Day laborers in your home
Posted by: fairfax88 ()
Date: August 12, 2010 12:21AM

I am new to the home repair thing, so this may be a stupid question, but do you know when you hire to someone to work in your home they will not be picking up day laborers to come into your house? For example, if I were to hire someone to change the carpets or build a deck. I don't mind paying more to not have day laborers in my house. Is there any reliable data about the crime rate of day laborers attacking or robbing people in the homes they work on?

ask your neighbors who they use as a handy man... That is the best way. Me, my neighbors and friends have been using the same guy for years. He is also a white guy and If the job it too big for him he knows alot of people. Just ask around

It is common knowledge that illegal immigrants (especially ones from impoverished Mexico) routinely case houses while performing home improvement tasks to come back and steal TVs and jewelry.

They just might come back and steal your ass too.

I would be more worried about a contractor using day labors and they or thier friends rob my house a few months later. I never stray away from the guy I currently use although he is a bit slow.

A guy putting siding on my house used a couple, I went after them and pulled on the siding and it fell to the ground, Several rows put up and they never nailed into a stud, But as has been said, they do the jobs americans dont want to do, they do it but they do a really shitty job

Uh yeah! Most Americans would NOT improperly install siding
on their fellow American's home, if for no other reason just
for prides sake. So your right, they DO the jobs we REFUSE to do;
HALF ASSED, I DON'T GIVE A FUCK SLOP JOBS.

No-hablo Pablos (as we call them) are a crucial part of our local economy. The vast majorty of these people are humble, hardworking and often highly skilled.
If you live in a cookie cutter home that was built by Ryan, Ryland, Richmond american, Khov, WSI,Beazer, Pulte-Dell webb or any similar builder a substantial portion of your home was built by Pablo's.
Contractors do not always have to pick these guys up somewhere, they show up on jobsites because they despreately WANT to work. Tradesmen who get paid by peicework are very willing to slip these guys cash for their labor.
Some Pablos also use a friends carde verde (green card) to gain employment. When using a friends ID they elect to have the maximum ammount of tax money witheld so that the friend dosent have a huge tax bill at the end of the year. The legal ID holder simply cashes their check at one of the hispanic convnience stores and hands the Pablo his cash.
If the residential construction industry had to reley on American labor it would be screwed. Every now and then I hire a middle class american kid for a laborer position, he will call out sick twice in the first two weeks and come in late every other day. Most of the time when I mention that we need a drug test before we can hire them they never show for the interview.

Probably the vast majority of the street corner walkers are leftovers that the contractors don't want. If the contractor has been in business for any length of time, they know who to call if they need someone.

If you let Mexicans in your house, they will come back later with a pickup truck and some floor jacks and steal your entire house. They lift it up, put it on a flatbed, and drive away with it, easy as you please. They will be listening to that polka music and sitting 12 deep in the front seat while they do it, talking in that crazy gobbledygook language of theirs.

That's what I was thinking, too ... either that or they just arrived and don't have a steady gig lined up yet.

For what it's worth, crime declined greatly between 1980 and 2000, then went up some what since then ... let's just say the day laborers have a long, long way to go to catch up to the full potential of native criminals.

You can blame many factors. The customer wants to pay the least amount they can and still get a decent job done. Nothing wrong with that at all. The contractor wants to get the job and still make a decent profit for his business. Nothing wrong with that either. The illegal day-laborer is willing to do the job for less money and fewer benefits and probably willing to put up with more shit than an American-born worker because, well, we're pretty spoiled, most of us. When you think about it, other than the day-laborer being there and having little choice in the kind of work he gets, none of this is his fault either.

The fact is if you took them out of the equation, prices for all construction and remodeling work would go up. Meaning fewer people would pay someone to have it done, meaning less business for an already struggling industry. Some of the money not going to hardware stores and the like would be counter-balanced by do-it-yourselfers, but some things many people simply can't do themselves due to lack of skills or lack of time to dedicate to the task, if they want it done in a timely fashion.

So, where does that leave us? What's the solution? I don't know.

-YES THERE IS, it is called BEING CONCERNED WITH YOUR IMMEDIATE OUTCOME and
being a PISS-POOR AMERICAN by NOT GIVING A FUCK ABOUT AMERICA.

and:
> "The contractor wants to get the job and still make a decent profit for his business. Nothing wrong with that either."

-YES THERE IS; what is wrong is if the contractor does NOT CARE about the repercussions of his ILL-BUISINESS practices on AMERICA, then he deserves an extended stay in a correctional facility like the rest of the criminals who defraud the Amercian taxpayer.

and:
>"When you think about it, other than the day-laborer being there and having little choice in the kind of work he gets, none of this is his fault either."

-SORRY, BUT I MUST BLAME THE INVADER. Those who have adapted their buisiness practices to take advantage of this circumstance, are not even as guilty as the problem itself. @ least the buisiness man belonged here in the first place.

and:
>"The fact is if you took them out of the equation, prices for all construction and remodeling work would go up. Meaning fewer people would pay someone to have it done, meaning less business for an already struggling industry."

-GOODY! This just means lower prices @ Home Depot, and people will be forced to get off their lazy asses and mow their own lawns.

expect to pay a paranoid bigot tax of 30-50%.

I happened to find a guy from Lithuania, not on a street corner though, who is an excellent carpenter. His English is nearly nonexistant so he brings his sons along to translate. The guy was/is a terrific carpenter and works hard. I paid him a fair price, not the cheapest though and he's here legally! So, it's possible to find immigrants that do good work, are legal, and are very reasonable.

He went back to Lithuania for the summer but I can't wait for him to get back because I want him to redo the kitchen.

It's funny how you few complaints were heard 5 or 6 years ago when the building boom was still on and these day laborers were in high demand. Now that the construction industry is slow many folks want to see the hispanics deported. Disposable people.

So what?

Those 'disposable' people think you have a disposable SS # also.
These dispoasable people also think we have disposable time for the problems they cause us and expect the American tax payer to come up with disposable income to feed, school, and house their illegal families. They also seem to think we have disposable children when they want to get drunk and drive their illegal cars on our roads.

So fuck YOU anon user 'homeowner54', and fuck your 'disposable' criminals too.

In long-term, immigrants are good for U.S. legal or not.

By Alfonso Chardy | Miami Herald
Immigrant workers reduce job opportunities for native-born workers in the short run, but improve the economy after several years, thus making it easier for everybody to be hired, according to a study released Monday.

``Immigration may slightly reduce native employment and average income at first,'' according to the 26-page report The Impact of Immigrants in Recession and Economic Expansion. ``In the long run, immigrants do not reduce native employment rates, but they do increase productivity and hence average income.''

The report, issued by the Washington-based Migration Policy Institute, based its conclusions on an analysis of U.S. Census data from 1960 to 2008. To assess long-term effects, the report's author looked at 48 years of state population and employment data. For the short term, they analyzed population surveys since 1994.

The report is one of the latest efforts by groups favoring immigration reform to show that foreign nationals in the U.S. work force help advance national interests.

As the debate over legalization of undocumented immigrants heats up in the aftermath of Arizona's high-profile immigration control law, one of the pivotal points centers on whether foreign workers help or harm U.S.-born workers.

Anybody who thinks illegals are great should try living in a neighborhood with them.My property line smell like a urinal. All my neighbor have had stuff stolen from them. You have to keep your door lock all hours of the day and night. Your kids can't play safely in your yard for fear of drunken brawls at 12 noon or worse. These are all huge benefits to society.
