Fatal Accident on Jermantown Rd.
Posted by: jabroni ()
Date: July 11, 2007 04:27PM

It's a shame what happened early this morning on Jermantown Rd. - 14 year old killed, while her sister (driver) who was 17 did survive. I was just curious if anyone had more information on the accident. I found it weird that it occurred so early in the morning, abc 7 said 4:45 or so...Anyway, thanks to anyone with info.

oh, and I just wanted to clarify "weird" with the accident occurring so early in the morning. I just figured two girls at that age would not be up driving around, especially during the middle of the summer. Perhaps they did sports, but just odd to me - anyone agree?

A 17 year old driving too fast at 4:45am in the morning. I'd have to guess out late partying because not much is open around that time, I could maybe understand 5:45am, but not 4:45am.

Maybe trying to get home before the folks wake up?

The girls were on their way to swim practice at Oak Marr. No partying here. I had the same initial thought.

Can you imagine going through life knowing your stupidity killed your sister? How could you ever again look your parents in the eye?

I hope they have the poor kid on a suicide watch...

I can imagine an insensitive asshole such as yourself going through life as you probably have pathetically done, so I can imagine anything.

There was a very nice "candle vigil" last night at the Greenbriar pool for the girls.

They have been members of the Greenbriar community for most of their lives. I have known the kids and the family since the early 90's. They are/were good kids, and Olivia will be missed.

My thoughts go out to the family.

First off,
Thanks for the information about what happened. I wasn't sure if they were going to work, or to a sport - cuz I knew of the Rec Center right down the street.

Second,
Who actually thought these girls were out partying cuz that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. A 17-year-old is possible to have been out, but to have brought her 14-year-old sister is just bogus, so if you know of people who bring their little sister's and brother's at that age to a party, then wow.

Third,
The guy with the "stupidity" comment should apologize, because he probably doesn't understand the whole factor of this is a fairly new driver, going to practice at 4:45a.m., probably for most of the week, every week with her younger sister. I don't know about anyone else, but I think we were all "inexperienced" on the roads at 17, so don't go and make it any harder than it already is.

Dumbass.

On my last job I had to get up and on the road by 4 a.m. Man it was the worst experience of my life. No one can function at that hour. I am very thankful I never ran over someone I just couldnt get fully awake. The human body is just not made to be up at that hour.
The worst was on saturday mornings and I had to navigate in traffic with people coming home from DC bars.

I am sorry for those girls who were just trying to get in some practice time.

I work graveyards in a noc. I'm totally fine with being awake at that hour. No road traffic, a reduced load of crappy coworkers and their baggage, and a quiet phone. The only bad part is the lack of open restaurants.

That would be INsensitive prick, you illiterate moron.

But anyway, don't you think it's possible that causing the death of a loved one could be so traumatizing as to make her suicidal? That's all I meant...the kid is going to need a lot help retaining her sanity.

But maybe not....I'm old school, and concepts like personal responsibility are hopelessly out of date. Hell, she (or her parents) might claim that the utility company shouldn't have put a pole at that particular spot...

Speeding doesn't kill people... Going 90MPH down Rt.7100 doesn't cause death. It's the sudden stop when you hit an object that kills. I could drive safer at 90MPH then most idiot drivers around do at 50mph.

I have often chuckled at the dark nature of comments posted on this board, but MAN, this is going too far!! My child was at the hospital visiting the surviving sister. Everyone is, of course, devastated. I hope she never sees this thread!! Or her grieving parents, for that matter. Jeez, poke fun at something else already.

Just a note, if for some reason I pass away, please get a keg and throw a big party out of respect for me. I want one big party like the Jesuit Monks have with everybody laughing, cheering, and having a blast. None of this crying and moping around BS for days. Oh yeah, and dance on my grave please!

If you "have often chuckled" at things on this board, then you should realize that this is natural. Did you "chuckle" when it was about the 4 girls on the beltway, or did you speak up and say "this is going too far!!!!" Is it "too far" just because your child knew the sisters, or that they were young kids, or that it "hit too close to home" for you?

If you take offense to the things thread (or on this board), then maybe you should surf to a friendlier site..... possibly http://www.eo.ucar.edu/rainbows/ .

I've known the family for about 13 years, but that will not change anything on this board.

Shame to see some good kids like that get screwed while trying to better themselves. There should be something the county can do to get them better hours for practice. I dont know that part of the story entirely so maybe it was a private gym but it still sucks.

Trying to understand your logic here...re: rec center hours.

What does the time of day have to do with it? That maybe she couldn't have reached those speeds in normal daytime traffic?

PS: Oak Marr RECenter is a County facility.

The link above just said speed, could have been a few miles over or maybe 20 over. My original point was at that time of the morning you are just groggy and slow to react. i.e. you are just not functioning as you would at noon time.
When/if you get up for work at 630 or 7 think how slow you are and the number of things you trip over or dont see. It was 430 a.m. for them.

Yes, you're right. When my brother hit that telephone pole last week at 25 mph he got FUCKED. The very next day I smashed into a pole on 7100 at 90 mph (Like I hope YOU do) and I just suffered a broken fingernail and a paper cut (I'm a lowly paper boy.) I walked away with a Flinstones bandaid. My brother is dead.

Joe, you should keep driving safely. DO NOT SLOW DOWN. That way, no one dies.

The are speeds where side impact protection isn't going to help much. Some reenforcement and some side airbags aren't going to save the vehicle if it is going fast and hits a pole. The best protection a driver can have is traveling at a safe speed in order to maintain control of the vehicle. Driver inexperience obviously played a part here as well.

That section of Jermantown Road where that happened was (I think) around where it is a 2-lane road that goes past a school and past some apartments. 35 may be too fast going through there, and certainly any faster is trouble.

That section of Jermantown Road is also a sudden curve after a long, straight shot. I'm guessing that whether she was speeding or just tired, the curve threw her off and she lost control of the car.

I've lived around the corner from that curve all my life. I remember my father warning me about it.

I agree about the curve being dangerous. you really do have to watch out when you take it, because it comes out of nowhere when you've been going on a straight shot for some time.

just curious, is that a local government / fairfax county facility across from provident school? i always notice local gov. cars / cops / etc. in there and it's fenced up.

Yes, it's a County vehicle facility....Jermantown Garage...and it's been there forever. It was once the main school bus repair place until West Ox opened in the 70's(?).

I'm not sure what all they do there nowadays, except I know that the two-way radio shop is there.

Interesting point, Fairfax County's "Potters Field" is in the rear of the property. I think it's full now, but the County buried it's derelicts there for years. I've walked around in there reading the small markers that the County put on each grave.
