What goes on in those palm reader places?
Posted by: Searcher ()

Ever notice those palm reader/tarot card places are all over the place? Every depressed strip mall area seems to have one or two -- and they are usually open late into the night. Is there really a big market for fortune telling in FFX county or is something else going on in these places?

I walk by this place on Wilson Blvd. regularly and wonder what the hell's going on inside.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=38.884202,-77.10042&spn=0.004,0.013733&z=17&layer=c&cbll=38.883553,-77.099611&panoid=jFJ6nPgcmrJYanNx20TTVw&cbp=12,307.93,,0,8.94

There are never people around there, and the rent in that area must be EXORBITANT. It looks shady & totally out of place. I heard a rumor once that it's secretly a brothel, but that's just a rumor. It would make sense though.

How many palms would you have to read to afford a shop in that neighnorhood?

Good question.

Kinda like:

How many kilos of coke does a daylaborer have to
sell to afford a Lincoln Navigator while not paying taxes?

I agree -- many of these places are set up in converted houses or next to MVC "Late Night" video stores -- maybe they are really brothels.

My guess is that there is no shortage of customers for fortune telling. I suspect that it might be more popular among some minority cultures (although not sure which ones). Being in a depressed strip mall next to the porn store is consistent with a "low-rent" operation. And they are almost certainly not paying most of their taxes.

The Ballston location mentioned by TheMeeper is probably a private residence that has the required zoning/license to operate their business; alternatively, who knows what economics underlie the ownership of those kind of structures in that kind of neighborhood. There's undoubtedly a story there.

I doubt they are fronts for brothels. Are there really brothels any more, anyway?

You go in and pay 10 or 20 bucks and they tell you your fortune. Then they tell you have a curse or disease they can cure for 500 bucks or whatever they can get out of you. They really know how to read people and there are a lot of gullible people. It's not a brothel operation, just gypsies.

I had my palm read when I was 19. The Italian-looking woman asked me a few questions and then proceeded to tell me that I would have a romantic affair with an older woman; I fucked the hell out of her that night.

Thats what they told one of my friends. She came out and said, "Should I pay it?"

they are really good at reading people, and finding the suckers.

I stay far away from those joints. I don't even like the idea of that gypsified garbage. Generally, the only "palm reading" I've ever really had was when we were kids, and friends would do that imaginary stuff about the lines on your hands. The only other time I did it aside from that, was in high school math class, when two girls who sat next to me were flirting (So I went along with it).

While I have no idea about the brothels and we know that predicting the future is a scam since we have never seen the headline "Psychic wins lottery!", I can tell you this:

One thing we can be absolutely sure of is that the dead do not speak. Anyone who claims differently is a fraud and needs to be exposed as such.

This is a take off from something I heard once. I'm assuming you have to pay up front. Instead of paying, ask her how much she thinks she's going to get for her reading. Then afterwards get up and leave, when she asks for the money tell her she should have known you were going to not pay her.

The dead do not speak. I can assure you of this.

The dead do not speak. Of this we can be certain.

The dead do not speak. Never have and never will.

What is there in general to disagree upon?

The Bible says

Job 14:12,
so man lies down and does not rise; till the heavens are no more, men will not awake or be roused from their sleep.

At JREF, we offer a one-million-dollar prize to anyone who can show, under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event. The JREF does not involve itself in the testing procedure, other than helping to design the protocol and approving the conditions under which a test will take place. All tests are designed with the participation and approval of the applicant. In most cases, the applicant will be asked to perform a relatively simple preliminary test of the claim, which if successful, will be followed by the formal test. Preliminary tests are usually conducted by associates of the JREF at the site where the applicant lives. Upon success in the preliminary testing process, the "applicant" becomes a "claimant."

To date, no one has passed the preliminary tests.

Sounds like we have quite a few gypsies in the area given the number of these palm reader joints. If the gypsy women are doing this, then what are the men up to?

Is James Randi still around? If I believed in sainthood, this is one motherfucker that deserves it. He used to be the touring magician with Alice Cooper in the 70's and put together all of the guillotine and hanging tricks he used to do. Later in life he got into busting Uri Geller and other charlatans asses.I've seen him over the years on TV. Penn and Teller kind of fill in nicely what he started.

El Pollo Rico is usually a mob scene during lunch, huge lines, but that means your chicken is usually straight off the rotisserie, which is nice. I'd have to say their chicken is better.

Pio Pio has really good chicken too. It also doesn't get nearly as crowded, and I like going there better because they have a bigger selection of side dishes. Pollo Rico only has fries, which I mostly throw out, and Cole slaw. Pio Pio, on the other hand, has rice, beans, etc. as side dishes.

I think the chicken is fresher there too, I get there usually beofre 11, but I like my Yucca. They don't have that at Pollo Rico? I must have been in the mood for rice n beans the 3or 4x I've been, I didn't notice.

Nope, only fries and cole slaw. I always thought that was strange too. Actually right down the street is one of the best south American restaurants around, IMO. Costa Verde. It's on the side street by that Hess station.

You can go in there and eat a big plate of yucca, then walk around the corner and get your palm read!

This thread is kind of related to the one about the guys who chase you down in a parking lot to offer to do autobody repair.

So...are these Palm Readers Gypsies? I saw where in France they are trying to get rid of the Gypsy camps and it has become quite a bruhaha. I know the Germans included the Gypsies in their version of "ethnic cleansing" in the 30's.

Are ther Gyspsy camps in Fairfax Co? If so, where are they? I mean you can't just park your van somewhere and start living out of it, well maybe in a Walmart parking lot.

I am no psychic, but I believe Randi is still around. Sadly, last I heard, he has a terminal disease and has made arrangements for the Foundation to continue in his absence. Also, as an athiest, he has planned his memorial, for lack of a better word, to reflect his beliefs.

1. The dead do speak to some of us. I am fortunate enough to have been spoken to three times by deceased loved ones, once in a dream, twice while awake. One person specifically came to tell me that she had passed (from a car accident and no one had informed me). She was in her 40's and there was no way I could have predicted that. No, I cannot prove that she told me, and since you probably do not know me or my trust-worthiness you are welcome not to believe me. Your choice.

2. Yes, I have gone to one of those palm reading places. It was (probably still is) located on Route 7 not far from Tysons. I went about 12 years ago with my then-boyfriend during a really rough patch in our relationship and it didn't seem likely that we would be together for very long. He came along just to humor me. The woman told us it would be "$20 a palm"- not too bad a price, I thought, even if it ended up being just for fun. She had spoken quickly so I didn't realize until she had me alone in the room that it was $20 PER PALM, not for the whole palm reading. She then said she needed to see both palms for the reading to be accurate... I felt committed to the experience by that time so we continued, even though it was becoming clear that she had pulled a fast-one on me.
She looked at my palm and started firing off statements and cliches so quickly that I couldn't keep up. I remember thinking I should have brought a tape recorder, as there was no way I would be able to remember all of these things. The only thing I remember her saying now was, "Money passes through your fingers like sand." That could pretty much apply to anyone.
Then she started asking me about my relationship. I was young and emotional so I told her that things were tough. She then told me she could fix it by burning a black candle and eliminating a curse an unknown enemy had put on me for $80. I was gullible and she was convincing. She said if things weren't better in 2 weeks that I could come back and she would refund my money.
My relationship was the same 2 weeks later so I went back for my money. She acted surprised that her "cure" wasn't working so she gave me new instructions: I was to go to the store and buy two pairs of flannel pajamas, one blue and one red, both in size medium. I should bring them to her and she would do some sort of spell with them that would "cement" my relationship.
I realized that I was not going to get my money back and that she expected me to buy her two new pairs of pajamas, as well. I was too soft at that point in my life to argue, so I smiled, said I would come back with the pajamas, and got the hell out of there as fast as I could- and never went back.
For years I told this story to my friends as an example of my being scammed, until one day it dawned on me: I am not only still with the same man I was dating then, but we are now happily married with kids! I am not saying that this palm reader had anything to do with that, but it is kind of funny...

There was one with a large lighted sign on Route 1 that was raided for prostitution some years ago. I don't know the disposition of the cases, so I can't say whether that was accurate or not.

I'm still boggling over the concept of "cemented jammies".

I was molested by one such palm reader when I was young. She said she would feel my body to see where I had stress spots. I am 100% sure she brushed my cock three times out of sheer perverseness. I got the hell out and never told anybody about this.

I used to work there and it is indeed a front for a brothel. The women there used to look decent but with every visitor they grow rigid. I'm starting a new venture with similar services. Please find me for more info gentlemen

Most visits start with a table shower and end with a warm washcloth. A bottle of Costco water is sometime offered as a parting gift.

My friend was told by her astrologer that is was a VERY bad time for her to travel. She is missing half of one arm from a car accident. She went anyways. On the first night of her trip, she went to open a chest drawer to put her things away. The drawer flung out too fast, fell off the track and she held out her hand to stop it, so it wouldn't fall on her foot. The drawer broke her middle finger severely. Mind you, no useful hands at all now.
She ended up needing 2 surgeries and an anti-biotic she was put on gave her a psychotic break. 2 years later, it still is giving her problems.

Money laundering. Businesses with little overhead that do small dollar cash transactions are great for this.

If you've never gotten a handy from a gypsy chick, why are you still alive?

I went to one of those once. After the hag read my palm, I read hers with my penis for an extra $20. True story. I guess Gypsies are like moon-face Koreans and will milk cocks at the slightest provocation
