Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Where I come from in PA, you can go to a local pound and get a dog for like $50.00 Are there any places like that around here? Everywhere I've looked they're like $250. I'd really like to rescue one or get an older one. Any suggestions? Thanks!
The Fairfax County Humane Society, or the Animal Shelter.

"And if any women or children get their legs torn off, or faces caved in, well, it's tough shit for them." -2LT. Bert Stiles, 505th, 339th (On Berlin Bombardier Mission, 1944).
I wanted a Beagle to hunt rabbits with and found they have plenty
of them at the shelter in Staunton. If you want a good hound, go south.
The one in Middleburg gets some fine dogs too.
Try petfinders.com. Most of the rescue groups post there. Each rescue group has different fees, so some are more expensive than others (follow the links to the actual rescue group's site to find specifics). Keep in mind that most of the rescue groups will pay the cost of spaying/neutering the animal, and pay for their vaccinations, so that is why some of them are so expensive. You are also contributing to the overall feeding and veterinary care of rescued animals by the rescue group. So while $250 may seem like a lot, it will probably cost you that much for initial veterinary care for an animal that didn't come from a rescue group.
you can have my dog. He is a 178 pound pressa canario. He's is perfect if you live by yourself and dont have people over. The tricky little bastard never barks or growls, he just lunges when someone walks into the house. He can put a entire soccer ball in his mouth and pop it the first bite and likes to hang on a tire 6 feet off the ground in the back yard for fun. The longest he has latched on to the tire is 45min.

Too unpredictable around people. The dog will not let ANYONE get in between me and him.
Costco they come with unlimited soda for under buck fifty. It is a pretty good meal. Just get a hot dog, not an animal that will keep your neighbors awake. Unless you get it from the shelter and that helps not put them to sleep.

Be aware that Fairfax County Animal shelter or whatever it is called will only provide you with an animal if you are a homeowner. They check the county property records. Actually, it is quite a reasonable policy since I am sure animals have made their way back their when a renter has to move and the new place does not allow pets.

Yeah, they want to check out your property too and make sure your fence is good enough.
Avoid the rescue leagues if at all possible. Their contracts give them the right to take back the dog for reasons you might not consider. For example, if you ever leave your dog in the back yard when you take a trip to the store, it is a contract violation. If your dog escapes it is returned to the rescue league, not you. If you move, you have to notify them.
Rescue leagues are not required to tell you the history of the dogs. It is not unusual for the dogs to have hidden illnesses that don't show up until later such as lime disease.
It is worth your time to visit animal shelters yourself, particularly those in rural counties where there is little paperwork and often no cost to adopt.
But if you are considering a rescue league, at the first (there will be multiple) interview, make sure you get a copy of the contract. And make sure you vacuum upstairs before the home inspections.
Check the classified ads in newspapers (and on Craigslist) for places that are in rural VA. I got my current dog (a golden retriever) from Stanley, VA for only $200. A golden around Fairfax cost more like $600-900.
Rescue organizations will usually waive the adoption fee for older dogs. Many people don't realize that these older dogs make great pets. They don't need as much exercise and are usually calm and well-trained.
All of the above answers are wrong. The thread title tells me all I need to know. If you are looking to take a dog in and you are looking to do it on the cheap you should NOT be a dog owner. You are the reason why our society needs shelters. What are you going to to when your "cheap" dog needs medical appointments or surgery? That stuff is in the thousands, not "cheap." Don't be an irresponsible dog owner... if you don't have money to properly care for it then don't get one.
