I'm getting so sick of these Charlestown races and slots ads every two minutes.

Last night I think they bought the entire hour of ads. Every other ad was Charlestown.

They are running more ads because they renamed the casino to Hollywood Casino. They want to attract a higher caliber of redneck.

Whenever I hang out on Sunset Strip, I'm immediately reminded of a giant smoke-filled casino in small town West Virgina.

Ok, I get it now. They are trying to re-brand and have everybody say they are going to the Hollywood Casino. Trying to get rid of the old Charlestown name and feel.

Good luck, everybody in Fairfax County is still going to call it "Charlestown" not Hollywood.

The stupidest thing about re-branding is the dumbass name. There aren't even casinos in Hollywood. When I think of Hollywood, I think of rock & roll bars, tattoo parlors, boutique hotels, and tacky souvenir and t-shirt shops. Not casinos.

It's like opening a water park in east bumfuck W VA and naming it "The Georgetown Water Park".

It's just stupid.

These ads are hilarious. You gotta watch them from that perspective.

Check out the number of people holding wads of cash in their hands. And when have you ever seen this much action in a casino? And how about all those smiles? Then at one point the voice-over says "All the winning you can handle." LOL. I'm pretty sure I could handle more winning.

Almost as good as the Cashpoint commercials.

Shit, I just won 1,200 bucks, I don't think I can handle all this winning, hopefully I'll start losing my shirt!

Another dumb slogan from the ads- "Where fame and fortune go hand and hand".

Who the fuck goes to a casino for "fame"??

The whole place is pretty 'weird' once you get away from the touristy stuff like the Chinese theater or that Reston-cloned Hollywood-Highland Center. Sunset Strip is a lot nicer and is less seedy after dark, but that's in West Hollywood, and not Hollywood proper.

I went to a riverboat casino in Iowa a few years back. There were guys in bib overalls shooting craps, looked like Uncle Jesse from Dukes of Hazzard. The people at Charlestown are just too much to take. I am no snob but it was too weird. I thought when they first opened how great not to have to travel to AC but I was wrong. Probably just save my money and take a trip to Vegas during Football season so I can get in some sports book.

To be fair to Charlestown they saw a niche and they filled it. If you want to gamble you either play there or travel to Delaware or AC. They set $50 blackjack minimums and have people waiting to play. They offer next to nothing in comps, such as they are, and you will wait forever for a drink.

They have the location and a potential customer base of a few million people within an hours drive. They really dont have to offer anything other than the opportunity to play. As the saying goes they are the only game in town and they know it.

The radio commercial I heard definitely sounds like "red, hot sluts."

Apparently Hollywood Casino is a chain, but this is the same ad they used for WV...

Apparently the ad producers have never been in a real casino, because real casino inhabitants typically look like this...

That shit might as well be the Nikkei index. Never understood how to interpret it, but it's a good time killer.

I thought I knew how to read it as well. I had some hardcore better sitting next me one night. That guy amazed me. He knew if the history of some horses and trainers. He said horses that come from CA are generally faster. Never bet a horse who is running it's first race at Charlestown, second race is better. Mudders, turf horses, jockeys etc...

The guy spent 30 minutes telling me all sorts of tricks. Claimed he made about 50,000 a year betting on the horses. Mostly doing exacta's.

FYI - Every horse he picked won. He practically called the race before it was run. The guy was about 65 and had been betting horses since he was 17. His problem was he was doing all sorts of crazy exactas to get better odds and pay outs.

I hit my exacta on a race where the field was nothing but newbies without a lot of wins. I'd like to say I picked with some kind of strategy but it was really random, I could have easily reversed the order of the two picks.

For me, it's just the price of entertainment. I go to the dog track in Florida every other year or so too, just for the booze, the rogues gallery and the ha-ha's.

FYI - Fire Monday killed 27 horses at Charlestown - My guess is careless smoking. The stable hands smoke like chimneys.

At least 27 thoroughbred racehorses died Monday near West Virginia's Charles Town Races after a fire broke out at a group of privately owned stables, local and race officials said.

The fire started about 4:45 a.m. Horse owners and tourists worked to free the animals as fire enveloped several wooden barns across the street from the racetrack and the Hollywood Casino. About 26 horses were saved, said Ed Smith, chief of the Charles Town Independent Fire Company.

"It was feeding time, and a lot of people saw the fire going, but it all happened very quickly," said Ken Lowe, president of the Charles Town Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association.
