Nitrogen in tires
Posted by: iceman ()
Date: August 05, 2010 07:50AM

Heard that a lot of folks these days are filling Nitrogen in their tires. Any ideas on whats the difference between regular air and filling Nitrogen.

I have seen any Nitrogen filling stations except for COSTCO around here. Any other around here?

It's to force you to go back to the stealership.

Most tire shops now use nitrogen fills and there are supposedly two advantages:

1) Nitrogen molecules are larger than the mixed air molecules which means that you should have less likelihood of losing tire pressure due to microscopic air leaks.

2) Nitrogen is 'dry' which is a benefit to tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) found on nearly every car built since around 2005 or 2006. Regular air has some degree of moisture which can corrode or otherwise damage the TPMS units.

I don't know what happens when you start with a nitrogen fill and top of your tires with regular air. This is a topic that Pat Goss has discussed on Motor Week and on his radio show.

Since it does not cost anything additional, I don't know that there is a downside to nitrogen.

My neighbor's been filling his tires with freon. It helps maintain tread balance and will stay cooler while you're driving on hot days like this. It's cheap, too.

I have never used nitrogen and got close to 70k miles on my Yokohamas.

It's just a bullshit service, kinda like those engine flushes that are being advertised all over the place.

Blessed are the murderous.

The benefit claims may be spurious, but the two repair shops I use both use nitrogen exclusively and the cost to mount a tire has not changed in several years, so I don't see an issue. However, if given a choice and it was an extra $5+ for nitrogen I would stick with regular air.

nitrogen is used in race car tires because the pressure is more stable and the drivers are trying to shave a few hundredths of a second off lap times. if you're just going to work and getting groceries it's probably not necessary.

I can't imagine that gas station air is really nitrogen. That would seem like an expense that they would not want to give up for free...

I fill mine with laughing gas. Somebody slashed my tires once, and I found him in a ditch a few feet away, looking pretty happy. That stopped when I kicked his teeth in, though.

Nitrogen dose not expand and contract like regular air, thus keeping you tire at the same pressure. Look in your owners manual, it always says to check your tire pressure when the tire is cold. Nitrogen only helps if you drive long distances at highway speed, so if you drive to DC every day, run the free air from the mobil station.

With Michelin MXV4 tires I never had to add nitrogen for the full 60,000 mile life of the tires. I read a Consumer Reports test that had a wide range of results using nitrogen so I believe the quality of the tires makes a big difference on how often you need to adjust the tire pressure with air or nitrogen.

I also thought I'd see more places offering nitrogen but I'm not sure why only a few places offer it.

Nitrogen maintains the same pressure regardless of temperature. It also has no moisture.

Normal air from a compressor will have moisture , and expands and contracts as the temps change.

Ergo, with air, you're tire pressure changes with temps.

Nitrogen is a constant.

I think you need to retake your classes that make you consider yourself a chemist, because you didn't learn a damn thing.

nitrogen and oxygen are very similar. making it no surprise that they are right next to each other on the periodic table. air is 4 parts nitrogen, 1 part oxygen and a sliver of other things.

the benefits of using 100% nitrogen instead of air (80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen) are negligible at best and overpriced at worst. unless it's free, dont get it.

lol wtf. Nitrogen in tires. Get a tire pressure gauge and keep your tires properly inflated.

correct.

in addition to the air inside increases in density, so does your tire. basically, your tire gets smaller as it gets cold. if the gas did not increase it's density, you would get a rise in air pressure.

purchasing 100% nitrogen for your tires is like buying snake oil.

I hear snake oil extends engine life. Better even than synthetic oil.

Hey now, synthetic oil really does work, and it lasts a hell of a lot longer than conventional oil.

With my favorite oil additive, I can use ANY KIND or brand of motor oil.

And with the amount of money you will spend on just one (1) cort of synthetic, you'll actually be saving ALOT of money.

But my favorite brand of motor oil is Castrol GTX.

LOL! Literally.

Everything, EVERYTHING, expands and contracts with changes in temperature. That includes liquids and solids.
