Posted by: Jake Cameron ()

Hey everyone, I was just wondering how many of you work, like me, in the wireless industry? Anyone here ever work for TMS (The Mobile Solution). I'm out in Alexandra, VA working at Potomac Mills. How about you guys? What kind of online resources do you use? We use phonescoop alot at our store but we've started checking out http://howtosellcellphones.com.

Anyone have any funny stories?

HowToSellCellPhones.com is your website. The information contained in this website has been compiled based off of a collective 30 years of wireless telecommunications experience. We've put together this database of information for all to use to better their sales techniques and to increase their customer relations skills so they can provide their customers with superior customer service.

Does it really take that much skill to sell a cell phone?

Yeah I'd say it does. It takes a lot of skill to be successful at it. You can be a schmuck that sits at your kiosk and sells 2 or 3 phones a day, or you can be a superstar and be selling 10+ phones a day. I'm a national sales director for a wireless franchise in the VA, MD, PA, and DC markets and I can tell you first hand that there is a HUGE difference in paychecks between our long tenure employees and the new employees (less than 12 months). I'm talking a difference of about $15,000 a year in commissions.

Why do you think every wireless company (Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, etc) have such intense training classes and sales trainers of all levels? Even a majority of franchises have their own sales trainers.

The difference between your top salesmen and bottom of the barrel schmuck is only $15K?

Are you one of those schmucks that yells at random customers walking by to try to sell cell phones, being obnoxious and wasting people's time?

Because the majority of people you hire just left their careers at McDonalds?

"You want combo?" just doesn't work in the dizzying heights of cell phone sales.

Yeah, I think in the grand scheme of sales careers, software sales and pharmaceutical sales would be at the top while cell phone sales ranks somewhere between used car salesman and telemarketer.

Well, I dunno...Lear Jet sales is right up there too. Selling arms to the 3rd world would seem to require some sales skills too, I'd guess..LOL

Pharmaceutical reps just slam samples around and bring sandwiches and cookies to Dr's offices. You never noticed that?

Imagine being the cell phone sales guys at Costco. 2 guys in a 4 ft x 4ft box, selling phones while the customers are racing to the "buy 48 bagels in one bag" spot. Or, half of the time, the stand is EMPTY.

Or the Humidifier guy at Home Depot. He stands for 8 hrs at a time on a 2'x3' rubber mat, ready at a moments notice to discuss his product. And at the Fairfax HD, its THE SAME GUY FOR THE LAST 18 MONTHS! Damn, talk about committment! I'm gonna ask him next time how many he sold this month!

Pardon my mistake, 55,000 is the average discrepancy between our beginning sales rep and our top sales rep. Our lead sales reps earn an average of about $75,000 a year. Our store managers are closer to $100k and our market managers bring in about $150,000 a year with their bonus.

I can totally understand the common thought of wireless reps as a low grade sales position. The fact of the matter is that a wireless sales rep can make a ton of money if they're doing it right. With an average commission of around $50 per phone sold (That includes when sold with accessories, features, etc) and an average sales per day of 6 phones per sales rep, thats a hefty salary.

Of course you can only achieve these numbers if you take your position seriously.

One of my first positions in wireless was managing a market of wireless advocates kiosks in costco. These were some of my highest income earners I've ever worked with. You'd probably be surprised to learn that an average cell phone kiosk in the mall earns at minimum $45,000 a month with about 50% of that being net income.

Theres a high margin on cell phones and rate plans, especially accessories (accessories have about 80% margin)

Sales is a crummy line of work as you never have a steady income, even if it is a high demand market like cell phones.

I have always felt there are certain career choices that don't particularly require any special knowledge or training, but your performance is primarily dependent on pure talent.

Sales is one of them.
Clerical is another.

I have some friends who were in the business, but that's about it. Some close friends and a family member of mine work for a major telecom. corporation which deals a great deal with cell phones and wireless technolgoy, but that's as far as my experience goes.

What is this cell phone sales? Don't they give the fucking things away?

I've had a cell phone for 20 years and I don't think I ever bought one. They send you a new one every two years, I think.

Haha, yes we give cell phones away. What most consumers don't know is that we dont make the money on the cell phones, its the rate plan that we make the money on. Well, that and accessories and features.

As Jay Leno said, if you are an adult and wear a name badge as part of your job, you made a bad career choice somewhere along the way.

uh maybe.

except the fact that some phones might cost the dealer say $250 and then sell it for next to nothing. or the fact a PDA is retailed $100 less than the cost to the dealer.

wireless isnt the same anymore. its a matter of time until it goes fully online or completely found at a best buy.

I love Jay, but he's wrong about that. My neighbor is a four-star General in the Air Force. He wears a name tag.
