Basically it's equivalent to an inner city getto school! Gangs, drugs, etc, etc.

A few years ago, there was a girl who got in a fight and pulled out a knife! Now, according to FCPS policy having a weapon at any school is immediate expulsion, well she ended up at Hayfield, lucky them.

There is a small % of kids that are highly motivated and do well, but for the most part it's a mess. Of course, the admin at the school and FCPS will tout its IB program and stellar success of some students but that is the exception and not the rule. All that said there are kids that end up at the service academies, UVA, VA Tech, W&M, so it's not 100% hopeless.

And, don't forget the principal there was called on the carpet because she placed an ad in the yearbook selling some weight loss, fitness, improve everything product. The ad even stated that it would improve your sex life. Now, this is the principal of the school placing the ad in the yearbook, trying to sell some product that advertised improving your sex life!!!!!!! I wonder if she's worried about students' sex lives. She sent a letter of apology to all parents. But you have to ask yourself, what kind of judgement does this woman have if she's: 1. selling some "snake oil" elixier and 2. Dumb enough to put something in the yearbook. Of course, FCPS admin just said she shouldn't have done it.

So, if I had a choice I wouldn't go there. But West Potomac, Hayfielf, Edison, etc isn't any better,

Here's a few basics to put things in perspective.
1. Almost every high school in Fairfax and Arlington ranks in the top 10% nationally.
2. Almost every high school in Northern Virginia has a problem with drugs, gangs and the occassional act of violence.
3. For most kids whether you have any problems at a school depends on who you hang out with.

You do not say where you came from or what type of coursework you were used to. If you are coming from a Middle School in that area you should already know Mount Vernon's BIG SECRETS. (There are a fair number of students there whose first language was Spanish rather than English, and families living in the Mount Vernon school district probably aren't as wealthy as families living in the McLean and Langley districts.)

#1 - Only true if you're talking about Jay Matthews' silly "Challenge Index" that measures how many subsidized AP/IB exams students have taken in the past at taxpayers' expense. By most measures, Mount Vernon is a below average high school.

#2 - True, but MV has far more of an issue with gangs and violence than most FCPS high schools. Check the FCPS statistics on school incidents.

#3 - That's a truism, but who you hang out with depends on who else is attending the school.

At virtually any other FCPS high school, Ms. King's advertisement would have been a scandal that led to her prompt dismissal or transfer. The fact that she's allowed to stay at Mount Vernon speaks volumes.

I guess so few of the kids at MVHS can actually read it didn't make much difference!

End this subsidizing of AP/IB! I want more money for self-esteem education.

Thing is, OP probably won't be able to convince his parents to move unless they are tired of the crime, etc., in their neighborhood. If so, then yeah, OP should be asking his parents to live in the Marshall or Woodson zones (places that are affordable yet seem to do well on tests, etc., and have fewer discipline problems on average.)
