luck.

Nope! They think it may have been from a cold that I'd had a few weeks prior. According to the Dr., I had a miracle recovery. I was only in the hospital for one week, was able to walk with a walker within 5 days, and completely back to normal after 2 weeks.

I'm not 100% convinced that it was GB. Every test they ran on me came back negative, but it was the only explanation they could come up with.

On a side note, if you ever have to have a spinal tap done, make sure you have an experienced Doc working on you and not an intern! The intern working on me in the ER tried 7 times!! I finally had to tell her that if she sticks that needle in my back one more time I was going to deck her. Hurts like hell!

The labels on the virus containers say, "Shake Well". This is because mercury and aluminum settle to the bottom.

The workers at the grocery store or the drug store or the strip club (seriously) or wherever they're pimping the shots these days, do you think they can read English?

Don't trust medical giants like Kaiser either. All their employees are foreigners from low hygiene countries like India. Their floors are carpeted. And they have a history of claiming vaccines are mandatory.

Kids carry disease because they hunt in packs and don't clean themselves properly. Get rid of the kid and you won't need a shot
