Does anyone kno why there has been one police helicopter doing small, low circles in Kingstowne on Friday morning, 8/20/2010...for at least the last 1/2 hour? Circling over Van Dorn area near Thomas Edison High School and Little Acorn Patch school.

Truancy Officers?

They were zeroing the 50 cal.

They have a new toy and they just can't resist using it.

Donut shop in Kingstowne Village, the school is just the excuse.

I'm sorry if you find the lighthearted responses offensive. If you check on other helicopter related threads on this forum you will see that helicopter activity is becoming sufficiently common that for many it is no big deal. Try asking about why there was a traffic backup on 495, 66 or 95/395 and I suspect you will get a similarly lighthearted response. The point some of us are trying to indicate is don't assume something horrible happened just because there was a helicopter on the scene.

It might be helpful if someone could locate and post the criteria that Fairfax Police use to determine when to dispatch helicopters to crime scenes.

There was a reported assault around there on the morning of the 18th, but that's all I see so far. My bet is that what you witnessed most likely resulted from a stolen vehicle, or somebody was assaulted. A hit-and-run is always highly probable around here as well. Then again, it could've been something as mundane as somebody jacking a burrito from the local 7-11.
