Are there any FREE local gyms?
Posted by: BrokeAthlete ()
Date: August 25, 2010 12:49PM

I used to have lifetime membership, but after struggling with some bills, I decided to toss it out of my budget. Oak Marr and Cub Run are nice, but I can't afford to pay $6 everytime I enter. Are there any alternatives for a guy like me who wants to work out and stay healthy but can't afford a gym membership?? HELP!

Do push-ups and sit-ups at your house and go for a run around your neighborhood.

Honestly, a playground is great. There's monkey bars for pull ups...jungle gyms for..well, gymming! swings for swingers and slides for sliding! You can get a great workout at a playground! Try Kutner, it's right by 2 schools!

No, I'd rather not try to help you again. You must be one of those people that must be around others to work out, like it's fashionable, or a social event.

I agree with everything Ralph said. Work out at home.

Or, get a part time job at Lifetime and get a free membership.

If you put in 4 hours a week at Cub Run or Oak Marr, you get to use the facilities, no additional cost.

Nimrod (Hebrew: נִמְרוֹד, Modern Nimrod Tiberian NimrÅḠAramaic: ܢܡܪܘܕ‎ Arabic: نمرود‎) is, according to the Book of Genesis, a great-grandson of Noah and the king of Shinar. He is depicted in the Bible as both a man of power in the earth and a mighty hunter. He also figures in many legends and folktales outside the Bible. Extra-Biblical traditions associating him with the Tower of Babel led to a darkening of his reputation. Several Mesopotamian ruins (see Nimrud) were given Nimrod's name by 8th century Arabs.

Not bad!

I don't know of a free gym, but Planet Fitness at 7 Corners (in the back of the Eden Center) is extremely affordable at $10.00 per month.

No, he's right, and you're being a dick. Are you just trying to stay fit, or do you have a specific kind of exercise you're doing? Cycling? Weight lifting? Swimming? Yoga? Punching bag? You didn't say, "Is there a place where I can [blank] for free?" You asked a very open-ended question, and got a generic response. Running around the neighborhood, doing push-ups, and doing sit-ups is a free way to work out and stay healthy.

Go look at footage of basic training or advanced military training (SEALs, Rangers, etc.) You'll notice a conspicuous lack of treadmills and weight benches. These guys can kick your ass, and not because they spent time grunting shirtless in front of a mirror.

Rocky ran around outside, lifted rocks, did chin-ups from the rafters, and presumably ate snow and gruel. Ivan Drago had a state-of-the-art training facility and was getting steroid injections. Who won? That's what I thought.

Point is, ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

People give away exercise equipment for free or very cheap on Craigslist all the time. Just watch that for a few weeks and you should be able to get a weight bench or whatever it is you want. You have to have access to a truck and be ready to pick it up quickly if it's free, though.

Why is it that when unsuspecting people come on this site and ask "normal" questions
everyone attacks?
Did you all have so much emotional trauma in your lives that you have to sit
behind a computer and attack?

Gyms-I don't know of any that are free on a permanent basis. If you watch ads you will notice that some will occassionally offer a free 10, 15 or 30 day trial membership. It is not a permanent freeby but it will let you get a few good workouts in before having to come up with money. Another option if you are taking classes at one of the area colleges is to see if you qualify to use their gym facilities.

There are several free workout facilities in the area other than gyms. Several area parks do have some fairly good workout trails, and some of the area high schools will allow you to run on their tracks. For running or bike riding there are several good trails in the area. The rec facilities on a per visit can be fairly steep, but look into some of the other options. It used to be you could buy short term memberships or 25 visit passes at a discount. Their annual pass is a good buy, and if you are old enough the senior rate is even better.

I would seriously consider Bull Run Park in Centerville. There is a complete playground there for all your workout pleasure. You will be amungst your peers (other homeless people) while working out. And, Im pretty sure you can use the playground for free. So, you get the best of everything a free workout and, social time with your friends...

This is where you went wrong. He made a useful suggestion, you attacked HIM for it. You can't expect to be treated well if you attack those who try to help. Even if that help was not useful to you in your situation, attacking him back was uncalled for.

I can write you up a PT routine, that'll do more for you than weights alone ever could.

A SEAL can do more of a work-out with a sandbag, a tree-stump, and a body of open water, than the average person can with $10,000 worth of gym equipment.

Well, this is what I do and I am in great shape. Sure, I could tweak my diet and loose a little more weight, but I'm comfortable with where I am. I tried the Gold's Gym membership for a year and it wasn't for me. I feel as fit as I was in high school, but I've been thinking about taking yoga classes to work on stretching as well.

most garden style apartments and better townhome communities have a gym or a community center with a gym. Most better hotels also have a work out room. They hardly ever (as in nearly never) check ID or ask any question if you just walk in and use it.

First thing I would do is look on craigslist in housing offered. Look for an advertisement that says gym in the building or work out room available. This is your starting point to finding a free gym.

I suggest checking with your local rec center. I don't know how much it is to use their equipment, but I'll bet it's less than any of the commercial gyms. And the equipment looks decent, but again, I've not used it so I can't say with certitude.

You should check out http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/rec-fitness.htm. Most of the rec centers also have swimming pools if you're interested in adding that into your routine.
