Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Nice - small, and friendly. We bought some wine at the snowed in Wine Expo back in February and it was fairly good - their Cab Franc was MUCH better that some of the others we tried there. If you do get some, make sure it's stored well and on it's side. We lost a few bottles from VA wine makers to the corks drying out and had cooking vinegar instead.
Something I've noticed about VA wines in general: VA makes good sweet wine, but not very good dry wines. Some of the fantastic ones we've had are the Noche (desert wine), Sweet Louisa, and a Toms Brook Red. I forget who makes them, but I'm to lazy to go look in the basement. Anything that's supposed to be dry just isn't as tasty.
Wegmans actually has a great wine selection. A lot of the VA makers sell wine there including the ones I mentioned above. It's much cheaper than at the wine shows and events around here. My boyfriend and I have become wine assholes lately and go around sipping and oppinionating about them. Fun.
been there a couple times for good wine and a beautiful location. their friday night happy hours are nice. very relaxed, good sangria, bring your own picnic, live music. check it out, it's pretty cool.
Paradise Springs has some pretty nice wines. They're a brand new place so they're still buying in a lot of fruit, but they're up front about where it's sourced and the winemaker has a nice touch.
As for the commenter who remarks on bad dry wines in VA- dude. North Mountain is an ok but middle of the road winery, and Cooper (who does the Noche and Sweet Louisa) actually does a really nice Viognier and a downright stellar Norton. They've really kicked the quality up a notch in the last 18 months, so if you haven't been there in that time, go again- you'll be impressed.
As for actual NoVA wineries, Delaplane Cellars is great, and all of us who love local wine worship at the altar of Linden Vineyards.
