High School Football 2024

Starting the 2024 thread early so everyone can get a chance to share, bookmark the link, etc. I probably won’t post until next season begins but please feel free to share thoughts, news, etc. The 2024 early favorite for me is Freedom in Class 6 and Maury in Class 5. Both return a ton of talent. It will be interesting to see how Madison and Westfield look next year. I think they will both be in the mix again. Also interested in South Lakes, South County, Lake Braddock, etc. Also interested in coaching moves, Westfield, Hayfield, Oakton and Falls Church are all open currently. Should be a interesting off-season. As always please interact and share thoughts. I encourage everyone to engage in this thread as we have done in years past, tell a friend to tell a friend! I will see you all in August, in the meantime, stay safe and have a Merry Christmas!

Realistically, it's going to take some major changes for a Fairfax County team to win a state title going forward. But things change. In any case, looking back over this century, a Fairfax County team has won 10 of the last 24 Class 6 titles. Freedom-W and Highland Springs are looking like a rematch for 2024. But beyond that who knows. One certainty is that the year that two Fairfax County teams meet in the state finals would be the year cross-bracketing is changed.

Concur on Overton NEVER going to Hayfield. Why the hell would he go to a below average program when he has all the current talent and the ability to recruit more?
The Westfield job probably won't be filled until late January. There have reportedly been quite a few calls from interested parties; not sure how many applicants. Some are supposedly from inside the program.

Why would he leave a back to back State championship team and put his nephews future at risk to go to an underachieving team in a weak district? Give one legitimate reason. If he wanted to make a dumb move like that, he should call up TC Williams for a job, at least they would have the bodies. Even Westfield would be more believable.

I can 100% confirm all of the kids from Hayfield’s 2 basketball state title teams all lived within the Hayfield boundary. Don’t slander those kids for what they accomplished. 2 kids’ mothers got apartments in Lorton so they could play for the program. Nobody was recruited, no rule was broken. If you want to see broken rules in VHSL, Look at John Marshall Basketball.

Brian Slay was brought on as DC by the new McLean coach and I think was a large reason they were so improved this year. Slay was a standout player at Stone Bridge before Jonathan Allen. He played at NC State. Very nice guy. He had a very tall task at Oakton but probably didn’t see much talent at McL anyway.

I really don’t see Overton going to Hayfield (or anywhere in Fairfax). He wouldn’t be able to get away with as much in FCPS and the talent is not there as much as in PWC right now. Freedom was STACKED with players. No way that many could transfer…and Overton ain’t gonna move to a place and struggle to win playoff games.

Here’s a thought…the dummy that thinks Overton is going to Hayfield is mistaken maybe because he has heard that a former “Freedom” coach is going to take over. Maybe he’s thinking of the wrong guy. I saw that Gary Wortham stepped down at Bishop Ireton (or maybe was fired, but unlikely since they were 7-4 this past season). Wortham previously was the HC at both Woodbridge and Freedom. It would be an easier commute for Wortham (I think he still works at Woodbridge) and easier to get him a job in FCPS.

Agreed that FCPS won’t crack down on much but I think it will be different if he brings multiple from PWC. It’d be one thing if the kids were already Fairfax residents/taxpayers. This will surely anger some people on the teams in Hayfield’s district.
I do think it’s a possibility…the Hayfield AD is very cocky and does want to recruit (was a coach at Friendship Collegiate before Mount Vernon). Henderson recruited kids from out of zone when he was at Hayfield but that success only lasted a couple seasons.

Just got off the phone with someone who is in the building at Hayfield and here is what he had to say… Aziz was completely blindsided and screwed by being let go, which is understandable. He wasn’t given a reason as to why he was let go. The Hayfield AD most likely had a grudge due to losing to Aziz when he was at MV.

The Princpal at Hayfield is buddies with Overton and the AD also has connections to Overton, so they are trying to lock him in and they don’t have any eyes on anyone else. I have no current ties to Hayfield, except my oldest went to Hayfield and Soco when it opened, so I do keep tabs on the local football scene. I always thought Aziz’s run the ball style was a bad fit for Hayfield. Those kids have always been athletic, but not very tough.

Overton will bring wins to Hayfield, but it won’t be done with Hayfield kids. He won at Freedom with kids that “moved in” or transferred as they entered 9th grade. His program had less than 45 players and regularly didn’t field lower level teams. His coaching ability speaks for itself. He wins and his teams play physical, explosive, and disciplined football. Several receive college scholarships. The issues arises when the community kids who have been in Hayfield feeder schools no longer have opportunities to get on the field because they have been put on the bench by the players who Overton has coached in his youth program for years. The Hayfield community will be excited to land Overton, but most of the benefits of the hire will go to kids that have never worn orange.

I don’t think Aziz got screwed. Watching games this past year Hayfield was not well coached. Lots of delay of game penalties and lots of miscommunication, especially on offense. From what I saw on the sidelines the kids wouldn’t play hard for him because he wouldn’t fight for them in post season honors so they wouldn’t fight for him during the year. How does a team get 5 shut outs out of 6 district games and only 3 guys make first team all district D?

Mickey retired as a teacher so the job has to be posted. He isn't allowed to retire from teaching and coach if within 3-4 months of each other. Therefore, he is retiring now as a teacher so he can be the coach in the fall.
