They do it just to piss you off. It's what they live for.

55 mph is for all of the lanes. Its dumb dickheads who speed that crash and cause all of the backups around here.

A Troll is absolutely right. Only a small percentage of left lane blockers (maybe 20%) are truly clueless. The rest of them are doing it intentionally -- these are very angry people, and passive-aggressive nonsense on the roads is how they take their anger out on strangers.

So the worst thing you can do is show them you're angry. The best thing you can do is pass them on the right (your success at doing so is their failure), and maybe even give them a big smile and a thumbs up in the process.

We took a couple of trips north this summer and ran into this on 70, 78, and 88. Wasn't too surprised to see it was a VA driver doing the same stupid act in PA, MD and NY.

and it sounds like piggy is one of these righteous assholes.

I think they must be the same drivers who go 5 mph below the limit but then run the stops signs?? It's a mysterious illness.

It's not just N.VA. It's every road. I drove to and from Florida and there was always some jackass in the left lane holding everyone up. Either a truck that tried to pass but couldn't, some ignoramus on his/her phone, or just some oblivious dipshit. The 2 things that piss me off the most are the tractor trailers that continue to stay in the left lane when the right lane is available to them to move into, yet they just plug along, or the driver that won't speed up, get ahead and move over. They just run the interstate 2 or 3 wide for 4 miles. Bullshit.

And yes if I'm in the left lane, I am always looking in my mirror for someone coming up faster than me, so I can move over.

First, at several points you either enter or exit those roads from the left. With traffic courtesy at low levels around here drivers will move over to the left lane at the earliest moment so that don't get cut off.

Second, in some 'areas where road construction is going on the right lane gets incredibly narrow and there is still a sholder on the left side, so some drivers feel less crowded there.

I haven't witnessed this problem as much on I-81. On that road trucks rule and you either get out of the way or get squashed.

+1. If I'm doing 65-70 in the left lane, you're riding my ass and flashing your lights, and I can't get over, fuck you. The people who want to do 90 in the left lane are generally the same assholes who:

- Bob and weave in and out of rush hour traffic to gain two car lengths
- Make swerving lane changes without using turn signals
- Tailgate you at high speeds
- Think traffic is supposed to merge around them

If everybody just stuck close to the speed limit and drove with even a small amount of respect for other drivers, everyone would get where they're going quicker.

If I slam on the brakes to avoid some self-absorbed prick, everyone behind me has to slam on their brakes. There's a good chance someone will rear-end someone else if the line is long enough, bringing the lane to a halt. Impatient assholes will jump to adjacent lanes, causing traffic around the lane to slow down. Now there's a traffic jam, and it's all because of you, asshole.

Dude - I had so many tailgaters on 95, it was insane. I'm doing 85 in a 70 - passing cars on my right (trying to get over) and there's some asshole literally 5' behind me trying to do 100 - I couldn't even see their headlights they were so close. I can't even tell you how many times that happened. If I had to slam on my brakes, they're in my trunk or worse. Fuck those people.

agreed that tailgating (especially at highway speeds) is FAR more dangerous than blocking the passing lane. passing on the right is dangerous as well.

It's still polite and safer to move over when you're not passing.

Europe was the best experience I've had in regard to high speed driving and slowpokes getting out of the way.

In some states it's illegal to be in the passing lane, unless you're passing.

If I had a Dime for every single time that's happened to me, especially around NoVa, I'd be a very rich man right now. I used to mess with those people too, and I would tap my brakes, slow down, and just piss them off even more. Nowadays I just laugh at them, and maintain whatever speed it was that I was originally traveling before they decided to bumper rape me.

Warhawk and ThePackLeader, it's the extreme moments like that where I realize how dirty my windshield seems to be, and how it would be prudent of me to blast the washing fluid every ten seconds or until I feel satisfied that the tailer gets the message my windshield is clean.

I generally stay to the right, but on 7100 it is hard to do because there are lots of lights and you you have to make left turns sometimes. Since it is not a freeway it does not piss me off as much as the other roads.

However, on Saturday I was stuck behind one turkey doing 45 mph in the northbound left lane of 7100 at Hooes Rd, who finally took a left on the Dulles Toll Road.

Jeezus Chris, it seems this has become more popular lately.

This morning, there was a small bus from Chesterbrook Academy, (daycare/preschool) going about 5 under the speed limit in the left lane.

And the middle and right were flowing freely...I don't get it.

not true! on i95 in new jersey, the left lane is either vacant or the people actually change lane when they see someone behind them! there are huge signs that read "left lane is for passing only. it's the law." or something similar. so, i have found there is at least one good thing in new jersey.

Texas and Tennessee also have those "Left lane for passing only" signs. I have heard Maryland state troopers cite people for going under the speed limit in the left lane.

In Virginia, it is an infraction to not move over for an overtaking vehicle, but if that overtaking vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, they forfeit the right of way.

How bout on the GW Parkway you drive in the right and pass in the left, help prevent head ons where there is no median.

And on 495, traffic would be much better if merging cars would speed up to merge and then slow down once they have merged so that they dont cause massive backups because of them. and highway traffic should leave the right lane open for mergers.

People suck at driving around here, probably more dangerous to be overly cautious.

You pretty much have to do that anyway heading southbound, as all the Marylanders coming from 495 are too stupid to move out of the left lane after the 123 on-ramp.

I hate when drivers;

-unintentionally block a turning lane. All they would have to do is move up a few more feet and a dozen people could squeeze by and make the next light.

-don’t pay attention at a stop light, notice last second, speed through the yellow and screw over everyone behind them.

-when SUVs jump into a turn lane full speed, when there is a stopped vehicle in front of them going straight. (This would be the only acceptable reason for you to block a turning lane, if it would keep you from getting rear-ended.)

-when someone is tailgating the shit out of you and you think they are in a hurry, only to realize they have just been on the cell phone the entire time and are riding your ass just because they are oblivious.

This is normal for all highways in most states all the way up Route 95 -- anywhere that has a major city with 200 miles. (Probably all the way down to Florida, too, I would guess. But I haven't lived or even driven much in that direction...)

Traffic is not 100% dicks all the time everywhere, but I've been up and down I95 a zillion times and there are plenty of bad drivers there, too.
