FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Authorities are warning Fairfax County residents to watch out for homemade chemical bombs placed in mailboxes and on front lawns.
The Fairfax County Fire Department says at least eight of the bombs have been found in Reston and West Springfield since May. The bombs are made of over-the-counter chemicals, such as Drano and baking soda. No one has been injured.
Police and fire officials are investigating.
Lee-Alison Sibley says she found a plastic water bottle in her mailbox in Great Falls in June. The bottle had already exploded, but she suffered a chemical burn on her finger.
lol. What idiots. Those will only explode if you shake them up and keep them in a pressurized container. If you use a glass container, yeah, you can get some extremely dangerous shrapnel. If you use plastic, you'll get much, much, less.
You'd have to be pretty stupid to find a bottle of something on your lawn, walk over, pick it up, and shake it up.
A friend back in high school did this once. Evidently it makes a loud ass explosion. Unfortunately, he used a glass jar and shook it too many times. He ended up in Fairfax Hospital when a big ass piece of glass cut open his stomach.
I don't know who he/she is, but I do know that they're a phukking idiot. The moment they started blowing up mailboxes, they attracted the attention of the Feds.

Screwing around with mailboxes makes it an automatic felony because you are messing around with the US mail.
As for doing no damage, the one person reported chemical burns. You don't have to shake up the mix, just let the water combine with the chemicals to get an explosion.
